Chapter 16: The Ninja And The Ronin

Whoo!! I missed this! Who else missed this? Also, with a new chapter comes a new cover! Yay! I also changed the book's description.

And since I haven't updated in almost a year, have a chapter that's 2300 words long!

《¤》

Kyle grunted when he collided with the wall that surrounded the monastery after the brown clad man kicked him on the chest. He rubbed the back of his head where it hit the wall and decided to study the scene before he did anything.

Leyla, Ember and Frost were fighting Ronin weapon-to-weapon. While Crystal and Raven were fighting the Brown Ninja. Jason and Jia mostly stayed out of the fight because of their lack of fighting ability, but they still helped out whenever they could.

The Fire descendant growled under his breath at the fact that the intruders were actually good at fighting. That the so-called 'Brown Ninja' and 'Ronin' worked well together. Every so often the two would switch places, or one would duck while the other blocked the teens' attacks. It was as if they knew what the other was thinking without saying a word. With their skills, the two of them could take out a large group.

And yet...

It didn't seem like their attackers were trying to hurt them.

Kyle was snapped out of his thoughts when he heard a yelp and a thud next to him. He turned his head and saw that Frost had also met the wall.

"I can't believe a robot got outmatched by a human." Kyle said. Frost huffed as he picked up his dagger from where he dropped it when he hit the wall.

"Same goes to you," the male android shot back. "Aren't you supposed to be an expert in martial arts?"

"Tsk." Kyle scoffed before standing up. "Things like you wouldn't understand. All you droids ever know are numbers and statistics."

The blue eyed android tightened his hold on his dagger. "What is your problem?!" He demanded. "Ever since we met, all you ever did was insult me and my sister. I do not recall ever doing something mean to you, so the possibility of you being mad at us was less than 0.625%."

"Exactly why I hate you!" Kyle snapped, turning to the younger descendant with a scowl. "All you droids ever think about is numbers this, and possibilities that. You never even think about anything else!"

"That is not true," Frost protested. "Just because I am a droid, does not mean I don't consider the feelings of others around me. I do not even care about possibilities that much!"

Kyle's jaw tightened and he swung his katana at Frost, but the male android was able to block it with his dagger.

"You androids should have never been invented in the first place!" Kyle hissed as he swung his katana again. Frost ducked under the blade and raised his arms to block an incoming kick.

"Ngh! Why?! Why do you hate me so much?!" Frost questioned, blocking Kyle's attacks but not retaliating.

"Why?!" Kyle swung his blade again, which was then blocked by Frost's dagger. Taking this split moment of distraction, the brunet kicked the android's abdomen, which made the blonde descendant stumble back.

Kyle breathed heavily as he glared down at Frost, who was on the ground with an arm raised defensively. The Fire descendant's clenched fist tightened.

"Because of you droids," Kyle began, his voice wavering with emotion. "I lost my best friend."

The Ice descendant kept a straight face. Whether he felt nothing or was just hiding it, Kyle didn't care. He raised his weapon over his head, a dangerous glint in his eyes.

But before he could make a move, Frost suddenly stood up and pushed him away. Kyle was able to keep his balance and was about to attack again, but he saw Frost on the ground with a thick, black net wrapped around him.

Frost caught his surprised look and gave him a hard stare in return. But the blue eyed android wasn't able to say anything else as the net suddenly shocked him. He yelped as the electricity messed up with his circuits.

Kyle turned back to where the intruders were, just as he was caught in another net. It shocked him once, and Kyle bit back a pained shout.

He heard clapping, and looked up to see the Ronin holding up a hand with the Brown Ninja slow clapping beside him. The amber eyed descendant noted the small device attached to the Ronin's arm, which was probably where the nets came from.

"Great job, kiddos! Arguing with each other in the middle of a fight." The Brown Ninja said, sarcasm lacing his voice. "Keep that up and you'll end up getting the whole world destroyed!"

"S-shut up!" Ember shouted. Kyle only then noticed the other descendants captured in separate nets all around the courtyard. And from the pained looks on most of their faces, Kyle could tell that he and Frost weren't the only ones who got shocked.

"Sorry, sweetheart," Ronin said as he lowered his hand. "But if you kids are gonna be the next heroes of Ninjago, you'll need to do better than that." Although his face was mostly covered with his mask and eyepatch, Kyle could tell that the armored man was smirking.

And at that moment, Kyle knew that there was something fishy about the Ronin and the Brown Ninja.

《¤》

Leyla was struggling under the net. In her mind, she kept on telling herself that she had to be strong to save her parents. If she couldn't defeat these two men, then she won't be strong enough to save the world. And if she can't save the world, she'll continue to be the weakling.

Leyla gowled again. She was starting to feel useless. There must be something she could do!

The Energy descendant thought back to a few days ago when she was training with her father. She remembered the frustration she felt when she didn't land a single blow. She remembers the extreme emotions she felt that led to her accidentally hitting her father with a small energy blast.

Oh, if only she could use her powers at will. But she seems to only be able to use it when she feels extreme emotions.

Emotions. Control. That's it!

Leyla suddenly remembers what her father had told her before they spotted those shadow creatures.

If you can control yourself, you can control your power.

Leyla thought it was a long shot, but she was willing to try anything.

But before she could do anything, the monastery doors swung open. Standing at the doorway was a brown haired young woman wearing a dark gray hoodie. She was in a defensive stance, a snake themed dagger held tight in one hand. A faded, brown cloak was wrapped around her shoulders, covering most of her back and torso.

But what really caught Leyla's eyes was the girl's skin and eyes. Shiny white and purple scales covered most of her face and hands, and her slitted red eyes were scanning the courtyard.

