Part 18

"I told you, I don't know anything." Your voice was hoarse and scratchy due to what felt like hours of questioning. The white table in front of you seemed to blur in and out of focus as your eyelids drooped. They hadn't let you eat or drink anything since you'd been here and you felt extremely dehydrated and slightly dizzy from hunger. Was this some sort of cruel and unusual punishment?

The detective continued to pace in front of you with a grim expression on her face. She was a tall, stocky middle-aged woman with chocolate, silver toned hair that was pulled back into a tight bun at the nape of her neck. She was wearing a sleek grey pantsuit and her badge glistened on her left breast pocket. She had been the one questioning you when you had been brought to the police station after turning yourself in.

"So you've said, and yet I can't help but think you're lying to me." She turned back to face you and placed her palms on the table in front of you. She was trying to intimidate you, you knew that much.

"Why would I lie to you? I've been a prisoner in their house for weeks. Why would I ever want to help them?" You gritted your teeth and nearly spit at her in anger. You had been going in circles during this entire session. She would accuse you of hiding something and then you would try to reassure her that you weren't. it wasn't working. No matter what you said, she didn't believe you.

From her anger and her passionate questioning of you, you could only assume that this investigation was personal for her. She seemed a little more aggressive than you thought a detective should be, and even though you were supposed to be an innocent witness, she was treating you like a criminal.

"Well, from the long an elaborate sob story that you've been reciting, it seems to me that you've had more than a few occasions to contact the police, and yet you never did. Am I wrong in this assessment?"

"What are you talking about? I never had a chance to call the police."

"I beg to differ. Did you not say that you were separated from them for an entire week?" She raised an eyebrow and you closed your mouth. She had a point. During the week that you had been at Becca's apartment, you hadn't called the police even though you had every opportunity. You had been telling yourself that you were simply laying low before you blew up their world, but that wasn't entirely true.

"Not only that, but I have it on good authority that you have been out in public with them on several occasions." She quirked an eyebrow and you bristled.

"I tried to escape. I tried to leave as soon as I got the chance, but it didn't work. They found me and they punished me for it. I did everything I could to get out of there." You protested.

"And yet during that week long hiatus, you didn't once attempt to contact the outside. Forgive me, but it seems like you were more than just their prisoner."

Your cheeks flushed at her implication. She continued to pace in front of you, her eyes sharp and vicious like a snake just before they sprung on their prey.

"Someone like you, a pretty girl in the heart of their home, you must have heard something. You have to give me something." You could hear the desperation in her voice. Even though it seemed like something that should have reassured you, it didn't. If she was desperate, it meant she was willing to risk anything. She had nothing left to lose and if that meant using you as leverage, she would do it.

"What do you think I was doing in there? You think I was sleeping around with them like some kind of prostitute?" You spat bitterly. The detective let out a small sigh and stopped pacing, clasping her hands behind her back.

"We all have to do what we must to survive. There are no judgements here. All I need from you is information. You don't have to protect them." You could see from her barely veiled disgust, that her 'no judgements' argument was completely false. That only made you even more angry.

"I'm not protecting them. I hate them. The took me away from my life and my family and they forced me to be a prisoner just so that they wouldn't kill my father. They blackmailed me, abused me, and used me and I wouldn't caught dead ever helping them."

"Listen to me, you have to give me something or I can't help you. Even with your testimony, you still look like an accomplice. You must give me any type of information that can absolve you from helping them."

And now you had come full circle. She had been pressing the narrative that you had to give up some information for you not be in trouble. But it had seemed too transparent a tactic to get you to talk. Unfortunately for her, you were smarter than you looked.

"You can keep asking for as long as you want. I told you everything I know and if I'm still found guilty when I have done nothing but be a victim, then my blood is on your hands."

The detective sighed in exasperation and waved a dismissive hand. The door to the interrogation room opened and two officers came in to escort you back to your holding cell. You stood up and followed them out, brushing your hands against the same clothes that you'd been wearing that morning when your world had shattered. That all seemed like a million years ago, not a mere few hours ago. So much had happened since then...

"Y/N! Stop messing around! Let's move, now!"

Your feet felt frozen and you had to wrench them off the floor. Logic and reason screamed at you, but as your body turned toward the SUV, something even more powerful took over your actions.

You couldn't pretend anymore. You wanted to be one of them. You were choosing to be one of them.

You took off toward the SUV and you could see Suga's face harden as he processed your actions. He shut his door to the shotgun seat as you climbed into the back next to Jungkook. You shut the door and Jimin revved the car hard, stepping on the gas.

Jungkook gestured for you to switch seats with him as Jimin pulled out onto the street and sped away from the mansion. You could hear the sirens of the police cars hot on your tail.

