Before Everything
A two year-old blonde walked hand-in-hand with the seventeen year-old. The younger had a large smile on her face. "Mom said she's making Japanese food!"
The elder male chuckled. "Did she now?"
"Mmhm! Mmhm!" The little girl started skipping. "They're called sushi, ramen and oni... Oni..."
"The riceballs you mean? Onigiri?" He asked.
"That's it!"
"If you have trouble pronouncing it in Japanese, just say it in English." He suggested.
However, the younger girl shook her head. "Nu-uh! I wanna learn Japanese too!" She began tugging on her brother's sleeve. "You're gonna teach me, right?"
"Yes, yes, of course." He replied. "We're going to move back to Japan soon anyway, so it'll be good if you could learn the local language beforehand."
"Mmm." It was silent for a few minutes, but she decided to open her mouth again. "And then dad says he's having a few friends over too."
"Oh really? Did he mentioned who?"
"Leff... Loff... Loll... Uhm..." The younger girl stopped to think, but bounced back in an instant. "Love-noff!"
"You mean Levanov?"
"That's it!"
~~~~~
A three year old Russian girl layed her head on the table. "Bored... Bored... Bored... Bo-Bo-Bored..."
"And our little girl is singing her famous bored song again." Her father said with a chuckle.
"We can't help that they are a little late, Niara. Now sit down properly, we're guests." Her mother said as she helped bringing out some of the food.
"Hmm okay..." The little girl sat up again, but her mouth didn't stay shut. "I'm hungry."
"We know, deary. We all are." Her mother said with a sigh. "But we still have to wait. It's impolite to start without them."
"I see Niara is as bright and open as you described her to be, Yana." A blonde woman walked into the room with more food to set down.
"Open? Yes, immensely so. Bright? Not the exact word I'd use, Karen." Another man chuckled from his seat. "For sure I know she's smart, but-"
"Yes, yes. She's lacking in common sense. Don't need to tell me twice, Eric." The little girl's father said, joining in on the laugh. "But because of that, our lives are never boring."
"I'm sure, Stanny." Eric rolled his eyes in a joking manner.
Then, a knock came from the door. The woman named Karen smiled. "That must be the kids. Come in, it's open!"
The door opened to reveal the 17 year old boy and the 2 year old girl. The little girl ran in and hugged her mother's leg. "Mom! Dad! We're back and Hugo taught me how so say 'onigiri'! See? I can say it now!"
"Learning Japanese now, are you?" Karen said, picking up the little girl.
"I figured she might need it for when we move back." Hugo said as he entered. When he saw the guest, he bowed. "Nice to meet you all. Dad talked about you a lot. I'm Hugo."
"Nice to meet you, Hugo." The Russian man, Stanilov, greeted. "Your father talked about you as well. You and little Evangeline."
"Congratulations on graduating last year." Yana said. "I don't know a lot of people who could finish college so quickly."
"I just got lucky." The boy said, blushing slightly.
"Do you think Evangeline's going to be the same way?" She asked.
"Well, it'll be good if she does, but I think it's better if she took her time. You know, to grow up like everyone else." He looked at the blonde girl in the kitchen, talking as her mother washed the cooking appliances. "The only reason I rushed is because I was offered the job I've been wanting. I wanted to take it as soon as possible so I ended up finishing college in just two years."
"One and a half." His father corrected.
"In just one and a half year." He chuckled sheepishly.
"I'm impressed." The Russian man smiled.
"And I'm hungry!!" Niara whined. "Come on! Let's all eat!!"
"Okay, Niara." The blonde woman finally came back to them, leading the mini version of herself there. "Come, Eva. You can sit next to Niara and talk."
"Okay!" She climbed up her seat and smiled at the girl. "Hi there. I'm Evangeline."
"Hi hi! I'm Niara!" She replied. "And wow, you're name is long."
"And yours is short."
"I'm gonna call you Evie for short."
"Why not just Eva? That's what everyone calls me."
"Well then, I'm special. I'm gonna call you Evie!"
"Okay! Then I'm calling you Nia!"
"But my name's already short."
"You made a nickname for me, so I made one for you. That's how friendships work, right?"
The two continued to chat as they eat, leaving the adults to watch just how pure they are. When they finished eating, the two went to Eva's room to play, and the rest began to talk about their own thing.
"Living based on primitive tech is quite bold of you in this day and age, Stanny." Eric began.
"Well, what can I say? When you're not that good at anything but farming, you might as well make the most of that." Stanilov shrugged.
"Yes, but you live in the snowy regions, don't you?" Karen asked worriedly. "Could crops even grow that well there? I know you have the dome Yuusuke gave you, but..."
"It's fine. The only problem we've ever faced when it comes to food is just that meat is rather hard to get." Yana explained. "That's when Stanilov goes into his 'hunting mode'."
"Does Niara have problems surviving out there?" Hugo asked, casting a glance at the younger children.
"Not at all." Stanilov chuckled. "She actually loves the snow and ice. Might as well call her the queen of it!"
"I can't see her casting spells or singing in musicals though, so I'll pass on that." The blonde boy joked.
"I don't get it."
"Nevermind."
~~~~~
"Bye-bye! Hope we'll see each other again, Nia!"
"You too, Evie! See you some time!"
After seeing the Levanovs off that night, Karen lifted Eva up in her arms and took her inside. The younger blonde didn't complain as she was getting sleepy. Then Eric jabbed his son's side with his elbow.
"Ow... What was that for?"
"You should learn to take care of Eva all by yourself. She really wants to go with you to Japan."
"Wha... You mean you and mom aren't?"
"Sorry Hugo. We discussed it and reached a decision yesterday. We're going to leave you in Uzaki Yuusuke's care. He's an old friend of ours so you'll be safe with him."
"What do you mean 'safe'? What are you going to do?"
"Just trust me. It may be your job as a certified genius to use that brain to help others, but for sure, above anything, your job as an older brother is to protect Eva. She's young so she won't remember us after the years had passed. If we don't make it, I'd like for it to stay that way."
"'If you don't make it'...? I... I really don't understand..."
"You don't have to. Not yet anyway. Just promise us that you'll both stay safe."
"... I promise, dad."
