Chapter 34: A Way Out
Hey! Sorry this chapter took so long. Admittedly I'm not sure why it did, considering last night I wrote this all in about 30 minutes. I've been doing a lot of thinking, and to be honest I have no idea how I'm going to write a sequel for this like everyone wants. If someone, anyone, has an idea- please let me know! It will be great. =) Anyhow, hope you all enjoy. =)

Adrianna felt disgusting as she dunked her arm into the large fish tank at her work. It was her day to clean all the tanks, on top of her typical duties of fishing the fish out of the tank if someone wanted to buy them. Sometimes she truly hated working here; she always came home smelling like fish, and not to mention the tediousness of the job. Every day it was the same thing; the only thing that she could hope for was some of the fish getting sick so she could treat them, or having one of the other employees leaving the birdcages open again. If she could use one word to describe her job it would probably be lackluster.
She sighed angrily as one of the fish jumped from the tank, making her have to climb back down the ladder to pick it off the ground. The girl delicately scooped the fish up before climbing back up the ladder, dropping it back in the water expertly. She snatched the sponge from the top of the waterline again and began to scrub the algae off the side of the tank. She blew an errant strand out of her eyes as she noticed one of her coworkers approaching her. He was the last person she wanted to talk to right then. Don't get her wrong, she loved Alex, and he was a good friend; she just didn't want to have any distractions right then.
"Hey Dree," he called up at her. "Having fun yet?"
"No Alex," she muttered back. "I can't say wasting my day away scrubbing fish tanks is fun in any way, shape, or form."
Alex grimaced. "You used to love cleaning them. What happened?"
Adrianna rolled her eyes. "Reality hit."
"Reality hit you? Of all people?" he raised an eyebrow to her. "You've got to be the only one in here with a way out of here. Why haven't you taken it yet?"
A way out? Adrianna wished she had a way out of here. But as a student putting herself through college, she didn't have the option of leaving. She was curious to know what Alex had meant by that. "Alright. Enlighten me. What's my way out?" she replied, glancing at him over her shoulder.
Alex adjusted his glasses and cleared his throat. "Aren't you seeing Tom Felton? Haven't you been seeing him for several months now?"
Adrianna was not quite sure where he was going with this. "I've been seeing him a little over four months now. Why do you ask?"
"There you go. Get hitched and then you don't have to worry about working another day in your life," Alex went on.
Adrianna felt her eyes roll again. This time she dropped the sponge in the tank, nearly hitting several fish in the process. She turned to face her friend, taking a few steps down the ladder. "I'm not going to freeload off my boyfriend. You of all people should know that I'm not like that." Then she remembered what he had said. "Besides, I'm not rushing into getting, as you say, hitched. And I'm sure Tom's not either."
"I didn't necessarily mean now, dork," Alex corrected himself, leaning against a nearby shelf. "I mean that he is your ticket out of here if you manage to keep him around."
"I plan on keeping him, thank you very much," Adrianna interrupted. "And why do you say that? I'm not going to use him as a meal ticket."
"Well, what I mean is, what if he manages to snag you a movie deal or something? Wouldn't that be awesome? You're certainly pretty enough to be a movie star, Dree," Alex explained himself. "If that were to happen, you could leave and never have to come back. Unless of course you need fish food or something."
Adrianna pondered the thought over silently in her head. Her? A movie star? Not even in her wildest dreams did she think that was possible. But then again, not even her wildest dreams was Tom Felton her boyfriend, at least not until recently. As cool as it would be, Adrianna certainly didn't want to think about it, or ask either. It wasn't her lifestyle. Adrianna liked being behind the scenes, not noticed by the public. But as of recent, she had been stepping out of that shadow all the more frequently.
She shrugged her shoulders at the thought. "It would be pretty cool, but I don't think it's in the cards, Alex. I mean, I'm sure Tom could pull some strings if I asked him too, but I'm fine with this for now. I just want to live a normal life." But even as she said it, Adrianna wondered how her life would ever be normal with Tom in the picture. Not everyone got to date a celebrity, after all. "I just want to go to school, and have a life better than what I had in Detroit. That's it."
"But your life is already better than that, isn't it?"
Alex had a point. There was no more Matthias controlling her life. She had a job that helped her just enough to pay for what the government wasn't paying for her schooling, and her bills of course. She was dating Tom Felton, the man of her dreams. She had her friends with her. She wasn't living in a crime-infested city. Adrianna did have a better life here in London, even if it included cleaning fish tanks.
"Not what I meant," she sighed.
Before Alex could inquire about what she meant, a voice interrupted their conversation. "Well, good afternoon Dree."
Adrianna didn't even have to look over to know it was Tom, but she did anyways. He had never visited her at work before, and now she was suddenly embarrassed. She certainly didn't want him to see her like this. Her hair was pulled back in the messiest ponytail the world had ever seen, she was covered in dirty water; this was not how she wanted her boyfriend to see her. "Hey babe," she greeted, a small smile on her face.
Tom stopped in front of her, kissing the top of her head gently. "How are you today?" he asked, pulling his sunglasses to the top of his head so he could see her better.
"Um... alright I suppose," she answered him, unsurely. She watched Alex walk awkwardly away; he obviously didn't want to intrude on their conversation. "I wasn't expecting you, so I was kind of elbow deep in fishy water. So... I'll let you fill in the blanks there."
Tom chuckled lightly at his girlfriend. "Just wanted to surprise you. I hadn't done this yet, so I thought why not?"
Adrianna smiled back at him. "What's the occasion? You don't do random things like this for no reason."
Tom smiled again, glancing at the floor briefly before looking back at her. "Well, I have to ask you something."
Adrianna's mind raced. What could Tom possibly want to ask her? Now of all times? He couldn't have done this later, when they were at home and she wasn't soaked with dirty water? "What's that?" she inquired, not sure if she wanted to know the answer.
Tom took a deep breath before answering her. "Well... remember that movie I was filming a few months ago?" Adrianna nodded, allowing him to continue. "I was wondering if you wanted to go with me to Hollywood next week for the premiere. You'd have to get a dress and everything, but we have time. It's up to you; I certainly don't want to force you to go."
A huge smile stretched across her face. "Of course I'll go!" she assured, sounding the happiest she had sounded in weeks.
"Excellent! Glad to hear that," Tom replied. "We'll go get you a dress tomorrow, alright, darling?"
Adrianna nodded enthusiastically. "Sounds good to me!"
Tom gave her a quick kiss on the lips before he said, "Alright, we'll talk more when you get home. I certainly don't want to interrupt your fishing duties any longer." He laughed for a second before concluded. "I love you, Dree. See you soon."
"I love you too, Tom," Adrianna answered. "See you in a bit!"
She watched Tom walk away from her. She was going to Hollywood! The girl had never been farther west than Chicago, so she was certainly excited to go. And of course, being with Tom doing what he loved made it all the better. But then she remembered something. Was she going to be handle all the paparazzi and screaming fans? She sincerely hoped this was a test she would be able to pass.
