Swara as a student
"I have known Swara as Kavya's friend when they both were in their first year. They both used to hang out with us to escape from the ragging", started Dheeraj going back to those happy days.
Flashback:
"Dheer, where are you? We are in trouble", came in Kavya's scared voice into the phone call.
"Now what did you do? Didn't I tell you to come to the management block right after your classes?", shouted Dheeraj in frustration as his sister always creates some or the other problem.
"Hello brother, for your kind information, today is my first day in this college and how am I supposed to find where is the management block in this huge campus. So, I just asked the first person I found near my block and unfortunately he is one the seniors", replied Kavya with the same audacity.
"Fine give him the mobile, I will speak to him", said Dheeraj not in a mood to argue with her and Kavya obliged. Kavya didn't hear what Dheeraj told the senior but he left them with a smile showing them the directions to their desired destination.
"Looks like your brother has got good network", said another girl walking beside Kavya.
"Ha Swara, now we don't need to worry about ragging anymore. My brother will take care", replied Kavya with pride evident in her voice for which Swara smiled in agreement.
As they reached the management block, they were mesmerized by the huge building surrounded by a luscious garden which was filled with students few studying or doing their assignments while few students like Dheeraj and his friends were gossiping and passing their time. To one side there is basketball court and to the other side there was a food court with delicious aroma reaching their nose making them hungry instantly.
"Kavya", called Dheeraj waving his hand at his sister asking her to join them.
"Dheer, this is my friend Swara and Swara, this is my brother Dheeraj", introduced Kavya.
"Hi sir", wished Swara not knowing what to call him as he is two years senior to her.
"No formalities Swara, you can call me Dheeraj and this is my friend Sahil", intoduced Dheeraj and Sahil waved to the girls which they reciprocated.
"This is so nice, why don't we have such nice garden in front of our building", exclaimed Kavya looking around.
"Because MBA guys pay more than us, so they have every privilege starting from gym to Non veg", replied Sahil with a chuckle.
"And that's the reason we spend most of the time in their block rather than in ours", joined Dheeraj jumping from the roof he was sitting on.
"Come, let's take you girls around the college", said Dheeraj giving the girls a college tour showing them all those places where to hide from the security when they bunk their classes.
Being first year students, Swara and Kavya were a bit hesitant to miss their lectures but after one semester, they too started bunking few boring classes and hanging out with Dheeraj and Sahil. As days passed by, the four of them became so close that most of them thought Swara and Kavya were also from the third year. Soon it was final year and campus placements started for Dheeraj and Sahil but none were serious about their career increasing the tension for Swara and Kavya. Somehow, Sahil got a job offer in one Indian company but Dheeraj was still passing his time.
The girls tried a lot to make him understand the importance of having a job and a serious career but he was too addicted to alcohol and enjoyment that he was not ready to realise what he was losing.
"When you have a dad who would give you unlimited pocket money, what's the point of working hard?", is Dheeraj's constant dialogue and his this attitude is what pissed off Swara.
"And one day he will stop doing that when he gets to know that his son is useless...what will you do then?", shouted Swara.
"We will think about it then. Why are you worrying so much Swara. Just chill", said Dheeraj taking a huge puff from his cigarette.
Swara pulled it from his mouth and threw it on the floor.
"The day you leave these, it will be good for us", saying which Swara left from there followed by Kavya.
"She is shouting as if she is your girlfriend", chuckled Sahil handing Dheeraj his cigar.
"Mad girl", smiled Dheeraj looking at her retreating figure.
Kavya and Swara couldn't stay angry with the boys for long as they promised to take them to the prom arranged on the farewell of the fourth years where only third and fourth years were allowed while Swara and Kavya were still in the second year of their graduation and they wanted to go and experience it.
On the night of the farewell,
"These girls are too much, we shouldn't have agreed to take them along. They are wasting all our time", said Dheeraj getting irritated on waiting for about 30 minutes.
"Relax bro, it is good to go with them rather than going alone to the prom and get surrounded by all those chipkalis of our class", said Sahil sitting on the bonnet of the car and whipping his cigar.
"Sorry sorry", came in the girls adjusting their hair and dress.
"Finally, Sahil start the car", saying which Dheeraj put down the cigarette bud he was smoking and budged it off.
The girls got into the back seat and Sahil started the car with Dheeraj sitting beside him.
"Dheeraj, can't you stay even for thirty minutes without smoking? How many times should we tell you that it's not good for your health", scolded Swara getting irritated with that smell.
"And how many times should I tell you not to lecture me. If it is bothering you so much, open the window", said Dheeraj looking out of his window. He don't like anyone bossing around him.
"Kavya, I feel we really did a mistake agreeing to join them", said Swara turning her face away with her hands across her chest.
"Sahil stop the car, let's leave them behind. I am in no mood...", but before he could continue Kavya shouted.
