Letters

"I love you, Mr Laurens," Alessia whispered as soon as they broke apart.

"I love you, too, Mrs Laurens."

"How is it to be away from your wife already?", John teased Alexander as they made their way to the canteen for breakfast. Hercules behind them let out a whine and Lafayette laughed loudly.

Alexander rolled his eyes and shoved John slightly "C'mon man! Gimme a break!"

John laughed along with Lafayette and Hercules, Alexander joining in shortly after. They arrived to their usual table after grabbing their food and sat down. They were talking and laughing along each other as they are, until an errand boy came in and yelled "Field post!"

Names were called, people got up to grab their mail and John nearly jumped in joy when his name was called. Quickly he got to his feet and headed over to grab his mail, before he sat back down. He was more than delighted to see Alessias familiar handwriting on the front of the envelope.

"Ooooh he finally got what he wanted!", Lafayette said with a smirk. "Open up!", Alexander said, grinning at john, who laughed and replied "Since when are you interested in what your sister writes?"

"Oh I already know what she wrote you, I got my mail earlier than a certain someone, you see," Alexander stuck his tongue out like a little child, playing the bonus of his last name coming long before Laurens in the list.

John in return now frowned at his best friend who only wiggled with his eyebrows. He shook his head slightly before he turned his attention to the letter of his wife.

My dearest and most beloved John,

I hope you're okay. I myself have been great, as I've been blessed with the greatest of news. But I'll save that for later.

I apologize that I have not been able to write earlier to you, my love, I do hope you can accept my apology, as I've become quite busy with writing against slavery.

Someone has criticized my work against the Virginian slavery laws and I cannot let that slide. Out of a earlier collection of twenty-seven essays now have turned a collection of seventy-two. I do admit that I let myself go a little. That's what's kept me busy the past months so I do apologize once more.

I'm still not done, to have that said, as I've not yet made my point clear enough. The person who dared to go against me has clearly guts, but I'll make sure for him to lose that soon.

Anyways, now to the great news I've been blessed with shortly after you departed.

You're going to be a father.

I love you and I apologize once more for not having written earlier.

Your dearest,

A. Laurens

John had to reread the last few passages twice, gaping like a fish at his letter, before he looked up at Alexander with that same shocked expression, Alex only nodding.

John slowly closed his mouth, still staring at the words 'You're going to be a father' with wide eyes, before he began to smile [brighter than the sun] .

It took him quite a lot of willpower to not jump up squealing like a teenage girl. He was going to be a dad! [ LOOK AT THIS PRECIOUS CHILD ]

"What's going on?", Hercules asked, looking from Alex to John, mildly confused.

"I'm going to be a father!", John finally revealed. In return, Hercules and Lafayette began to cheer together with Alexander.

My dearest and beloved Alessia,

You will not believe me when I tell you how happy I am about those news. However, I'm a little mad that Alexander knew before me (only because Hamilton comes long before Laurens!).

I simply can't wait to come home when all of this is over and meet you and our child. I'm so, so happy about these news!

And now, considering your essay collection. Please tell me that you're getting enough rest. I hope you don't spend day and night writing those essays, as that is quite a number, considering that I left a month after our wedding.

I apologize that I have to keep this short. But I'll have you informed that I'm going to head to South Carolina next month, so that you'll readdress the mail there.

I love you,

Your most obedient and beloved husband,

J. Laurens

Dearest John,

I'm happy to say that our child is finally here. A healthy girl. I've decided to name her Frances Eleanor.

She has your hair. And your eyes. She just reminds me of you. I miss you so much, I wish you could be here to meet her. But I understand that the war is more important, as you're fighting to secure our future.

I'll have you know that I've been getting enough rest, which was quite important considering that rest will now be rare, now that Frances is in our lives.

I love you. Please come home soon.

Yours sincerely,

A. Laurens

My beloved Alessia,

I'm sorry that I took so long to reply. I've heard the battle of Yorktown went in our favor, but down in South Carolina I'm still working hard to recruit new men for an all black battalion.

I'm so happy to know that we have a healthy daughter. Frances Eleanor is such a beautiful name. I'd give anything to meet our little girl right now. But this down here is keeping me quite busy, so I deeply apologize.

I've read your renewed work against the Virginian slavery laws and I must say, I'm impressed. I hope the person that went against you has learned their lesson because after that declaration I wouldn't want to fight you.

I can't wait to see you again.

Much love,

J. Laurens

My love,

Today is Frances' first birthday. She definitely has your hair, her curls are too adorable. It makes me wonder what you looked like as a child. She's such a happy nature, she lights up this house.

Frances and Philip have been getting along quite well, she acts like an older sister to him. It does good for me to visit my brother, his wife and their child. Philip is a great boy. He definitely comes after his father with what I can already see. Somehow it's only natural for the Hamilton children to come after their father, me being the exception as I've always been told I come after my grandmother.

I can't wait to see you again. I hope everything's going great in South Carolina.

I love you,

A. Laurens

My dearest most beloved wife,

You are too precious for this world. I don't know what I've done to deserve you, or Frances in that matter. I love you more than anything in this world, both of you. You're the most important things in my life and I wish I'd never have to let you go.

It's going great here, the battalion I'm trying to set up keeps on growing and growing. By the looks of it I'm coming home soon. I just can't wait.

Lots of love from me to you my beloved,

Your one and only,

J. Laurens

August 24th 1782

My dearest and most loved John,

With every day passing I miss you more in more. It's getting harder for me every day. I miss you so much it hurts sometimes.

Frances looks more and more like you, she's slowly getting freckles. I do hope she gets my attitude, so she has at least something from me.

I can't wait for you to come home. I'm running out of ideas what to write, as nothing exciting seems to happen around me. Nobody dares to go against me anymore.

I love you and can't wait to hold you in my arms again.

Your beloved,

A. Laurens

A knock on the door pulled Alessias attention away from the book she was reading for her daughter. Frances let out a small sound of disagreement as her mother stopped, looking up at her with her brown eyes.

Alessia put the book to the side and picked Frances up "Let's see who's disturbing our reading time. That's a shame, nobody is allowed to do that, right?" Frances only nodded and smiled at Alessia, who smiled back brightly and kissed her forehead.

As she opened the door, she was met by George Washington, his bicorn in his hands, next to him was Hercules who held a blue bundle, which she quickly recognized as a coat, in his hands.

"Mrs Laurens?", Washington asked, a pitying look in his eyes.

"That's me. How may I help you?", Alessia asked with a frown, looking from Washington to Hercules and back.

"We should discuss this inside."
