| CHAPTER 4 |
~ Seoul, South Korea ~
Namjoon was engrossed in work, discussing a case with his secretary, Lee, when someone barged into his office.
Kim Ja-Kyung, his uncle and his father's older brother, stormed in. Known for being an undercover mob leader, Ja-Kyung's illegal activities were kept under wraps thanks to Namjoon's legal expertise. Though Namjoon had to protect him due to threats against his family, he ensured his name remained clear of any direct involvement in his uncle's shady dealings.
"I got a mail from your secretary saying you're fully booked until next month. What's this about?" Ja-Kyung snapped, clearly agitated.
"I was genuinely busy, which is why I had him send that mail," Namjoon replied, not bothering to look up from his paperwork.
"Even with your father under my radar," Ja-Kyung said as he took a seat across from Namjoon.
Namjoon slammed the file he was holding onto the desk and fixed a steely glare on his uncle.
"You can't even touch a hair on his head, Ja-Kyung," Namjoon said, glaring fiercely.
"Oh, my boy, I can," Ja-Kyung chuckled.
"Want to see?" Ja-Kyung asked, pulling out a live feed of Namjoon's father and Jieun shopping.
"What the hell do you want?!" Namjoon yelled, his frustration boiling over.
"Now we get to the main point," Ja-Kyung said, straightening up. "An old hag has filed a review petition to overturn the previous judgment in that case. I need you to handle it. That's all."
"Are you out of your mind? Threatening my family just to get me to defend your lousy case?!" Namjoon was livid.
"Either you take the case, or you can say goodbye to your father, my dear nephew," Ja-Kyung smirked, his eyes cold.
"I accept," Namjoon said, slumping into his chair with defeat. He wasn't weak, but facing a mob leader like Ja-Kyung made even the sanest person reluctant to defy him.
"Great choice, my nephew. You really do care about your family," Ja-Kyung said, rising from his seat.
"After two weeks, my case will have its first hearing. Be prepared, or you know the consequences," his uncle warned.
Only Namjoon knew this darker side of his uncle. Even his own father was unaware of the sinister side of his brother.
"I expect this case to succeed," Ja-Kyung added with a chilling tone, but Namjoon paid no heed to him and glared his desk with fury
~ Daegu, South Korea ~
It was evening, and you were working in your home office, which was conveniently located just ten steps from the living room. Despite being so close, you had settled on the couch in the living room to work.
"Mr. Min," a guard called out to your father.
"We have a visitor. He says he wants to have a meeting with Ms. Min," the guard informed, causing your father to frown.
"Y/N? At 7 p.m.?" Your father raised his eyebrows in surprise.
"Yes, sir. He mentioned it's very important," the guard replied nervously after facing your father. your father frowned and was about to order guard to send that man away but you interrupted
"Let him in," you said, setting your laptop aside. Your father gave you a puzzled look, but you only smiled lightly in response.
"It must be really important, Dad," you added, before turning your attention back to the door.
Yoongi, who had been quietly working on the couch, looked up as a man around your father's age entered the room.
"Good evening, Ms. Min," the man said, bowing politely.
"Oh, please, no need for formalities. Have a seat," you gestured to the couch and smiled warmly.
The man smiled back and took a seat. Yoongi and your father positioned themselves on either side of you, a protective gesture that did not go unnoticed.
"My name is Byun Byun-Jae. I traveled from Seoul specifically to see you, Ms. Min," he said, his tone earnest.
You frowned slightly, intrigued by the unexpected visit
"Why?" Yoongi asked bluntly, cutting to the chase.
"I've filed a review petition on the judgment of my case, and I want Ms. Min to represent me," Byun-Jae replied.
"Is there a shortage of attorneys in Seoul or something?" Yoongi scoffed, clearly not receiving a good feeling about the situation.
You shot a disapproving glance at Yoongi before addressing Byun-Jae with a calm smile. "I understand, Mr. Byun. Please tell me more about your case."
"My son died under mysterious circumstances," Byun-Jae began, his voice trembling. "I was he killed him. I filed a case against him, but the judgment was unjust. He manipulated all the evidence, and as a result, my son did not receive the justice he deserved. After much courage I filed the lawsuit again. Please, Ms. Min, I need your help. That man is truly cruel."
Byunjae's voice broke as he spoke, revealing the depth of his distress. Down in tears, you gave him the tissue and sat beside him patting his shoulders; this gesture was not appreciated by your father and brother.
"Please calm down, Mr. Byun. But who is this 'him' you're referring to?" you asked, trying to gather more information.
"Kim Ja-Kyung," Byun-Jae answered, his voice shaking.
At the mention of Kim Ja-Kyung, both you and Yoongi were taken aback, your jaws dropping in shock.
"What?!" Yoongi exclaimed; his disbelief evident.
"Please, Ms. Min, help me," Mr. Byun begged, tears streaming down his face. "Bring justice for my son."
You watched as Mr. Byun broke down, unable to hold back his anguish. Your father, sensing the gravity of the situation, patted Mr. Byun's shoulder in sympathy.
"Calm down, Mr. Byun," your father said gently. "We will see what we can do."
"Please," Mr. Byun pleaded through his tears; his desperation palpable.
Later that evening, after Mr. Byun had left, you sat at the dining table with your tense father and brother. Your mother was out for the night, leaving the atmosphere heavy with unease.
"Kim Ja-Kyung is a mob leader, Y/N," Yoongi said seriously. He was trying to dissuade you from taking on the case.
You, however, were resolute, and that worried both your father and brother. "I couldn't stand seeing that old man crying, brother," you said firmly.
"But—" Yoongi began, trying to argue, but you cut him off.
"I'm taking this case," you declared with unwavering determination. You stood up from the table, your decision made.
Your father and brother sighed deeply, their concern growing as they watched you leave. They knew all too well that once you made up your mind, nothing would change it.
