I rule the empire of night
hidden behind uncertainty,
find refuge in the shadowed
alleys that hold more promise than
the vast sky ever will.

My lover, the moon, 
calls into the city with a lungful howl,
allowing me to slip in between the
cracks of dawn,
sleek and nocturnal,
before I unleash the black blood.

Finger my emptiness with cold fingers,
because I am not afraid of the dark
as I used to be,
since the monsters that lurked behind
the telltale opening of my closet door,
the beady eyes that play tricks behind
the window pane.
the chanting that transfix me under
my rickety-stick bed;
they are all mine now.

I am now the creature in your head,
with talons that claw at your soul,
a reaper that steals your light;
I, who fell from the heavens
and crawled from the pit,
have scaled wings shouldering
my empire,
and leaking dreams with
a tinge of brutality.

I am a shadow creature,
and when you hear my prowl,
you'll never wish to see daylight
again.
