It's just a spider
Imagine- There is a spider in the house, which Ichabod and Katrina do not like, and Isabella has to take it out herself.
October 30th, that was today's date. The day before Halloween, or as they called it All Hallows Eve. But Halloween was the more common term. And on this day, it was pretty cold and windy outside. But then again, it was New York, so usually around October, it was always cold. Especially at night.
There weren't very many people walking around the streets of New York at this time of night, since it was pretty late, and that included the Crane family.
Speaking of the Cranes, Ichabod didn't necessarily love Halloween, but he didn't mind it either. You would think that Ichabod, being a constable and all, would really show how tough and strong he was. And he was, very much so. But sometimes, his unmanly traits would show way more than intended to. For example, he did not like the sight of blood. I mean, he detested and despised it. And when he sees blood, even if its just a tiny bit, he will most likely either vomit, or faint.
Yeah, that is very manly...
On top of that, one of Ichabod's greatest fears, was spiders. Didn't matter if it was a little garden spider, or a tarantula, spiders scared the absolute FUCK out of him. Katrina, his wife, wasn't too fond of spiders either. But she wasn't as afraid of them as her husband was. Now their daughter, Isabella, who was the sweetest and kindest young lady, she did not mind spiders. At all.
Some girls at her school thought she was very weird for liking spiders, bugs, and all the other creepy crawlies. Most girls didn't like those kinds of organisms, but Isabella wasn't like most girls. She was different, eccentric, and she didn't care. She liked being different.
She found spiders, and other creatures of that nature very interesting, always wondering how such specimens could walk, move, and just all around function in the world. She totally got the curiosity trait from her father, as her father was a very curious man.
Ichabod was sitting on the sofa, Katrina in one of the love seats and they were both reading a book. Isabella was in her room, taking a nap and dreaming about Halloween day. She couldn't wait to celebrate the holiday of witches, black cats, and vampires... even though vampires didn't exist. Or So they thought.
All of a sudden, Isabella woke up with a gasp when she heard two shrieks coming from downstairs. She quickly propped herself on her elbow, groaning as she rubbed the sleep from her eyes before running a hand through her hair and she got out of bed. She knew it was her parents, but what the hell were they freaking out about?
Isabella rushed downstairs, her hand holding onto the rail so she wouldn't trip or fall and when she got to about the 3 step from the floor, her blue eyes scanned the room. Ichabod was standing on a chair in the corner of the room, his hands holding onto the wall. Katrina was sitting on the loveseat, hugging both knees to her chest, and both of their eyes were wide.
"What is going on? Are you two alright? Why did you scream?" Isabella asked, all these different questions running through her head. Ichabod, too stunned to speak, pointed his index finger towards the floor and Isabella followed his finger. On the ground, was a tarantula, slowly crawling across the black furry rug. Isabella rolled her eyes before placing her hands on her hips. She wasn't angry, she knew how afraid her father was of spiders. But she still couldn't help but feel annoyed.
"Really, daddy? Its just a tarantula, it's not going to kill you." She said as she slowly walked down the rest of the stairs, making her way to the spider with her hands still on her hips.
"Kill it! No No, Stun it! It will kill you!" Ichabod cried out and Isabella stopped walking, shooting him a glare before slapping her palm against her forehead, shaking her head. This was the 1800s, Isabella had never heard of a tarantula killing a human, let alone hurting one. They make look intimidating, but to her, they were just little fuzzballs who would never hurt a fly. The only reason spiders bite humans, like with any other animal, is if they feel threatened or scared.
"Relax, daddy. Your daughter is going to take care of this for you... big baby." She mumbled the last part but both of her parents heard it and Katrina covered her mouth, trying not to laugh. Ichabod looked at his wife with wide eyes, mouth slightly agape.
"Don't encourage that darling! I'm not a big baby! Just... don't like those hairy beasts." He looked away as his whole face turned red, feeling so embarrassed and ashamed for being afraid of something so small. But you can't blame him too much. Spiders can be very creepy looking.
As Isabella looked at her father, she couldn't help but giggle. Hairy beasts? Really? I mean, they are hairy, but beasts? Eh, not really.
"Beasts? Daddy, they are not yetis. Just spiders." She said before looking down at the spider, slowly lowering her hand to its level. Being attracted to her warmth, the spider slowly crawled into her hand, and Isabella smiled, watching the spider crawl onto her hand, and feeling its soft and fuzzy legs against her skin.
"Hi, buddy... don't be afraid. I won't let them hurt you. Plus, I think my daddy is too afraid of you. He's a wuss." She tried so hard not to laugh out loud so as not to startle the spider. She knew the spider could not understand what she was saying, but she pretended it did. Katrina was holding back laughter and Ichabod's jaw dropped, his eyes unable to stop watching his daughter. How could she say such things about her own father? But he had to admit, she was right. He wished he wasn't such a wuss, but knowing what he went through childhood, again, you can't blame him.
"If it bites you, it's your fault darling!" Katrina said through giggles and Isabella glanced at her mother, not being able to hold back a small chuckle. "Mama, I know what I am doing."
She brought her other hand under the hand that was holding the tarantula and she carefully stood up, making sure to be slow with her movements. As Isabella walked with the spider in her hands, Ichabod and Katrina shared a glance, Ichabod stepping down from the chair and walking towards his wife. He took his hands in hers and helped her stand up before they followed Isabella. They watched her open the front door, and walked into the front yard, the cool breeze hitting her skin and making the hairs on her arms stand up. Isabella knew that tarantulas loved heat, so she hoped that when she released the spider, it would try to find heat as soon as possible.
Isabella looked around and found a big tree, so she walked towards it and carefully placed the spider on the trunk of the tree. She watched the spider crawl up the tree, finding shelter in the tree's burrow. It crawled inside and turned around to face her. As if saying thank you, the spider lifted its front legs up, waving them (I know its not possible but I thought it would be cute to add this in) before lowering its legs and crawling backwards, letting the darkness of the burrow shelter itself even more. Isabella smiled before turning around and saw both of her parents standing in the doorway, Ichabod's arm wrapped around his wife's shoulders, looking shocked.
Isabella dusted her hands off before walking inside, past them and making her way to the bathroom. She washed her hands with soap and water before drying them off, then walked into the living room, where her parents walked towards her, Ichabod sitting down on the sofa. Katrina took Isabella's hand in hers and the two girls sat down, with Isabella in between her parents.
"How did you... how did you not freak out?" Ichabod asked, still in shock of what just occurred. Isabella shrugged her shoulders, giving him a soft smile.
"I just... like spiders, I guess. Ever since I was little, they never really scared me. I have always found them fascinating." She said and Katrina gently squeezed her hand before kissing her temple.
"And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, honey. Ever since you were little, you have always been different. And that's a good thing." Ichabod nodded his head in agreement, wrapping an arm around Isabella's shoulders and kissing her forehead.
"Indeed, my little cardinal. Also... do you really think I am a wuss? I mean, I know I am but..." he trailed off and Isabella giggled, shaking her head, before wrapping her arms around his waist and nuzzled her head against his shoulder.
"I said that to see how you would react, daddy. To be honest, you can be quite squeamish. But you are also strong, determined, sweet, and you are the best father I could have ever asked for. I couldn't have asked for better parents." She said and her parents smiled warmly, their hearts filled with so much love and adoration. Ichabod held his daughter close as Katrina leaned against Isabella, her thumb running over her daughter's knuckles.
"And you are our little eccentric girl. Happy Hallows eve, my love" Ichabod whispered and Isabella let out a sigh of content.
"Happy hallows eve."
