Part 24
Silence engulfed the room as you felt a ringing in your ears. You turned away and stared at the table in front of you. Could you really do this? Could you really tell them the only thing about you that they didn't know? The only thing that would incriminate you to them. You had been terrified to tell them, hell you still were, but it seemed now you had no choice. You felt tears well up in your eyes as you turned to look at Suga. He was studying you closely, probably wondering if you would agree to tell them. You pursed your lips and looked to him for reassurance.
"Y/N... Suga said, drawing you to meet his dark, penetrating gaze. "Whatever it is, you can tell us." Those simple words were all the reassurance you needed. You took a deep breath and lifted your chin to begin your story.
"After I ran from Luke about two years ago, it was really difficult finding a job. You would think finding a job with a degree in computer science would be easy, but it turns out people only want to hire you if you're white and male. So, when I finally got a job as a proofreader for a newspaper, I thought it was a miracle. It was fine for a while, but it became tedious since my skill level went far beyond editing articles. So, I started to do freelance work of my own. Creating programs for myself, like the virus I put on my laptop that would wipe the hard drive." You glanced at Jimin, who lifted his chin. "It didn't take long for the higher-ups in the company to notice my skill with a computer. So, they employed me to do some work on the side for double my salary."
You paused and took a deep breath.
"My work for the main boss varied, but most of them were centered around one thing. Digging up dirt on The Bulletproof Gang, on you guys." You took a breath as the boys' faces twisted in confusion. You looked down and clenched your fists. "They asked me to dig up everything I could about your gang. About the inner-workings, about the drug cartels, all of it." You finished, swallowing hard. The room was silent for what felt like a lifetime, but was probably only a few minutes. You felt the need to say something to fill that space, so you started rambling.
"That's how I knew so much about you when you first took me. That's how I knew who everyone was and how I knew your real names." You paused, remembering the conversation you'd had earlier with Suga. "I didn't think I'd ever meet you in person, so I took the job without really hesitating. I mean, extra money for just digging up dirt on some random drug lords I would never have to deal with? It seemed like a dream come true. And at that point, I was pretty desperate and—"
Jungkook slammed his hand on the table, making you jump.
"And you didn't think to tell us about any of that until now?" You flinched his outburst. "What the hell, Y/N? You've known this whole time that we had an enemy outside, and you didn't think to tell us? Have you been working for them this whole time?" You closed your eyes, feeling the fear bubble up in your chest.
"Jungkook!" Suga's demanding, strong voice echoed over the room, shutting everyone up. "Let her finish." He ground out. You exhaled sharply, the unexpected request catching you off-guard. Jungkook's reaction had been exactly what you had been expecting, but Suga's defense threw you for a loop. You dared not look at Suga's face and you spoke again.
"I didn't think anything of it." You whispered. "I only thought they wanted the information to try to expose you to the paper or something, I don't know. I never thought they could use the information for anything else. They never told me what they were doing with the information I gave them." You said, desperately trying to sound sincere. "All I know is that I couldn't tell you what my real job was. I couldn't because you would react exactly like you are now." You looked up and glared at Jungkook. "Despite what you probably believe, I didn't set you up or anything like that. I was just trying to protect myself." Jungkook's expression softened and you looked off to the side. "I knew that if I told you at first, you would have killed me. And as time went on, that risk only continued to grow so... I kept the secret to protect myself."
The room fell silent for a few beats. You dared not look at any of the boys as you stared down at the table, wringing your hands in your lap. You couldn't decipher the mood in the room. Was it bad? Were they angry? Was this the end for you?
"Who was the man you worked for?" Suga broke the silent, leaning forward and putting the palms of his hands on the table. "What did he look like? What was his name?"
"I never met him." You said, shaking your head. "But his name was..." You scratched your head, trying to remember. "Aaron Dearth."
Almost instantly after the words escaped your mouth, the tension skyrocketed. You weren't even looking, but you could feel the expressions of every man in the room darken and harden. You looked up curiously, not sure why that name had affected them so much. You turned to look at each man to see varying degrees of disbelief, horror, anger, and in some cases, fear. You pinched your eyebrows together in confusion.
"Does that mean something to you? Do you know him?" You asked, peering around. Suga sighed and rubbed his temples before looking up at you. You met his eyes and tried to keep your cheeks from heating up.
"Aaron Dearth is a pseudonym. That man's real name is Alistair DesMoines." Suga stated through thinly veiled anger. Your jaw dropped at his revelation.
The crimson suit man, the man who had held a gun to your head. The man who you had been tasked to bait. That man had been the man you had been working for at the newspaper. You had been feeding him information for almost two years about anything and everything he asked of you. He had been using you for all that time.
It was because of him that all of this had happened. Because of him that you and your father ended up a target, and his fault that you had almost been killed on several occasions. All the pieces suddenly fit together, and you exhaled hard, feeling very out of breath.
"Wait, wait, wait. Hold on one second." This from Jin who held a hand out. He looked up and around in disbelief. "Are you kidding me? Alistair DesMoines was posing as a CEO of a newspaper company? And then he just happens to recruit the same girl we just happen to take away? Does anyone else think that this is way too perfect?"
