(12) Keep it Together
Julie's POV
I just got out of the shower and got the group text that we're going out. Good thing Mama gave me my phone back after breakfast this morning or I wouldn't have known until after I already had gotten dressed. Neither Mama or Mom have replied yet which is weird because normally Mama is always first with anything regarding the team. I know I can go to dinner, well more like have to go to dinner, because it's probably team bonding so it would be against the rules if I skipped and there's no way Mama would let me, but I don't know if they're going to let me go drink afterwards. Do you know how bad it would look if Carli Lloyd's little girl decided she didn't need to come to team events? Yeah and she knows too, believe me. Last time I asked to stay in instead of going bowling with everyone she laughed and grounded me for a week. I was sick! I was literally throwing up when I asked! Mom didn't know I was sick because she was rehabbing her shoulder so when she saw me at the alley and I was burning up with fever and puking in the trash can in the corner she just about killed Mama. If Hope Solo's little girl didn't show up for team stuff nobody would bat an eye. Mom's scary and people don't question her. She hates team bonding anyway so it wouldn't be strange if I did too. I don't, it's actually really fun, but it would be fine if I didn't. I better hurry up and get down to their room before Mama comes to get me for timeout. She's already threatened me with something more than that today and I really don't want one. From what Moe's told me they aren't good. I don't think Mom would let her, but then again Mom is the one who washed my mouth out for using the s word after I got hit with a ball. It wasn't like I was just talking and I used it, or that I was being negative toward someone, it just hurt really bad!
"JB? Princess are you in there?" calls Mom softly knocking on my door. "Open the door please baby."
"Hey Mommy." I say with a soft smile while opening it. "Can I go out after dinner tonight?"
"Baby I don't-"
"Please Mommy! Oh please!" I beg giving her a kiss on her cheek. "I'll be good I promise!"
"Maybe baby girl, but you have to ask Mama too, alright?" she reasons smoothing out my wet hair. "Go ahead and get ready for supper before coming to our room, okay? I don't know how long your Mama is planning on keeping you in timeout." she says still playing with my hair. "Princess are you sure you don't need help with this? I can comb it out for you, or blow dry it-"
"Mom." I sigh shaking my head. "I can do it. I'm a big kid, remember?"
"Of course I know that." she says with a sad smile. I look at her confused.
"What's wrong?" I ask concerned. She shrugs it off and kisses my forehead.
"Nothing baby." she says with a sniffle. "I've got to go get dressed." She reaches up to wipe her eyes before turning and rushing back down the hall. That was weird. Mom never gets emotional like that. As I go to walk back into the bathroom I trip over one of Moe's shoe.
"Morgan!" I groan.
Hope's POV
I quickly wipe away my tears as I run into Carli's and I's room. My little bug is growing up. She won't even let me do her hair! I know she's never truly been little since I've known her, but she's always been my tiny center back. "Hoppers? Are you crying?"
"Huh?" I ask rubbing my face and looking up. I see Carli glancing at me from the bathroom sink.
"Your face is red and you're sniffling." she explains putting on mascara. "Is something up with your shoulder? You're not hurt are you?"
"Oh no." I shake my head. "No. It's nothing like that."
"Then what is it?" she questions digging around in her makeup bag.
"Julie." I say sitting down on the bed. I lay back and sigh. At least she still called me "Mommy" today.
"Huh? Where is she anyways? Surely she's out of the shower by now. Well then again it is JJ we're talking about and that girl could use the whole ocean-" she stops talking as she walks into the room. "Hope what happened? Is Julie alright?" I groan and sit up putting my elbows on my knees and my head in my hands.
"My baby's getting too big." I say sadly. I feel tears well up in my eyes and quickly try to blink them away. "She wouldn't let me comb her hair."
"Oh." I feel the bed sink down next to me and her hand on my back. "She's just being more independent that's all. That's a good thing not a bad one. She's twenty-three, twenty-four in a few months, it's time for her to start doing her own hair don't you think?"
"I guess," I sigh sitting up, "but she hates to comb it out because of all the tangles she has; it hurts so she never does it. That's why I always do it." Carli stays quiet for a minute thinking about what I said. She knows it's true. JJ is the most tender headed person in the world and Car knows first hand just how bad she is. Most of the time when Car has to do it I have to step in and finish because Jules cries and cries and throws a fit and it gets to the point where if I don't Carli and her would probably have to fight it out.
"She's always going to be your baby girl Hope." she says patting my back and standing up. "C'mon get ready."
"Alright." I nod and wipe my face again. "But you're wrong."
"What do you mean I'm wrong?"
"She'll always be our baby girl." I say smiling at her. She smirks at me and chuckles.
"My apologies." she says putting her hands up in surrender. "Of course she's mine to, but you were the one upset so I said yours." I continue to smile at her as I go to pick out my dress for tonight. So either purple or red. The red makes me look hot, but I'm married and Jerramy's not here so I don't have anyone to impress. The purple is more casual and a lot more comfortable so I'll go with it. "Do you know where we're going?"
