Chapter Eight ~ A Deadly Prophecy
Warning: A few swear words
Angelina Phillips POV
Five years ago...
"You filthy half-breed!" He screamed at me. It was always the same. The exact same thing, over and over. At the time, I never understood it, yet now I do.
My breath was quick as I had sprinted through the house into the kitchen, my father trailing behind me. In desperation, my hands grabbed a frying pan from the cupboard and held it up in front of my face.
He screamed at me, his bloodshot eyes insane and crazy. Every few nights he was like this, drunk and out of control. I had tried to call the police but he would tell them that it was just a hallucination. There were some nights when he wasn't too drunk and ignored me, but at least once a week this happened. I would normally escape the house for a few days, sprinting around to my Gran's, but this night I made a decision.
I whacked him over the head with the pan, leaped over his body, dodged his attempted grabs at my legs and sprinted up the stairs. He groaned from the floor where I had 'accidentally' kicked him in the gut.
When I had made it to my room, I grabbed my emergency bag and slung it over my shoulder. But before I could escape, my dad appeared in the doorway.
"Just like your mother." He spat. "Always running away from me. One day appeared to me with you. Said that I had to look after you until someone else arrived to take you away. That pathetic little bitch."
"I don't care." I snapped, anger replacing my fear. Yet then when I was only a small ten year-old, I was still afraid. This was my father, the man who had fallen in love with my mother. Back then, he was a kind young person who lived a peaceful life. Then when he met my mother, he changed. She told him that they could get married, and he believed it. He was drunk on that dream. They were together for a year before I was born. She handed me over to him, then turned on her heel and left. Ever since he's turned bitter and cold, always drinking and ignoring me, when he doesn't he's always shouting.
He spotted the bag. "You're not leaving." He growled. "Not until you tell me WHERE YOUR MOTHER IS!"
"She's long gone!" I screamed back at him, tears trailing down my cheeks.
"Don't you dare fucking scream at me." He shrieked. "You're staying in your room for the rest of the week!" Then he slammed the door shut, locking it from the outside.
After he left, I had collapsed onto the floor with my face in my hands. Why would he do this?
The window! My mind whispered back to me urgently. There was a small window on the wall of my tiny room, just large enough to climb through. But the only problem was that the ground was a floor below me.
I stood up and marched over to the window and unlatched it, swinging it open to it's full extent. Then I grabbed my bag and pulled myself up onto the ledge. There was a high fence next to the window, so I draped my legs over it and pushed myself into sitting position on it. Then I turned around carefully so that I was facing the house and jumped down into the little stretch of land below me.
My feet stumbled on the ground, but I quickly sprinted along the side of the house and out the front, before running along the street. Drops of water fell onto my head for a minute before the sky sent waterfalls of grey pounding down onto me. Yet I continued on.
When I made it around the block to my Gran's house, my feet stopped screaming. I stood puffing on the pavement, my arms wrapped around my soaked body. Then I spotted the ambulance. It was parked up the driveway, and the doctors were carrying a stretcher into it. As pale as a sheep, my grandmother lay still on it.
Tears formed in my eyes as I turned from the scene and sprinted in the opposite direction. She was gone.
I was only ten when I ran away. Aphrodite found me four days later and took me in. She trained me to become an Aphrodite Ranger, and until three years later, I lived at an Aphrodite Ranger's base. A daughter of Athena tutored me on the events of the demigod world, and on my thirteenth birthday, Aphrodite took me to Camp Half-Blood to discover my godly parent.
It was my seventh day there when it happened. At the campfire I had not been claimed yet, and I was getting a bit restless. I walked along the fireworks beach around twenty minutes before dinner, thinking. What if I wasn't claimed? Then I spotted the oracle, Rachel Dare. She ran up to me.
"The presence." She breathed. "It's returned." Then her eyes glowed green and green smoke suddenly seemed to appear, wrapping itself around her legs.
"What?" I demanded. This was getting a bit creepy.
"The presence." Rachel murmured, before the oracle took over her body.
I am the spirit of Delphi, speaker of the prophecies of Phoebus Apollo, slayer of the mighty Python. Approach seeker, and ask. She said, her eyes glowing green and the smoke curling around my legs. I stumbled back.