The room went quiet as Jin's words marinated. Jin was right, this did seem like too much of a coincidence. You couldn't understand how this could have been set up so perfect in Alistair's favor. The fact that the police had somehow been tipped off at the same time that Alistair had attacked the gang was too much of a coincidence not to be related. It didn't make any sense.
"Are we sure that there's no way Alistair was working with the police?" You asked.
"No, no way. Alistair is a scumbag, but he wouldn't risk going to the police. His list of crimes is too long to keep track of, they would arrest him in a second." J-Hope said, waving his arm. J-Hope would know the most about the police, since he was their police force link. You trusted his instinct on this.
"Not Alistair..." Jimin looked up, his eyes widening. "Aaron. The police have no idea that they're the same person. It's the only explanation." Your eyes widened as Jimin stood up, realization plain on his face.
"It's the only thing that makes sense. Alistair, or Aaron, has been feeding the cops information about us that he got from Y/N. That's how they knew all about us and how they were able to be ahead of us twice." A hush fell over the room as everyone watched Jimin in anticipation. "Not only that, but Alistair probably knew about Y/N's tracking devices since he's working with the police. He's behind all of this."
You felt your cheeks redden as you looked back down, away from the other's scrutinizing gazes. Everything Jimin was saying made sense. And because it was probably true, that meant that all of this was your fault. Every bad thing that had happened to the gang had been your fault to some extent. At one point in your life, you may have wanted this. You may have wanted to be their downfall, but not now. Not anymore. Not when you were in love with the gang's leader. Not when Min Yoongi held your heart in his bare hands.
You glanced over at him to see him looking at the wall thoughtfully. He looked back over at you and your cheeks flushed at the sudden eye contact. Suga's hard expression softened as he looked at you. You didn't even need to say anything, but he knew what you were thinking. You swallowed hard and looked away. It was uncanny, his effect on you. you used to be so strong when it came to his effect. You used to spit and laugh in his face. That girl was gone now. The strong, defiant girl who both wanted to escape, but also wanted to keep her pride was gone. Because now she was emotionally attached to everyone in this room.
"Y/N..." Suga husky voice rumbled through the room, making you grit your teeth. You forced your eyes to meet his and were met with an undecipherable expression. "This isn't your fault." Your eyes widened at his statement.
"Like hell it isn't." Jungkook snapped, drawing your attention to his side of the table. "She knew this whole time. She knew why all these things were happening and she never said anything. And now we've lost all our power."
"It's not her fault." This from Jimin, still standing. He and Jungkook glared at each other. "It's not her fault. We were losing power long before she showed up. There were at least five drug runs that didn't go according to plan." Jimin's face hardened and his eyes narrowed to slits. "Or do you not remember those? I believe you were one in charge." Jimin sneered. Your eyes widened as Jungkook stood up, slamming his hands on the table.
"Are you trying to say something to me?" He snarled, glaring at Jimin. You were in utter shock. This was the first time you had ever seen the boys express any kind of anger toward each other.
"Only that you seem to be willing to blame everyone but yourself." Jimin didn't seem to be backing down as he threw it right back into Jungkook's face. You leaned back as the two men squared off against each other.
"If you haven't noticed, we are living in a shack. There's seven of us, but only like three rooms in this house. Someone is to blame for this and she's sitting right there. We never should have taken her from the police." Jungkook's eyes found yours and you flinched.
"And if we hadn't, we would have never found out that Alistair was behind all of this." Jimin put his hand out, almost as if to protect you from Jungkook's glare. Jungkook brought his attention back to Jimin, his teeth bared angrily.
"Are you that dense, Jimin? Alistair has been using her since the beginning. He knew the minute she was taken, and he hasn't stopping coming after us since. He's probably using her right now."
You gasped at his implication. The other boys started to look at you, gaging your reaction to being called out. You swallowed and tried to look anywhere but into one of their eyes. You knew Jungkook's implication was false, but it didn't stop you from getting extremely nervous. If they believed him, they could easily go straight back to keeping you in a dark room under the closet.
"If she was working for him now, why would she tell us about it?" Jimin asked, breaking the silence. You exhaled hard, grateful for Jimin's defense. You weren't sure if you could deal with this alone.
"Obviously, this was part of her entire plot. I knew she had been hiding something, and I was right!" Jungkook's hand slammed on the table again and you jumped, this time putting your hand on the back of the chair ready to sprint out of there. Jungkook's eyes held murderous intentions. Jimin stepped closer to you, definitely in a protective stance this time. Just before Jungkook could start towards you, a voice sliced through the tension.
"Enough." Suga's calm demand was enough to shut the two aggressive men right the hell up. You heard the scraping of the chair and turned to see Suga standing up. He looked down at you and you swallowed hard. He started to move toward you, his expression never wavering. There was no reassuring or softness in his gaze.
