Chapter 5: Safe or Not?
Precap: Saket got a call from Shashank and whatever he heard, shocked him to core
"What happened? Are the children fine? Say something," Swati demanded.
"Saketji, please tell us." Akshara too tried persuading the silent man.
"Shashank and Apurva met an accident," Saket shared the news void any emotion. His face was blank, eyes showing no feelings at all, like they were dead.
All gasped in shock. Tears were flowing from everyone's eyes. Little Siddharth and Abhishek, who were not understanding anything, were just glancing at them in confusion.
"Dadu, aught is akshident?" Abhishek asked in his small voice, stumbling on pronunciation as they were yet to learn new and hard words.
Saket kneeled down before Abhishek, before breaking down the news to them in a way they will understand, "Baccha, mumma papa got injured. Abhi bete, you got bau (hurt) on your hand, right?" He waited for Abhishek to answer before continuing, "Same way your mumma papa also got bau."
"They must be clying (crying) na due to bau (hurt)? Abhu too clied when he had bau," Siddharth shared, remembering the incident and relating it with this one.
"Siddharth, stop asking stupid questions. We need to go to the hospital right now!" Aditya, who was already running thin on his patience due to his worry for his daughter's safety, lashed out on the toddler.
Both, Siddharth and Abhishek flinched due to the shouting. Sid started crying while Abhi, who himself was fighting with his own tears, hugged him, patting Sid's back.
"Aho, why are you shouting at him? We should reach the hospital in no time," Akshara tried to calm her husband.
"Aksharaji is right."
Saket and Aditya agreed with their wives. Swati and Akshara consoled the toddlers before leaving for the hospital. There, the doctor was already waiting for them only.
"How are the children? Are they fine? Can we meet them? Where are they? Tell us, doctor," the elders demanded.
"Calm down, calm down. I know you are worried for them but let me speak. Mr. and Mrs. Nigam, Mr. and Mrs. Patil, I'm really sorry. We tried our best but the injuries were deep. It was a car accident.
"Mr. Shashank's car got in an accident near the jungle road. It blasted. Some civilians saw Mr. Shashank in a very bad state, unconscious a few meters away from the car. They took his phone and called for an ambulance as well as you all.
"Late treatment and major blood loss were one of the causes of Mr. Nigam's survival chances to be low. Still we tried our best to save him. But, we failed. We're sorry for your demise. Especially these kids' demise," the doctor broke down the news to the family.
Saket and Swati were shocked to death. They couldn't believe that their kid, their Shashank, their blood was no more. Aditya and Akshara too felt sorry for Shashank but their ears wanted to hear about Appu. They were confused why the doctor did not mention anything about Apurva.
Was she safe or she too.... Was the only question coming in their minds. Finally gathering some courage and making their minds ready to face the worst, they asked the doctor. The doctor looked thoroughly confused at the question.
"Weren't Mr. Shashank alone?" the doctor enquired.
"No doctor, Shashank and Apurva were together only," Aditya told him.
"I see. In that case, maybe Mr. Shashank would have been thrown out of the car at time of accident but Mrs. Apurva would have been in the car only. And Mr. Shashank would have gone a bit away from the car to ask for help but due to weakness and injuries got unconscious.
"In that case, I'm sorry to say but, Mrs. Apurva would have been burned with the car blast. We didn't have the slightest idea of someone being in the car. So poor of these kids, they lost their both parents on the very same day and became an orphan. But thankfully they have someone who could look after them," the doctor expressed his pity.
All were shocked as hell. No one was ready to believe that they lost both, Shashank and Apurva on the very same day. Tears were flowing down their eyes, with no efforts taken to stop. Siddharth and Abhishek, though young and not understanding a single word, were also crying as they could sense something bad had happened. They looked at the doctor with pure innocence in their eyes, with confusion tinged in them.
"Wheal (Where) ij mumma papa? I want them," both kids cried out.
"Babies, they are no more. They will not come and meet you. They are with God now. They became a star. Now you have to live without them with your grandparents," he turned towards the elders, his voice turning serious, totally opposite from his previous gentle tone. "Last rituals of Mr. Shashank should be done. So we will hand you the body, if you please."
"Can we see him, Doctor? Please! Please let me see him," Saket begged.
"Fine but from a distance."
All nodded and the doctor took them towards the room, where Shashank took his last breath. Abhi was feeling suffocated, but he ignored that feeling. He and Sid followed their grandparents. Before entering the room, the doctor told them to put on a mask.
The smell of the dead body reached their nose, causing their breath to hitch. That smell made Abhi more suffocated. He was facing difficulties in breathing but ignoring that all, he went near his father.
The doctor removed the cloth from Shashank's face and that was the last straw for Abhi. That was too much for the little boy to see, to bear. By watching his father's bleeding face with lots of cuts, his head started spinning.
"Papa...." And he collapsed down on the floor, shouting for his father.
Everybody panicked, scaring Sid more. The poor boy just saw his dead father in a very bad condition and now his twin too fainted. He was crying vigorously hugging Abhi and patting his cheeks, desperately trying to wake him up.
The doctor quickly carried Abhi in his arms and took him out, in another room. He checked and injected him. He turned to have a word with others who looked tense.
"It was an Asthma Attack. He got too scared when he saw Mr. Shashank and also the surrounding was suffocating him. Don't worry, I have sedated him and he will gain consciousness in a few hours. You please console the other little."
He turned towards Siddharth, trying to cheer the sobbing kid, "Hey, champ, nothing has happened to your twin. See, after 2 hours he will be playing with you. Don't cry or he too will start crying after waking up. Wipe your tears. Do you want him to cry and be sick? No right, then wipe it."
Sid shook his head in no and quickly wiped his tears. He hugged Saket and in no time, sleep took over him.
That's it for today