You switched with Jungkook, awkwardly pulling your body over his so you now sat in the middle of the back seat with V on one side and Jungkook on the other. Behind you in the trunk, J-Hope was sitting with all the bags that had been hastily packed in those few precious minutes. He was watching out the back window of the car and holding some kind of gun in his hands. It didn't look like a regular gun, with a strange black box in lieu of the barrel.

"We have to lose them." Jimin said through gritted teeth. Jungkook and V both rolled down their windows and stuck their upper bodies out of the vehicle, shooting at the police cars.

You felt awkward and small when you met Suga's gaze. He was sitting in the shotgun seat with a scowl on his face. That scowl you had been expecting, but you hadn't been expecting it to be directed at you. He was glaring at you like you had done something wrong. You quirked an eyebrow at him, but he quickly looked away.

"I can't deal with this." You realized that Suga had opened a laptop on his lap and was frantically typing in commands. "I need to find a new safe house. Damn it, RM and Jin are still radio silent."

You noticed that he was trying to figure out a way to erase the license plate on the car from any records. On top of that, he was trying to GPS the way out of this. You swallowed when you realized that you had the chance to be useful.

"Give me the computer." You said suddenly. The car went silent aside from the gunshots from V and Jungkook, who probably couldn't hear anything. Jimin's eyes met yours through the rearview mirror and you saw Suga's hands clench.

"I can figure it out, give it to me." You repeated. Suga's jaw jumped and you almost expect him to start yelling at you. Instead, he slowly rotated his head to face yours and stared you down.

"You hesitated." He said tersely. You raised an eyebrow in confusion. Before you could ask what he meant, he started again. "You thought about turning yourself in. You thought about betraying us."

You shut your mouth and swallowed hard. If there was one thing you had learned from your time here, it was that above all else, Suga valued loyalty. And the fact that you had been testing it ever since you got here was not something he was going to be keen on forgetting.

"I'm here, aren't I? I didn't betray you." You said quietly. Jimin's eyes flickered back to you for few seconds as he pressed on the accelerator. Suga looked away and closed his eyes.

You felt a flare of indignation pass through you as you heard a bullet ricochet off the side of the car.

"I really don't think—"

"We don't have for this!" You shouted, cutting him off. "Give me the laptop, I can get us out of here!" You demanded, holding your hand out expectantly. Suga hesitated again for a second as he glanced at you skeptically.

"Trust goes both ways." Jimin murmured quietly, putting a reassuring hand on Suga's forearm.

At that quiet statement, you felt something shift in yours and Suga's relationship. You had chosen them, even if it was a decision that you couldn't make immediately. You had trusted them enough to go with them and now Suga had to return that trust. Even though you may have shared a fleeting moment of lust with that kiss, you were nowhere near being able to trust him and vice versa. But someone had to take that leap of faith, and now was that time. Suga would have to trust you not to turn them in and you would have to trust them to protect you.

Suga passed the laptop over to you and pulled his phone out immediately. You lifted the lid up on the laptop and looked at the screen. You pulled out the GPS and started to search for somewhere to lose the police.

"Do we have a destination?" You asked as Jimin pulled the wheel into a hard right. You leaned sharply as the car swerved and you could see Jimin's gritted teeth through the mirror.

"No, we have no idea where to go. But right now, we just need to get rid of them." He said, his voice coming out strained. You narrowed your eyes and looked back at the laptop. Maybe you could lose them over the bridge. Or through a tunnel.

"Fuck!" Jungkook slid his body back in the car and started to reload his machine gun. "They have a fucking chopper. We're screwed." Jungkook fastened his gun and then stuck his body back out of the window. You realized he was right as you could hear the unmistakable growl of a helicopter above the city.

"How are we going to lose them now?" Jimin asked.

"Take a left here." You said sharply. There was a plan forming in your head. Yes, you may have been totally screwed, but that was only if the helicopter could see them. If they couldn't see you, then there was a chance you'd all be able to escape.

"Where are we going?" Suga asked, flipped his phone off. He looked back at you and you pursed your lips.

"The tunnel that goes under the mountain on the way out of town." You began to explain, "If we go through the tunnel, then they won't be able to see us anymore. And J-Hope can mess up their trackers with the frequency gun." You gestured to the odd looking gun in J-Hope's hand. You had figured out what it was when he started pointing it at the cop cars through the back window. Suga narrowed his eyes.

"Even if we get to the tunnel without being caught, they know our license plate, they know our car. They can just wait on the other side for us." He said skeptically. You took a breath and met his eyes.

"Not if we switch vehicles." You said firmly. Jimin's eyes met yours through the rearview mirror and Suga continued to stare, like you'd gone insane.

"Are you suggesting... stealing a moving vehicle?" Suga asked slowly.