"Um," I pause as I pull the dress over my head, "if Christie picked it's probably Italian. Can you zip me?"
"Uh yeah. Come here." she says putting in one of her earrings. I back up to her and jump at the touch of her cold hands. "Sorry." she mumbles. "Hope." she grunts tugging on the zipper. "I love you but you may have grown some since you bought this."
"It fit last week." I whine trying to suck in. "C'mon Car pull harder!"
"Aitch it's not-" she huffs before yanking it up," Never mind. Just don't breathe too heavy and eat salad."
"Thanks." I say sighing in relief. "Now I just got to put on some makeup and curl- no I'm just going to leave it natural." I say referring to my hair.
"It looks good today." she says nodding in approval. "We're not going to let Julie go to the bar tonight, right?"
"Why not?"
"She's misbehaved all day Hope." she says turning from closet where her dress is hung up. "I don't think she deserves to."
"She did not!" I argue. Yeah she got a little sassy, but she most certainly was not disobedient to the point that she needs to stay home. That's ridiculous.
"She's been bad all day! Ever since we got on the bus this morning! She back talked me, kept running around, almost lost her socks, God knows what her and Moe did to Ashlyn, she-"
"Alright, alright!" I shout cutting her off. "I still think we should still let her though. Everyone else is going to be out and she's going to be here all alone. That's just not fair Carli."
"She was-" Knock Knock! Carli stops to answer the door. "Where have you been?" I hear her ask putting her hands on her hips. "You were supposed to come down here as soon as you got out of the shower."
"Mom told me to get ready first." I bite my lip as Carli turns angrily to glare at me. Julie slips in the door behind her and quickly mouths me an apology. "Mama-"
"Go to the corner Julie Beth." seethes Car pointing to the wall but continuing to glare at me. It doesn't take a second for JJ to have her nose pressed firmly against the corner and have her toes touching the baseboards. I quickly head into the bathroom to try to escape the tension between Carli and I. "I can't believe you." she says lowly so Jay can't hear while following me.
"Car I-"
"No Hope! You told her she could deliberately disobey me! You can't do that!" she says raising her voice. Now it's my turn to glare. I quickly move around her and close the door. She's not about to cause a scene in front of our daughter.
"Why can't I?" I say harshly but quietly.
"Because you can't go behind my back and go against what I said." she says angrily. "We have to be on a united front with her. You know that!"
"Yeah I know that, but you were being-" I say walking back into the bedroom to get my necklace.
"Being what?" she snaps. "A disciplinarian? God knows one of us has to!"
"Jay," I say putting in one of my earrings, "go down to Ali and Ash's room please." I wait until I hear our door shut before looking back at Carli. "She's not a bad kid, C." I say putting on my lipstick.
"I didn't say that!" she yells throwing her shirt down on the bed. "Stop putting words in my mouth!"
"That's what you're insinuating!" I say back raising my voice. "Oh and don't you ever yell at me in front of my daughter again!"
"Your daughter?" she muses pulling on her dress. "Yours? What happened to her being ours?"
"You just lost that privilege!"
Ashlyn's POV
KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK! I roll my eyes as I continue to tie my tie in the mirror. We still have half an hour until we're supposed to be on that bus and I intend on taking that whole half hour. "JJ?" ask Ali sounding concerned. What's Julie doing here? I peak out of the bathroom and see Alex hugging her. "Hey Ash?" she calls not knowing I'm behind her.
"Hey JJ. What's the problem kiddo?" I question softly.
"Mom and Mama are fighting." she says into Ali's shoulder. "Mama keeps yelling so Mom told me to come here. Is that okay?"
"Yeah baby that's fine." assures Ali rubbing her back. "What are they fighting about sweetie?"
"M-me." she sniffles wiping her face.
"Hey hey hey." says Alex moving her hands and leading her over to where all her stuff is set up. "You're messing up your makeup. C'mere and let me fix it."
"What do you mean they're fighting about you?" I ask leaning on the desk. It's always something with those two.
"Mama's mad because Mom told me to get ready before coming to their room, but Mama told me to come straight there after I showered and-"
"Alright alright." soothes Alex cutting off her rambling. "You're fine now so just calm down for me and breathe babe." I watch as she gently cleans Julie's face up and efficiently calms her down. "Do you have all your stuff for tonight honey? Where's your phone? Purse?"
"It's in my room." she says blinking as Ali tries to redo her mascara. "But my I left my phone it there."
"I'll go get it." I say standing up and already heading to the door. I have some choice words for Carli Llyod and Mrs. Hope Solo. Okay probably not as many for Hope because she's Hope, but still. They've got to keep it together while in front of her. JJ and I may not have the best relationship, but that doesn't mean I don't look out for her.