You started to cower, when you caught yourself. You had been doing enough cowering lately. There was no reason for you to be afraid. You knew you were innocent, you knew that you didn't cause this. Even if you did, it hadn't been on purpose. You were going to stand your ground. Even if it meant talking back to the man who had the ability not only to crush your life, but also your heart.
You swallowed hard as he bent towards you and placed his hand on the table, so he could lean his face mere inches from yours. He peered into your eyes and your eyes widened.
"Something has to give." He said, repeating the words you had said to him earlier. You licked your lips and fought to keep eye contact. "What exactly does that mean to you?" You were caught off-guard by the question.
"It means... it means that something—someone has to trust first. There's nothing I can say or do to prove to you I'm more loyal to you than what has already happened." You whispered softly.
"Why did you lie to us about your work?" Suga replied, his tone just as soft. You were hypnotized by his deep, penetrating stare and you couldn't lie to him.
"Because... because I knew what would happen if I told you. You were all finally looking at me like I was one of you and... I couldn't risk that going away." You whispered honestly. You swallowed as Suga tilted his head.
"If you would have told us sooner, a lot of this could have been avoided." He said, raising his eyebrows knowingly. You swallowed and sat up indignantly.
"How was I supposed to know that the person I was working also happened to be your nemesis?" You snapped, leaning your head forward. You had expected Suga to lean back at your abrupt gesture, but he didn't. He didn't budge and you found yourself leaning back instead.
"Maybe you didn't, but it does seem like too perfect a coincidence, don't you think?" He quirked an eyebrow and you sighed.
"I don't know what you want me to say." You said softly, hating how defeated you sounded. Sunga swallowed and looked down, contemplating. Then he looked back up at you with a determined look in his eyes.
"Answer me this question, that's all I ask. Look me in the eye right now and tell me that you have not been working for Alistair even since we took you." You took a deep breath and lifted your chin so you were looking him in eye.
"I haven't, Suga." You stated firmly.
"Can you prove it?" His questions made you falter, and your shoulders sagged. You paused for a few seconds, before looking away.
"No." You uttered through the lump in your throat. You closed your eyes, trying to banish the tears threatening to fall. You took a breath and opened them again as Suga's soft breath continued to fan your face.
"Something has to give." Suga repeated softly after a couple of beats. You nodded, looking up at him. You hoped that you were conveying as much sincerity as you could muster in your stare. Suga narrowed his eyes and searched your eyes for any kind of lie or deceit. You really hoped he found none. He pushed away from you and stood back up. He looked around the room, his eyes landing on Jungkook.
"I believe her." He said simply. You exhaled hard, feeling the tension from your shoulders release and sag. You slumped in the chair as silence engulfed the room.
"Suga..." Jungkook started. Suga put a hand up to silence him.
"I believe her." He repeated. "There has to another explanation for the coincidence." Jungkook looked like he was about to protest when V cut in.
"And we'll find that reason. Innocent until proven guilty, Jungkook." V said giving Jungkook a hard stare. Jungkook met his counterpart's eyes and sighed. He nodded and sat back down. You exhaled hard as Jimin and Suga both sat back down in their respective seats. The tension was still thick, but at least now you knew that at least some of them believed you.
After the meeting, you walked back to the room that Suga and you shared. You leaned against the wall, thinking deeply about what had happened in the meeting. It had been most surprising to you that Jimin would defend you so adamantly. The last time you had ever been suspected of betraying the gang, Jimin almost never forgave you. Perhaps he learned his lesson the first time.
Not only that, but Suga had also defended you. Even though all the evidence pointed against you and you had still technically been lying to them up until that moment, he believed your innocence. Perhaps you had gotten through to him more than you thought.
However, there had been something nagging you ever since you and Suga had become intimate. Something... something that was in the back of your head that didn't quite sit right with you. It was preventing you from thinking about the real things that were happening. They finally had a plan for restoring the gang's power. They were planning on restoring the gang by killing that man, by killing Alistair DesMoines. But that nagging sensation kept you from thinking about what that really meant for you and your future with the gang.
Suga walked inside and turned to look at you leaning against the wall. He sighed and walked over to you, and suddenly it clicked. The nagging sensation that had been bothering you made sense. Your jaw dropped and your eyebrows shot up in horror. You turned your head to look at Suga who was giving you a confused look.
"Y/N, are you okay?" He asked. Anger bubbled up in your chest and you bared your teeth.
"You bastard!" You shouted, lashing your hand out. You slapped him hard across the cheek and his head whipped to the side. He turned back to face you, anger written across his face.
"What the hell, Y/N." He snarled.
"I can't believe you did this to me!" You shouted again. Suga gave you an incredulous look.
"What the hell are you talking about?" He growled.
"You came inside me, bastard!" You shouted again. Suga's anger suddenly turned into confusion.
"You're upset because we had sex? Pretty sure that was a mutual agreement. It takes two to have an experience like that." He cracked a smile, but you found nothing funny about the situation.
"Yeah maybe, but itonly takes one to wear a condom." You hissed, watching as all the color drained from Suga's face.
