The night was still and the air crisp. Yoongi took a deep breath inward, inhaling the cool breeze that ran gently through the neighbourhood. It was his third day staying in the American estate with Sydney, the girl who had taken him in after he had awoken, shaken and injured from the crash. That must have been at least four days ago. News of an injured passenger in the plane wreck had given him hope that the other members could be alive out there.
He leant on the fence of Sydney's garden, looking out into the forest in the fading light of the evening. Night time was most dangerous - that's when the monsters came out. Zombies were always a strongly sceptical concept for the young man. The living dead seemed like a fantasy. The recent events, the plane crash and the discovery of these creatures, had finally sunk into him and he had been shaken from reality into some distorted and dream-like dimension. Or was it the other way around?
Yoongi had been given the task of "guarding the fort", as Sydney had put it, until she got back from her rescue and recovery mission but scavenging the other houses seemed like a better use of the time. It was a quiet night and all three gates to the neighbourhood were locked. The rapper had never visited such a rich estate, one with a fence all the way around and beautiful white, wooden houses with clear roads. This would have been his dream childhood, living somewhere like this. The night was falling fast and he decided to boil the kettle. All electricity in the neighbourhood had shut off but luckily the gas was still available but it wasn't going to be long before that goes too.
Sydney's house was large, well larger than any he had ever lived in. The kitchen was located on the ground floor, along with the living room, hall and bathroom. Upstairs were the four bedrooms and an additional bathroom.
The kitchen was dark apart from the slight light being emitted from the gas hob. Yoongi filled the kettle with water and placed it on the stove. Looking out of the window and into the darkness, he could just make out shapes. Then there was movement and his heart stopped. He squinted, moving away from the stove and pressed his hands against the cool glass.
Two figures stood outside the gate, one with their hand reaching through the metal bars and fiddling with the bolt. It was Sydney to the Korean's relief. Running into the cool night air, Yoongi went to assist his friend.
"Tae!" the rapper exclaimed in joy as he saw his two friends behind the girl. Hoseok was sat up on a stretcher that was laid on the ground as the others stopped what they were doing and stood in silence. Yoongi heard it too. A scream.
"Jungkook?" Hoseok queried after taking a short intake of breath and gazing out into the forest. He was right.
"I'll bring him in. I'll join you in a minute!" Sydney said with a harsh whisper to Yoongi who fiddled with the gate until it opened enough for the brigade to come through.
He rushed into the forest, the cool air burning his throat. His breath was like smoke. The scream had come from the right of their settlement and Yoongi was desperate to find anyone.
"We're going to leave you here okay?" Sydney gestured to Hoseok who was dumped on a sofa in the sitting room. Taehyung gave his friend a quick but very tight squeeze before rushing out of the house to follow Yoongi.
"Don't move! We'll be back soon!" She waved and left too. Hoseok was now on his own.
The rooms were dark and that frightened the rapper. A chandelier cloaked in darkness hung above him from the high ceiling. The house was certainly luxurious, but the circumstances took away the awe.
Sleep weighing down his eyelids, he decided to sleep. He would wake up in the morning and be back with the rest of Bangtan Boys... well that was his plan.
