Dear friends,
As you may know, I wrote a speech the other day. My name is BloodyFire, my pronouns are they/them, and it's my turn to talk. My speech is about gender and, particularly, of being non binary. Yes, I could have chosen a more simple subject. For example : "Can we consider sweet potato french fries as french fries?". That's a really good question. But the answer was too simple: we can't. So, I decided to go with gender.
First, what does non binary actually mean ? In our society, gender is divided in two: men and women. They make the binary. Non-binary people are everyone that doesn't fit in these category. And that is a lot of people. In other terms, there are the people that only like apples, the people that only like pizzas, and the people that like something else. It's not really a category by itself, but it's here. Refusing to admit it would be like meeting a unicorn. If you still say that they don't exist after that, then you are the problem.
Now, I'm not just here to say that we exist. What wouldd be the point of that ? No, I'm here because we don't get respected. I'm here because we can't be ourselves in our society. I'm here because they don't let us exist. I chose a few examples just for you, and the first is our ids.
We all have our identity cards or passeports, and we all have this F or M next to our name. What would such a thing help someone to recognise us ? What's inside your pants is inside your pants, not on your face. It is possible to change this letter... If you want to spend months gathering prooves to convince a judge that you are yourself. I'm not even talking about the fact that there is no neutral. It's just a really complicated thing to handle.
You must think that ids aren't that important. Who cares about a single letter, afterall ? But it is. Did you know that in schools, for teachers to call you the right way, you needed agreement from both of your parents ? It's really practicall when lots of the kids only live with one of them.
To finish, I would like to talk about our wonderful language, French. Please, try to translate "I'm happy" without gendering yourself. It's not easy, is it ? It's not a reason to be sad. But it is quite a big problem. Feminists have introduced some neutral pronouns in French, which could be great. However, they mostly work for writing, and don't do anything for adjectives. Language is part of our everyday life, gender is part of our everyday life, perhaps we should care about it a little more
I want to thank you for your attention. It was a difficult subject for me to choose, but I'm glad I could talk about it.