"They won't be moving in the tunnel. The traffic in there is almost always at a stand-still." You deadpanned. You knew this because you used the tunnel a lot in college. It was the way to and from the university campus to the small apartment you shared with your ex-boyfriend. It was probably the favorite part of your day because you could sit in traffic and escape all the worries of the world for an hour.

"Who are you and what have you done with our high and mighty, self righteous little firecracker?" Suga was gaping at you, but there was a twinkle of amusement in his eyes. You cracked a smile, even though there was nothing amusing about this situation.

"We don't really have much of a choice. Are we doing this, or what?" You asked, quirking an eyebrow. Suga's face split into a grin and he turned back to face the front.

"Let's do this. Jimin, you know the way?"

"I got this. Buckle up, buttercup, this is going to be a bumpy ride." With that, Jimin stepped on the gas and the car surged forward, causing you to nearly drop the laptop. Jungkook and V both pulled themselves back in the car and rolled their window up. V started to reload as Jungkook turned to you and noticed you with the laptop in your lap.

"What did we miss?" He asked. He turned to look at J-Hope, who was using his frequency gun to disrupt the police's equipment.

"Change of plans, we're going to switch vehicles." Suga said from the front. As he filled the other two in, you started looking for a good place to go after making it out of the tunnel. There was a bridge that crossed over a lake not far outside the city. It led into a thick wood that would definitely keep the helicopter from behind able to see their location.

But how had they found you in the first place? Not only had the police found them, but it had been going on for a while. The first attack on the house was unexpected, and then Rey seemed to have been a decoy to someone else. And then on top of that, the man in the red suit had caught on too quickly. Like he already had an escape plan lined up, like he was already one step ahead of them...

Somehow, things had been going wrong ever since you had first moved in with them. There was something there. Some reason that you were overlooking, or that you couldn't seem to remember.

There was no time as Jimin moved in toward the tunnel. You shut the laptop as Jimin weaved his way through the traffic lanes. Once he was sure he was in a good spot in the middle on the tunnel, he started driving normally. You looked behind to see that the cop cars had been stalled outside the tunnel because of the traffic. You exhaled sharply as your hands started to shake with anticipation.

"That one." Suga said, causing you to turn your head toward him. He was pointing to a grey minivan a few cars ahead of yours. You peered into the minivan to see that there was an elderly man driving. You felt a stab of guilt.

"You guys... you're not going to hurt him are you?" You asked timidly. Suga seemed to totally ignore you as he turned to address V and Jungkook.

"Be inconspicuous. We have an audience, but we want to be as stealthy as possible." He ordered. Jungkook and V gave each other a look and then both exited the car simultaneously. They slammed the doors on either side of you and you jumped. As soon as they were gone, J-hope climbed into the seat next to you and dumped a duffle bag on your lap.

"You have to help me carry this stuff." He deadpanned. You gulped and nodded. You put the laptop aside and pulled the duffle bag's straps over your shoulder. J-hope passed you another bag and you pulled that one over the other shoulder. When you looked back at the car, you saw V leaning against the window of the car, a large smile on his face. Jungkook had already slipped inside the van, and from a distance, it looked like two old friends catching up. You gaped as V opened the driver's seat and helped the elderly man out.

"Okay, let's go." J-Hope nudged you and you scooted to the door, opening it and stepping outside. You looked around at all the unmoving cars and saw that most people were paying no attention to you or the other boys. The car directly next to you had a woman looking down at her phone, completely oblivious to what was happening.

"Y/N, come on." You felt someone grab your forearm and when you turned to look, you saw it was Suga, pulling you along with him. You fell into step next to him and his arm wrapped around your shoulder. You gasped and felt your cheeks flush. He bent down to your ear and you realized that he was doing it for show again. From afar, you probably just looked like a couple.

"You're just full of bright ideas, huh?" His voice was playful and gruff and you wondered if he was making conversation for show as well. You reached the minivan and Suga opened the door for you. You slipped into the backseat and turned around to look at how the switch was going.

V and Jimin were both standing outside of the SUV next to the driver's door with the old man in between them. They were laughing, like they were old friends. You couldn't see the old man's face, so you weren't sure if he was convinced by the act or if V and Jimin were threatening him from up close. You felt Jungkook sitting next to you and J-Hope clambered into the trunk again. You passed him the bags as Suga got into the car on the passenger's side. When you looked back, you saw V and Jimin walking toward the minivan, and the old man was gone, probably inside the SUV. V slipped in on the other side of you and Jimin took his place in the driver's seat.

"How did you do that?" You asked in bewilderment. Jimin smirked.

"I told him I rigged the car with explosives if he so much as moved a muscle." He said with a grin. Shivers ran down your back at his casual tone. You looked back at the SUV and could only imagine the paralyzing fear that the poor old man was under. You had to remind yourself that he would be fine. This had to be done, you had to escape somehow.

