Chapter 3

If you could ask Tan how he envisioned his boyfriend's first day at work, he would picture Fang in a white lab coat having professional discussions with his colleagues, however that couldn't be further from the truth, Fang's first day was a nightmare. Fang knew what he was going to experience: his internship in a local hospital before his degree proved how exhausting a workday could get, but at the time, whenever Tan asked him about it, Fang simply highlighted the interesting and good parts of it.

"You're doctor Fang, am I right? Doctor Vie won't be able to come today, so we need a substitute. She had several appointments reserved, but you should easily be able to take care of them, just the usual routine checkups, here's the list" the receptionist said as soon as Fang walked into the hospital. He didn't even have time to say good morning. Was he still so sure to start that career? Who knows...

The first three appointments went quite smoothly, he welcomed the patients, who seemed to like him for his good manners, checked the usual medicaments that they took or talked to them in case there was a specific issue. The fourth one though...

A mom took his little son to see the doctor. The child was coughing a little, nothing to worry about, but the mother seemed very preoccupied. Fang controlled that the cough wasn't caused by anything serious, after that he went to his desk and started writing.

"Nothing serious, ma'am, however I'll prescribe you a cough syrup, he needs to take it twice a day only if the cough persists. It is still pretty early for the next appointment, if you wait here I'll go take a hot cup of tea for your child, it will surely help a bit" Fang said and handed her the paper. She thanked him a lot and waited in the room, while Fang walked outside.

He quickly came back, handed the cup to the little boy and waited for him to drink it. Unfortunately, the child coughed again, this time spilling the hot tea all over Fang. The young doctor wanted to scream in pain, but as soon as he noticed that the little boy was crying, he focused back on his patient. Sadly for Fang, most of the other appointments of that days followed a similar pattern with involuntary dangerous or rude patients.

By the end of the day he was so stressed that he completely forgot about lunchbreak. When no one could see him, he walked to the restroom and washed his face.

"Remember Fang... you worked hard to get here... it won't be just a bunch of annoying patients to drive you away from the path you chose... why the hell did I choose this... don't say it!" Fang said while looking at his reflection in the mirror.

Fang went back to the reception with the list he received in the morning in his hands. He looked at the receptionist with an exhausted face and said:

"I've finished all the appointments, is there anything else?"

"Doctor Fang, have you seen what time it is?"

"What do you mean?"

"Your shift ended half an hour ago, shouldn't you head back home?" the receptionist replied. Fang looked at the clock and realized that it was time to leave. After sighing in relief, he thanked the receptionist and left the building.