"Stop it you both, why do you have to fight always? Swara if it is not for them, you very well know our parents wouldn't have sent us out so late in the night. So, please don't spoil your mood today. We will enjoy to the core", said Kavya all excited for her first experience of going out late at night. Looking at her face, all the three of them in the car smiled and shook their heads.
Upon reaching their college, all the four went in only to find it fully decorated for the farewell of the final years. Upon reaching the dance floor,
"Swara, come with me. Kavya, you can join Sahil and don't wander around. Stay with us", ordered Dheeraj getting into possessive brother mode.
Kavya nodded enthusiastically looking around as she has never visited any pubs or night parties because of her strict parents and the same is the case with Swara too. They went onto the dance floor holding the boys hands and started swaying their bodies to the music. Dheeraj was smiling looking at his sister dancing like a crazy girl and he came into this world when he felt a hand on his shoulder.
"Come on let's dance", Swara pulled him along with her and in that moonlight, Dheeraj observed Swara clearly for the first time. In her black sleeveless long frock with her hair tied into a bun leaving long curls in front, she looked nothing less than a princess and he wondered how he didn't notice this beauty since two years. Never in all these years, he felt their closeness affecting him as much as it is this night. He didn't want the music to stop nor wanted to stop dancing because then she would get away from his hands. After some time, the partners were exchanged and Swara was dancing with some other senior.
Though Dheeraj's feet were moving to the beat but his eyes and concentration were totally on Swara, her smile doing wonders to his heart and the reason for it being someone else was making him burn in jealousy. This new feeling was alien to him and he took it to be as his possessiveness towards both the girls.
After dancing to their fullest, they went to the food stalls to have something as they felt hungry and the girls clicked too many selfies forcing the boys as well. Amongst all, the one picture that Dheeraj adored was of his and Swara's.
That night changed Dheeraj's perspective and behavior towards Swara surprising everyone as he was agreeing to whatever she says and surprisingly Dheeraj promised to reduce his consumption of alcohol and also started using nicotine making Swara very happy and this didn't go unnoticed by his friends and sister.
One such day, Kavya confronted him.
"What's going on between you and Swara?", asked Kavya.
"Nothing", replied Dheeraj trying to sound as genuine as possible.
"I can see it Dheer, are you in love with her?", asked Kavya crossing her hands across her chest.
"Well, I don't know whether it is right to fall for my sister's best friend but at this moment if anything seemed right then Swara being with me feels the most appropriate thing. I feel like doing anything just to see her smile", replied Dheeraj finding no point in hiding it from Kavya.
"Aww, finally my brother is in love. I am so happy that my best friend would be my bhabhi. What about Swara, she loves you too right?", asked Kavya looking at him hopefully.
"I just know that she cares for me but I am not sure whether she loves me or not but I wish she does...I can't imagine my life without her anymore", replied Dheeraj and Kavya could see the seriousness in his eyes.
"Who will reject my sweet brother?", she said kissing his cheek.
With Kavya's insistence, Dheeraj decided to tell his feelings to Swara and after a lot of practice, he finalized to propose her in a call not having the strength to face her if she rejects him just in case.
"Hi Swara", said Dheeraj trying not to sound nervous.
"Hey Dheer, what's up?", chirped Swara casually.
"Nothing much, how was your day?", asked Dheeraj thinking as of how to start what he wanted to tell her.
"Just the usual boring classes except for the basketball match. The MBA guys are rocking. I am sure this time they would brag a cup for our university in the coming sports fest", replied Swara in an enthusiastic tone.
"From when she started taking interest in basketball, she loves cricket right?", thought Dheeraj but brushing it away thinking about the mission in his hand.
"Swara, I want to tell you something since long but I am afraid how you would react to it. To be frank I am expecting a positive reply", said Dheeraj holding his breath.
Taking her time, Swara replied.
"Ya Dheeraj, I am listening", came in Swara's voice like a whisper as if she understood what is coming.
"Swara, I don't say it is love at first sight because when I saw you for the first time, you were just a friend of my sister and nothing else. But slowly the time we spent together, your care, your scoldings, your cute expressions when I do something you don't like made me want to have you all to myself for this lifetime. Will you be my girlfriend?", Dheeraj blurted out his feelings closing his eyes. He expected her to shout at him but instead all he got was silence.
"Swara, are you there?", asked Dheeraj.
"Dheeraj, you know about my parents, right? They don't like all these", said Swara trying to reason out.
"Leave about them Swara, tell me what do you feel about me?", asked Dheeraj with his heart beating fast.
"Dheeraj, may be I would have said yes if you would have been more responsible and serious about your career unlike living on your dad's money even after one year of your graduation. You are understanding me right, it's not that I don't like you but I can't imagine you as my life partner because of your reckless behavior", replied Swara choosing her words carefully knowing Dheeraj's agressive and stubborn nature.
"So, if I get a job, then you would say yes to me?", asked Dheeraj hopefully.
"Maybe", replied Swara.
"Fine then, from tomorrow I will be on that work", saying which Dheeraj disconnected the call happily.