"Once we get out of here, it won't be long until they find that guy. Hopefully, it'll take them some time to get any information out of him. I mean, we scared him pretty good." Jungkook said matter-of-factly. You felt a pang of guilt again at his words.

"RM and Jin are standing by for extraction. We just need to lose the police before they can come get us." Suga said, typing on his phone.

"Over the bridge." You said, causing the car's focus to turn on you. "There's a forest across the bridge. We should hide in there and lose the car." You continued. Suga nodded as Jimin pressed on the gas. Finally, the traffic had started to move. You looked back at the SUV to see it wasn't moving. You really hoped the old man was okay.

When the car had finally left the tunnel, everyone was quiet. You were listening for sirens, for gunshots, for anything that would indicate that the plan had failed. But there was nothing, it seemed that you were in the clear.

About twenty minutes later, Jimin pulled into a side road after he'd crossed the bridge. He parked on the side of a gravel road that was well-hidden in the thicket. It was close to the lake and yet still far enough out of the way that it was unsuspecting.

One by one, boys exited the car. You scooted over to the door and were about to step out when you were stopped by a hand on your arm. You looked up to see Suga standing in front of you. He held his hand out for you and you rose an eyebrow. You took it and he helped you out of the van. With your two feet planted on the ground, the adrenaline from the car chase had finally died down. You were still breathing hard, but you hadn't felt this kind of relief in a long time.

"How far out are RM and Jin?" Jungkook asked. He was leaning against the van, adjusting his machine gun. V and J-Hope were both stretching out their tense muscles. Jimin had pulled out the laptop and was staring at the screen with unbreakable focus.

"A few minutes. We should be able to get out of here without a scratch." Suga said moving to the back of the vehicle. He started to pull out all the bags that you and J-Hope had carried. Your eyes narrowed when you saw the familiar messenger bag that held your laptop and your phone.

Something still didn't sit right with you. You knew you should have been grateful that you hadn't been caught, but it still didn't hide the fact that you were almost caught. The police had known where to find the gang even though you were practically out in the middle of nowhere. The mansion was supposed to be a safe house, which begged the question: how did the police know the location of said safe house?

Your eyes narrowed on your messenger bag and you pursed your lips. Was it you? was it your devices that had led them to you? It wasn't possible was it? Your entire hard drive had been wiped on your laptop and your phone had been reset. That meant all your applications and storage was gone. Was it even possible to track a device that had been wiped? The only way that a device could be tracked was if there was an external tracking device on it... and you knew for a fact that you didn't have one of those...

At least... you were pretty sure you didn't...

"Shit!" You turned, pulling away from your thoughts when Jimin shouted. You looked to where he was looking to see the bridge in the distance. You could just make out a flurry of flashing lights as at least four or five police cars.

"How the fuck did they find us? Again!" Suga shouted, slamming the side of his fist on the car door.

Suddenly, you heard the loud revving of a car behind. You turned to see an identical black SUV to the one you had just abandoned. You saw RM's face in the window and breathed a sigh of relief. You started to run toward the car, following the other boys. You stopped at the pile of bags and started to pick up a few of them. You paused when your hands ran over the material of your messenger bag.

This only proved it. They had to be tracking you. And there was only one explanation. You couldn't understand it, but you knew it had to be true. It was your devices that was the problem. And you had to get rid of them. You knew what you had to do.

You dropped the other bags and grabbed your messenger bag. You started to back away from the direction of the SUV. As the other climbed into the SUV one by one, no one had noticed you not following. It wasn't until Suga was at the door when he turned to see you backing away.

"Y/N, what are you doing, we need to leave now!" He yelled, beckoning for you to follow. You swallowed and looked over to see that the cop cars were getting closer. You only had another minute or two at most.

"Go!" You shouted, making a frantic shooing motion with your hands. "Get out of here!"

"Y/N, stop messing around. We're not leaving you, let's go!"

"I'll be fine. You have to go. Now!"

With that, you turned on your heel and sprinted in the opposite direction, your messenger bag firmly clutched over your shoulder. You didn't turn to see if the boys had left, and you knew you couldn't. You had to do this. You had to protect them. And maybe at the same time, you could protect yourself.

You sprinted toward the edge of the lake. There was a ledge that looked over a small cliff with the lake down below. You glanced over your shoulder to see the cop cars pulling up. Doing the only thing that came to mind to save both yourself and the gang, you threw the messenger bag over your shoulder and watched as it splashed into the blue abyss, sinking down until you couldn't make it out anymore.

"Put your hands in the air and come quietly!"

You slowly rotated around with your hands raised. You were almost incoherent as you felt the police officers lock you in handcuffs. There was a ringing in your ears that wouldn't go away.

But there was one thing you were certain of. No matter what happened now, they were safe.
