| CHAPTER 15 |
After a lunch that was supposed to be enjoyable, you returned home feeling emotionally drained. Seokjin's wife had basically accused you of being a homewrecker, but you couldn't be bothered by her insecurities. It wasn't your fault she lacked trust in her own husband.
Still, it had turned out to be one of the worst Sundays you'd ever had. You remember how excited you were about this lunch, but nothing happens your way anyways.
As you entered the house, the comforting scent of dinner greeted you. Yoongi was quietly cooking in the kitchen. You both sat down to eat in silence, the tension from the afternoon still clinging to you.
"How was the lunch?" Yoongi finally asked, breaking the stillness. Your mind flashed back to the chaotic meal, but you knew telling him the truth would set him off. He'd probably march over to Seokjin's house and sue him on the spot.
"It was fine, but I'm just really tired," you answered, dodging the situation smoothly.
Yoongi studied your face and nodded. "Rest up, you look exhausted."
You gave a small, grateful smile, hugging him goodnight before heading to your room, desperate for some peace.
The next morning, you woke up early, feeling refreshed after an early night's sleep. Determined to make progress on Byun's case, with the hearing fast approaching, you knew today was going to be a busy one.
I should look over some files on Baekho, you thought. There might be something useful I missed.
After a quick breakfast with Yoongi, who had already noticed you were deep in thought, he offered to drop you off at the office. You accepted, appreciating the quiet drive before a hectic day.
Once you arrived, you headed straight to your desk, ready to dive in.
After some time, Jackson greeted you with his usual bright smile. You smiled back, already feeling more at ease in his presence.
"Ah, I was waiting for you, Mr. Boyfriend," you teased, unable to resist.
Jackson's smile dropped into a mock frown. "Hey, is that my new name now?" he asked, clearly annoyed by your constant teasing.
You chuckled. "Haha, yeah. It suits you."
He pouted dramatically and plopped down into the chair across from you. "One of these days, I'm going to make you regret that," he muttered playfully.
"Yeah, sure," you smirked, unfazed. "Anyway, I think we should look into some of Baekho's personal stuff for evidence."
Jackson raised an eyebrow. "Personal stuff...?"
"Yeah," you said, leaning forward. "Like his documents, maybe even a diary... basically, his house."
He nodded thoughtfully. "So we're talking about going through his private space?"
"Exactly," you confirmed. "There might be something there that can give us an edge in court."
Jackson sighed, rubbing his chin. "Let's hope we find something solid."
"You go to Mr. Byun's house, and I'll head over to Baekhyun's," you said, standing up and stretching a little.
Jackson groaned dramatically. "Ahh... so much work," he whined, slumping further into his chair.
You narrowed your eyes at him and mimicked his tone. "So MuCh WoRK," you repeated mockingly, glaring at him for extra effect.
He sat up with a sigh, running a hand through his hair. "Fine, fine. Let's get this over with."
"Let's go," you said, already heading toward the door. Jackson trailed behind, mumbling under his breath.
You took a cab to Byun Baekhyun's house since his father mentioned that Baekho often spent most of his time there. You were certain you'd find something useful.
After 20 minutes, you were standing in front of Baekhyun's door.
You knocked, and Baekhyun greeted you politely.
"Please have a seat, Miss Min," Baekhyun gestured toward a couch.
"Just call me Y/N, Mr. Byun," you replied with a smile.
"So, tell me, where are those threats you received from Jae-Kyung's men?" you asked, watching as Baekhyun nodded and headed into another room. While he was gone, you took a moment to analyze the place.
It was a small and cozy place suitable for 2 people. There were pictures of Baekhyun with his brother smiling happily posing for the graduation ceremony
From what I deduce about baekho's is that he was an ambitious boy. He wanted to become a support ladder for his father and his brother.
You couldn't shake the feeling. His father, with no ties to the mafia... then why would such an innocent boy meet such a tragic end?
You were lost in your thoughts when Baekhyun's voice pulled you back. He sat across from you, holding a blue folder in his hands.
"These are the letters I received as threats," he said, handing you the folder.
Opening it, you found pages filled with abusive language and chilling death threats. There were about 10-15 letters, all vile and menacing.
"Thanks for the neat work, Mr. Byun. You really put in a lot of effort," you said, appreciating how meticulously he had maintained such crucial evidence.
This could certainly prove that Ja-Kyung's men were threatening Baekho, but the case would be much stronger with a witness. How should I find one?
"I only need justice for my brother's death, that's it," Baekhyun's voice was filled with quiet determination.
You nodded, your mind racing with the next steps. "Can I check out the room where Baekho stayed?"
"Upstairs, to the right. Feel free to take a look. I'll get some snacks ready," he replied, before heading to the kitchen.
You climbed the stairs and entered the room. It was what you'd expect from a teenage boy. Posters of famous football players lined the walls, a gaming PC stood proudly in one corner, and a single bed was neatly made. It looked lived-in, yet untouched, as though frozen in time.
You looked around the room, hoping to find something like a personal diary, but came up empty. Who writes in a diary these days, anyway? you thought. Maybe the PC could help.
Putting on disposable gloves, you powered on the computer. Thankfully, there was no password—Baekhyun clearly trusted his brother.
The PC had a vibrant wallpaper that caught your eye. You scanned through the applications, searching for anything that might be an online diary. A diary is supposed to be private, so he likely hid it somewhere.
As you browsed, you noticed an option labeled "Hidden Apps." Curious, you clicked on it, revealing a list of hidden applications. Your heart raced; this could be what you needed
You felt a rush of relief as you found the hidden diary, but your excitement quickly faded when you realized it was locked with a code. What could it be?
You racked your brain, trying to think of possible combinations when Baekhyun's voice broke your concentration.
"Y/N, are you done yet?!"
"Yeah, I'm coming!" you called back, quickly shutting down the computer.
You joined him in the living room, slightly flustered.
"Have some snacks?" he offered.
"Sure!" you replied, sinking into the couch.
"What were you doing back there?" he asked, curious.
"Nothing, just analyzing," you smiled, trying to hide your thoughts about the code.
Baekhyun studied you with a hint of suspicion.
"I opened his PC earlier but didn't find anything useful. It'll save time if you don't try that again," he said, and you looked at him, dumbfounded.
How did he guess you were looking at the computer?
You offered a sheepish smile and quickly changed the subject. "Can you tell me more about Baekho?"
"There's not much to say. He was a normal guy, just a huge football fan."
"That much is clear from his posters," you laughed.
After enjoying some snacks, he handed you the folder.
As you drove home, your mind raced with thoughts. A football fan... What if the birthdays of those players could be the code?
You couldn't shake the idea as you envisioned the posters in his room.
You arrived at your office and settled in, feeling the weight of the previous day's events. Just as you were getting into the flow of your work, Jackson called.
"I didn't find anything special at Mr. Byun Byunjae's house," he said, a hint of frustration in his voice.
"Come back to my office; don't worry about it," you replied, cutting the call and returning to the pile of threat letters on your desk.
You were deep in thought when Mark entered, a puzzled expression on his face.
"Miss Min, you have visitors," he announced, glancing at you for your reaction.
You frowned, wondering who could possibly want to see you. "Who is it?" you asked, feeling a slight knot of anxiety form in your stomach.
"Kim Seokjin and his wife, Kim Jieun," he replied.
Your heart sank.
Just what you needed right now.