The girl froze when her eyes landed on the two masked men, the two freezing as well. The three of them stared at each other like children caught doing something they weren't supposed to do.

The woman suddenly relaxed and groaned. "Oh, for the love of-" she took a deep breath as she put her dagger in its hilt that was strapped on her side. She then looked at the two men with irritation. "What in Ninjago are the two of you doing here?"

The Ronin and the Brown Ninja shared a glance before looking back at the woman. That was when she noticed the descendants caught in separate nets, and she gave the two men a glare as her hand went to touch her dagger's hilt.

"Release them, you idiots." Was all the woman said, a dangerous glint in her red eyes. The two men glanced at each other before Ronin pressed something on his wrist and the nets all retracted into small discs.

The descendants quickly got to their feet and huddled together (Kyle and Frost staying as far away from each other as possible), their weapons drawn and ready. The woman strode over to the two men and smacked them both upside the head.

"Ow! What's that for?!" The Brown Ninja demanded.

"You have five seconds to explain why you two idiots attacked these kids." The red eyed woman threatened. But since she was shorter than the two men, it wasn't really threatening.

"We also wanna know!" Jia exclaimed from behind her brother.

The other descendants nodded and Crystal pulled out the circular device and pressed the button. A holographic image of a brown clad ninja and a man in armor similar to Ronin was projected. The picture then changed into what the two persons looked like underneath their masks.

The Brown Ninja had brown hair, brown eyes and a cocky grin. Ronin had long hair brown hair, dark brown eyes and a bit of stubble. The words 'Allies: Dareth The Brown Ninja and Ronin the Mercenary' were underneath the images.

"The two of you are supposed to be the Ninjas' allies, and I believe that includes their children." Crystal stated. "So why did you attack us? Do you not know that we are children of the Ninjas?"

Ronin chuckled. "Oh, trust me, sweetheart, we know who you are. There's no mistaking those faces." He said. The Brown Ninja gave a nod.

"And those two in the picture? Yeah, that's not us." The brown clad man said.

"Huh?!"

The two men reached up and removed their masks, and in Ronin's case, his straw hat and eyepatch as well. The Brown Ninja was a fair skinned, young man with dark brown hair and chocolate eyes. A forced, yet kind smile on his face. He looked to be in his early twenties.

Ronin also looked to be around that age. He was a brown haired man with dark green eyes and a small scar on his left cheek. He was smirking, a playful glint in his eyes.

"Nice to finally meet you, kids. The name's Brian, only son of Ronin." The armor clad male said before gesturing to his companion. "And this is Darren, Dareth's oldest son."

"A pleasure," Darren said as he did a mock bow.

"It would be a pleasure if you'd tell us why you attacked us!" Ember said angrily.

Brian put his hands on his hips, his smirk never leaving his face. "Blame that old Cyrus. He called us yesterday, telling us to help you learn Spinjitzu." He said before nudging Darren. "And what better way for you to learn than a hands-on lesson, am I right?"

The descendants only gave him a glare. The red eyed woman scoffed and said, "You're lucky these kids can't control their powers yet, or else you'll both be dead."

Brian scoffed and bent down to her height. "Well, excuse me, Miss I'm-So-Good-Cuz-I'm-Part-Snake, but we won't be doing this if the pay isn't good. We don't do this for free, remember?" He straightened hinself and crossed his arms. "You haven't even introduced yourself to them. Such bad manners."

The descendants looked expectantly at the red eyed woman, waiting for her to introduce herself. She scoffed at Brian's words.

"My name is Ana, and I came here with a message from the Serpentine King." She said, getting straight to the point. The young descendants exchanged glances.

Brian noticed the descendants' confusion. "Check the disk, kid." He said helpfully, gesturing to the device in Crystal's hand.

With another push of the button, the holographic image changed into what looked to be four humanoid snakes. A green, four-eyed snake, a red snake with large fangs and a short, black and gray snake stood on both side of a tall blue and yellow snake. Each of them were holding snake staffs and the blue snake had a golden crown on his head. The words 'The Serpentine Leaders' were below the image.

"Three days ago, your parents were attacked and taken by creatures known as Shadow Warriors." Ana began, ignoring the descendants' sad looks. "The Serpentine leaders and I think that whoever is controlling those Shadows wanted your parents' powers."

"But," Jia interrupted. "Mr. Borg told us that their powers were passed down to us."

Brian scoffed and crossed his arms. "Probably didn't know that the Ninjas have kids."

"We're not yet sure of the enemy's motives or what they know, but the Serpentine leaders have sent scouts to the Dark Island to investigate." Ana explained. "I've been sent here to inform you kids that you have the Serpentine's support."

"You're gonna help us find our parents?" Leyla asked hopefully.

"That's our plan, yes," Ana said with a nod. "I'm also here to offer my assistence in training you kids to control your powers."

"You say that, but we don't know where to start." Jason said.

"Here's an idea."

All eyes turned to Darren who was now across the courtyard, he had been silent the entire conversation that no one noticed him move. The brown clad ninja was standing beside a small dragon statue with his hands on his hips and a smile on his face.

"How about we start from the beginning?" Darren flipped the statue to reveal a small button underneath it. He pressed it and the quiet whir of machinery filled the monastery.

Some parts of the floor began to rise and the descendants moved to avoid it. Within the span of a minute, a whole training course had risen from the ground. The descendants stared is awe, talking excitedly.

They heard a sharp whistle and they turned to the sound to see Brian, Ana and Darren standing in front of the large dragon statue in the middle. Brian was holding a bō staff and his straw hat was on his head.

"If you're amazed by this old trick, then you're not prepared for what's about to come." The armor clad man said with a smirk. "This is only the beginning."
