Chapter Nine: Falling Faster
He says something from outside, but the glass of the window muffles his voice. I hesitate to let him into my car, my hand placed firmly into the pocket that holds the knife. Taking a deep breath, I hastily unlock the door and Silas hurries into the passenger seat in less than a minute. "Why the hell did you scream?" He questions as I still try to catch my speeding breath.
"I'm at some stranger's house in the middle of nowhere in the dark! What did you think I was gonna do?"
Silas smirks, closing the door to the car. "Fair point. This part of town is its own horror movie," he claims.
I let out a hammering sigh, calming my racing heartbeat. "Why are you even in my car? Don't you have your own?" I ask, fidgeting with my fingers. My hand keeps a close distance to the knife in my pocket.
"Because we've got business to take care of, and it's not on Cyclone Road, Hewitt," he replies, emphasizing on my new last name. "And yes, but my car's out of gas." He then types something into my GPS and I look at him confused.
"What are your doing?"
"Well you need to know where to go, don't you?" He replies, concentrating on the GPS.
"Yeah, so you should tell me where we're going before you start screwing up my car!" I slap his hand away, yet his expression remains still and cold. "Now what do I have to do to get you off my ass for good?"
Silas sits back into the seat, his arm resting on the ledge of the car door. "How about for once, I ask a question," he says, smugly. "Why are you so against me?"
I laugh. "That's hilarious. Even you should know the answer to that." Silas looks at me as if he's awaiting some kind of answer. I run my tongue along the rim of my bottom teeth. He's completely clueless. "Fine, let me spell it out for you." I hold up my fingers and point to each one as I begin to list things off. "You blackmail me into helping you with... whatever it is we're doing. You lead me to some remote house in the pitch black. And you're an arrogant little shit that has no compassion once or ever. Does that answer your question?"
I barely get a reaction out of him. God, it's like he's made of stone. "You'd very much like this conversation to be over, wouldn't you?"
"What gave it away?" At this point, we both are sitting forward, just staring out into the inky abyss of night. My knife is still sitting in my pocket, just waiting for its chance to breach a layer of skin and draw blood. "Look I just want to get this over and done with," I say, not eyeing him.
"My thoughts exactly, but you're the one behind the wheel."
I groan and start the engine, still not making eye contact with him.
The drive is quiet, apart from the nagging and annoying voice of my GPS telling me when and where to turn or stop. I don't say a word to Silas. I just want to get this, whatever this is over with so I can move on with my life. That being said, there's no guarantee that this will all end after tonight. For all I know, he has this whole plot neatly planned out. I do this favor for him and he still stabs me in the back, getting away with everything and leaving me on a rack to dry. Whatever happens, someone is going to get what's coming to them.
As I'm driving, I glance over at Silas for a split second before whipping my head forward. "You still haven't answered my question," I say.
"Which question?" He asks. I look over at him again and his attention is clearly on his phone.
"You said you were gonna tell me what you want me to do," I remind him. His eyes don't leave the glow of his phone screen. "Or did you change your mind about the whole deal and now you're just sending me on a wild goose chase?"
He types something on his phone and sends it in the form of a text. I only know because I can hear the sound effects on repeat every time he even touches the screen. "You know, I'm still kinda shocked you accepted my offer in the first place."
"Okay, will you stop that?" I raise my voice, and for a moment, I lose my concentration on the road and begin to drift off to the opposite side. Luckily, I catch my mistake and regain my full attention.
Silas looks up from his phone. "Stop what?"
"Changing the subject and avoiding the most basic questions. I mean, would it kill you to just answer at least one of them? And I mean with a straight answer?" I ask, still focused on the dark road before me.
"Okay, fine," he says, putting down the phone. "Answer number one: I'll tell you when we get there. Answer number two: Yes, I'm still gonna, or at least try, to get you out of your shell. And answer number three: no, I'm not gonna try to kill you. There, that's three of your questions answered."
My eyebrows furrow in confusion. "Answer number three never even came with a question," I say.
"Maybe not one you asked but that knife in your pocket says otherwise." My eyes bug out and look down at my pocket. I feel the small object inside it but I don't see it. Silas must have caught a glimpse of it when he was outside my window. "So knowing what you know now, I don't think that cheap pocket knife will be necessary now."
I shake my head and release the building tension in one rejuvenating breath. So I may have overreacted by bringing a knife alone with me for my own protection - against Silas - but that doesn't change the fact that I still have no idea where we're going. He's obviously not going to answer anything without a cocky side comment to go along with it, so why should I even bother? Why should I put so much effort into understanding him if he won't give me the time of day? Why? Because it's just who I am. Sorry. "I'm gonna ask one more question," I announce, catching his attention. "What is this really about? The cheating or the potential stalking?"
