Everything Stays (Oneshot; 21)
"Shit, Michael. I think we spent all our money on food tickets."
Jeremy and Michael stood in front of a ride, examining the people around them. Everyone was paying in blue tickets and they had...
"Yellow..." Michael stared down at the tickets in his hand as if they had mortally offended him. "Shit, Jeremy. We totally spent all our money on food tickets."
The two boys mournfully turned away from the ride, making their way to the carnival's free entertainment tent. They sat down at a table, looking up at the stage that had been set up. Three people were playing live music, two men on acoustic, one woman on bass.
"Jeremy..." Michael whispered excitedly, loud enough to be heard over the speakers.
Jeremy turned to see him pulling the strap he had over his shoulder. "Oh my God."
"It'll be fuuuun!"
"You have got to be kidding me, Michael Mell."
"I most certainly am not, Jeremiah Heere."
Jeremy's grin betrayed him as he began to laugh. "You are ridiculously extra."
"But I'm still your favowite person," Michael reminded him, sounding as though he was posing a question.
"Yeah, whatever, sure," Jeremy responded, snorting.
Michael seemed satisfied, dragging Jeremy to the place next to the stage.
The trio had just finished their act, making way for another. The DJ that had been announcing the acts and playing music in between looked confused. Jeremy guessed that the next performers hadn't shown up yet. Michael was bubbling with excitement as he bounced up the stage to speak with the man.
Jeremy couldn't hear much over the thrum of the crowded tent, but Michael was nodding and smiling at the man who seemed to be explaining something.
When he bounded back down the steps, he beamed. "Let's kill it."
"This is dumb," Jeremy commented as he allowed himself to be dragged the rest of the way up the stage.
"So are most of the things we do! They're still fun." Michael was grinning widely as they got up the stage. He pulled off the strap he had slung over his shoulders and held his ukulele to his chest proudly.
"Wait, Michael, what are we playing?" Jeremy hissed, unsure of what was about to happen.
Michael simply winked at him as he began to strum the beginning of a very familiar song.
Jeremy shot Michael a mortified glance as if to say, Really? This? But Michael showed no signs of stopping, even extending the opening a bit smoothly, waiting for Jeremy to begin.
Jeremy sighed deeply before singing, "Let's go in the garden, you'll find something waiting, right there where you left it lying upside down."
Some people in the crowd quieted and showed signs of recognition. Jeremy continued, looking over at Michael nervously. "When you finally find it, you'll see how it's faded. The underside is lighter when you turn it around. Everything stays right where you left it. Everything stays, but it still changes. Ever so slightly, daily and nightly, in little ways when everything stays."
The crowd had hushed in awed silence as Michael finished the final note. Soon, small claps rang out until many people were clapping and smiling brightly.
Jeremy turned to Michael once more, unsure of what to do. Michael grinned again happily. You did it, he seemed to say. Jeremy returned the smile shyly, turning to wave at the crowd before they both dashed off the stage, hand-in-hand.
"I told you you had a good voice," Michael commented once they had found a bench outside the tent.
"Oh shut up, it was your ukulele playing that they liked," Jeremy retorted, taking a bite out of his ice cream sandwich.
"I refuse to believe that, though my skills are pretty top tier." Michael smiled proudly.
Jeremy snorted. "Whatever, dude."
"It was fun though, yeah?" Michael prodded.
"Yeah..." Jeremy answered. "I guess it was."
Jeremy looked down to see Michael's open hand next to his. Michael looked at him expectantly. He laughed quietly, taking his hand into his own and laying his head on Michael's shoulder.
They were quiet for a moment before Michael broke the silence with, "We've still got a million food tickets we don't need."
What? Basing a oneshot off an experience you had? That's unheard of.
Just kidding y'all, but I really did go to a carnival, and I kid you not, while I was there I had this idea and started writing.
Of course, I didn't finish it until a wEEK later but tHAT IS IRRELEVANT.