"Um..." I didn't know what to say. "What is my fate?"
The Rangers of Aphrodite shall find,
The betrayer and the brave one of a kind.
Their top pairing shall fall,
And in the face of hope the blessed one shall call.
A decision by death to be portrayed,
By the lost one who betrayed.
Her allies will be the ones to break her flesh and bones,
Yet guilt will be her final groans.
I got scared. So I did the natural thing; I ran. Sand flew up around me as I sprinted into the forest. Nature had always calmed me. Amongst the trees I sat, enjoying the pine smell and the sound of birds' wings fluttering unseen high above as I thought over what Rachel had said. What did it mean?
Suddenly a bright green light engulfed me. A wheat symbol appeared above me head like a holographic image, which meant that I had been claimed. Sprinting back to the camp, I stopped in the centre of the cabins as everyone looked at me, then bowed. "All hail Angelina Phillips, daughter of Demeter." Chiron bellowed.
I just stood there in shock as Katie came up to me and lead me to their-my cabin. At the camp fire that night I was blessed by Aphrodite. Not in the beauty way that her children got claimed in, the way where I start to glow pink and Chiron nodded his head before I am whisked away to Aphrodite. I trained at theAphrodite Rangers in the wintry months but went to Camp Half-Blood in the Summer. You may be wondering why I didn't just stay at the Camp Half-Blood Branch. I go backwards and forwards from the CJ and the CHB HQs all the time; it's sometimes easy to forget which is which!
That was why I was worried when Amy and Sophia arrived. I wasn't sure if the prophecy would happen, but it was hard to tell now.
The Rangers of Aphrodite shall find,
The betrayer and the brave one of a kind.
I have a feeling that 'the betrayer' and the 'brave one of a kind' are Sophia and Amy. But I could be wrong.
Their top pairing shall fall,
And in the face of hope the blessed one shall call.
A top priority couple will break up. Could this be connected to the STS?
A decision by death to be portrayed,
By the lost one who betrayed.
Touch and go for the betrayer. If we figure out who it is. They mightn't betray us yet.
Her allies will be the ones to break her bones,
Yet guilt will be her final groans.
Those two last lines worried me the most. I didn't want think on them any further.
Amy stirred in her sleep as I lay awake staring at the bunk above me. "Trouble getting sleep?" Sophia whispered, rolling over in her bunk to face me. Her brilliant blue eyes stared at me calmly, like peace in the middle of a storm.
"Yeah." I replied. We were silent for a moment before I spoke again. "How do you take it?"
"What?" She murmured.
"Just this morning you were prepared for a normal day. Now it's gone out the window."
Sophia sighed. "My life has never been normal. All the time these strange monsters appeared and I got scared. My mother only laughs at me then goes off to perform. We move city every few months so that the paparazzi don't attack us with cameras. Then one night in a dream this lady spoke to me. She said that help was coming and I had a place somewhere far away. After, she said that she had blessed me or something. Three days later you showed up." She sighed.
"What did the women look like?" I asked.
"She had sleek dark hair and bright green eyes. Her skin was smooth and flawless and she wore a gold and white greek-styled dress with peacock feather patterns."
I sat up. "Peacock feather patterns?"
Sophia frowned. "Yeah, why?"
"That must've been a goddess." I muttered. "Either Demeter, Aphrodite or Hera. Athena, Artemis and Hestia I can't really see wearing that, but I'm thinking that was Hera."
Sophia sat up. "The Queen of Olympus visited me in a dream and said that she had blessed me?"
I nodded my head numbly and stood up out of my bunk, standing there in the dark in only my pyjamas. "We have to go talk to Julie."
A/N:
Bam! One chapter with an important prophecy.
Yes, one of the main characters is going to die if you haven't figured that out. Sophia has been blessed by Hera and a single day has passed in eight chapters.
I know Angelina is a bit cliché with her father and all, sorry.
More songs please!! The only one who is commenting is @InsaneGreek1 (your songs will be over the next few chapters) and I think one or two others on the last chapter, otherwise I NEED SONGS FOR SOTC!!!!!!!!