"We're still calling 'me staking out in front of the school to talk to you' stalking? Well, at least it's potential," he says.
"Not that," I correct. "The other morning."
"What other morning?"
I roll my eyes. "The morning before school. I followed you when you were taking a walk, and it was totally the wrong move. You just seemed familiar so I basically stalked you until you saw me. I do apologize for that, so if that's what this is about-"
"Hold up." He puts his hand up and stops me from speaking. "What morning was this again?"
I take the moment to travel back to the memory and to remember what day was the beginning of my reckoning. "Tuesday, I think. Don't you remember?"
"We're here," Silas replies, though it's not the answer I'm looking for.
The glow of my headlights is enough to allow me to see where we are. I knew the route I was taking seemed familiar. "What are we doing at the school?"
"You are going to do me a favor, remember?" He reminds me, unbuckling himself.
"Yeah, no shit. I mean, what are we doing here?"
Silas opens the car door and steps out, facing me before closing it. "Do you know what a revelation is?"
"Yes," I answer.
"Do you know how to work a computer?"
"Yes."
"Good. Then you're all set." He shuts the door and begins to make his way to the rear end of my car. I hurriedly unbuckle myself as well and remove the car keys from the ignition.
The school appears abandoned. The red bricks that make up the walls are now laced in shadows and the windows are painted black. Campus is definitely less lively without the hoards of people scurrying around like gutter rats.
I cautiously and reluctantly follow Silas across the front yards of the school. Out of all the things he could make me do, he chooses committing a felony as his poison. Realizing that I'm falling behind, a pick up the pace and catch up with Silas. He still hasn't told me what we're doing here, and I'm sick of being kept in the dark.
Almost stumbling on my own feet, I run in front of Silas, catching him by surprise. "I am not taking another step until you tell me why the hell we're breaking the law."
"We're not breaking the law, Hewitt."
"Really? Because I'm pretty sure breaking and entering is a felony in Indianapolis, and in pretty much the entire country." Now I'm getting really irritated. I'm tired of Silas and his empty statements and trick questions that make absolutely no sense. "You promised that this whole ideal wouldn't involve breaking laws and burying dead bodies."
"There aren't any dead bodies," he says.
"There will be if you don't tell me what the hell is going on."
Silas smiles. God, I can never win a battle with him. "We aren't breaking anything. We're just entering," he exclaims, brushing past me. I catch a whiff of his scent as he does. Is that gunpowder?
Ignoring the strange scent, I continue to follow Silas through the labyrinth of gloom. As I walk, I keep catching glimpses of myself in the near future: behind bars, wearing an orange jump-suit, and Dylan on the other side of the bars calling, "Take the plea!" This is one thing that I never thought that I would go to jail for.
Suddenly, I catch the sight of a silhouette deluged in mist and shadows, a figure, approaching Silas and I. The outline begins to multiply until there are three figures walking toward us. I stop in my tracks but Silas keeps walking.
"Silas?" I question, though there is no answer.
He begins walking back with three people following. One is a tall guy with light brown hair that swishes off to the side. A pair of black glasses sits on his face. Another is a girl, much shorter than he is. Her hair is a light blonde with a red streak framing her face. The last is another guy with short, dark hair and other friendly features. Who the hell are these people?
The crowd is now huddled around, the three strangers looking at me with odd expressions. "Rowen, this four-eyed smartass right here is Felix." He introduces me to the tall one in the glasses.
"Hi," I say nervously.
"Wait. She's the one that's gonna do it?" Felix asks.
Silas nods to his friend. "Yup. That's her."
"God, we're screwed," says the blonde girl with the red streak. Her arms are crossed as she leans on me half of her body to the side, putting all of her weight on her left foot.
"That ray of sunshine is Maxi," Silas sarcastically says. Maxi has a disgusted look on her face as her eyes scan over me. It's obvious she already hates me. "And last but not least, that's Ashley." Silas points over to where the second guy stands, and he casually waves to me.
"So Silas, are we gonna do this or what?" Asks Felix, adjusting the backpack that hangs from his shoulder.
"Yeah. Did you disable the cameras?"
"Yup," he replies. "Piece of cake."
"Um, what exactly are we doing?" I ask, sounding rather awkward, and everyone starts looking at me.
Maxi chuckles evilly. "You seriously didn't fill her in on what we're doing?"
Silas shrugs. "She was gonna found out as soon as we got here anyway," he says to her.
Ashley steps forward, handing Maxi and Felix two flashlights and then handing me one. "Someone has done a great injustice, so this is our way of getting revenge," he explains, testing out the flashlight.
"And who are you getting revenge on?" I ask, testing mine as well.
"The devil herself, of course," Silas replies. "Olivia Spinelli."
