Chapter 6

Tommy looked up at the tall building and fixed his clothes. He messed his hair a bit and walked into the building. It looked like what he'd seen of a hospital waiting room. A desk with someone sitting behind it talking to someone at the front of a long line of people, chairs with multiple people sitting in them either talking to people in suits or taking selfies. Tommy grimaced and walked into the line of people, standing at the end of it behind some guy in a blue t-shirt. The guy turned around and smiled at him, he was holding a stack of papers to his chest and seemed too excited to be there.

"You here for the interview too? I hear over 100 people are going for it! Not much of a chance that you'll get it, but I wish you the best of luck!" Tommy nodded and smiled slightly. He interacted with civilians all the time, this would be easy.

"You not? Is it usually so crowded in here?" The guy nodded and Tommy watched as someone walked to an elevator and got in, going up. The line moved forward a bit and Tommy sighed anxiously.

"Oh, I work here already. And yes, it is always this crowded. See those guys in the suits?" The guy pointed at someone and Tommy looked at them. He noticed that everyone in a suit had a folder or briefcase and he nodded before looking back at the guy. "Yeah, those are lawyers. I manage the cases they bring in and decide what we do about it. Some people get mad at us and file lawsuits but they normally get dismissed. We're trying to convince the government to pass a law to make us immortal to legal action." Tommy hummed and nodded. It made sense that the hero committee would deal with legal issues since they have trouble not destroying things.

"Maybe if you have a court meeting and show them all the obscene lawsuits it could work. I'm sure people wreck their stuff and try blaming it on you to get rich." The guy grinned widely and nodded eagerly. The line moved forward and Tommy took a deep breath.

"That's incredible thinking! I was thinking the same thing just the other day, that's what these papers are. I just need the documentation of everyone who's come in with a false accusation." Tommy nodded and they stood in silence for a while. The line moved slowly and eventually the guy in front of Tommy was getting the papers he needed. Before he left, the guy looked at Tommy and held out his hand.

"It was nice meeting you, I hope I see you around. By the way, that yellow looks horrible on you." Tommy shook the guy's hand and looked up at the hair. He didn't think his hair was that bad. And yellow? Maybe the guy thought it was dyed. It is a pretty prominent blond.

"Uhm.. thanks but, my hair isn't dyed. It's naturally like this." The guy looked shocked for a second and giggled quietly.

"No, not your hair. Your hair looks lovely. I meant your vest." Tommy looked down at his very red vest and when he looked up again, the guy was in the elevator and the doors were closing. Tommy shook off the experience and walked up to the front desk, smiling at the obviously exhausted receptionist.

"How can I help you today?" Tommy grimaced at the forced customer service voice and hummed. The guy was wearing a red plaid shirt with a black coat over it. His brown hair was greasy and tousled as though he'd been running his hands through his hair every chance he could get.

"How does it feel to work for heroes but still have to do customer service?" The receptionist glared at him and Tommy almost laughed in his face. He kept it together though and straightened himself out. He was here to get a job, he shouldn't be a dick to the second worker he talks to.

"Are you here to ask invasive questions or are you here for something?" Tommy smiled and hid his hands behind his back.

"I'm here for the interview." The receptionist nodded and typed some things into his computer. He looked Tommy up and down and typed some more things down.

"You look a little young, and I'm not finding you on our list. Do you have your documents with you?" Tommy looked shocked a moment before shaking his head. Themis didn't say anything about documents. Nor did he say anything about a list. "Ok, I'm just going to need your name."

"Tommy." The receptionist raised his eyebrow and looked at Tommy questioningly.

"Just Tommy?" Tommy nodded and cracked his knuckles. "What about a last name?"

"I don't have a last name." The guy looked shocked a moment before typing into his computer. He bit his lip and leaned back in his chair before looking at Tommy.

"Well I'll be damned. There it is, Tommy. You can head right up, floor 28." Tommy nodded and walked to the elevator, walking in and pressing the button for floor 28. There was a man in the elevator with him. A few inches taller, wearing a red beanie with an emerald earring accompanied by a couple of black earrings. His ears were pointed and his gaze hard, not even looking at Tommy.

"You the last one?" Tommy took a deep breath and nodded. He assumed he knew what the man meant but he was probably wrong. The man's voice was familiar but he didn't know how.

"Yep. Long day?" The man sighed and nodded. He looked at Tommy and stared at him for a while. Tommy felt a bit uncomfortable but he didn't say anything about it. The guy took a deep breath and nodded shortly.

"Yeah. Lot of people in and out." Tommy nodded and when the elevator came to a stop on floor 28, both of them got out and Tommy stared at the man as he walked into a room. Tommy noticed a sign pointing towards an opened door saying 'this way' so Tommy followed the sign and walked through the door.

The room he'd walked into was an office, a desk right in the middle with a single desk lamp and a few papers. There was a filing cabinet to the left of the desk that was stuffed full and a small table with a single succulent sat in the middle of it. There was a chair in front of the desk and someone sitting behind the desk. The man looked familiar but again, Tommy couldn't place where from. The room was a bit dark but considering how stressed the man looked he didn't have to figure out why.

"Sit. This interview is being recorded for documentation purposes." The man spoke and Tommy nodded, sitting down in the chair. The man had a yellow sweater on and a red beanie, reminding Tommy of the guy he saw in the elevator. What was with these people and red beanies?

"What's your name?" Tommy shuffled in the seat a bit, getting comfortable while trying to make himself look professional. These were the big shots, he had to do well in this interview.

"Tommy" Wilbur leaned back in his chair, which looked a lot more comfortable than Tommy's chair but it could slide.

"Just Tommy?" Tommy nodded and put his hands in his lap.

"Yes sir." Wilbur grimaced and Tommy took a deep breath. Did he say something wrong?

"Don't call me sir, Wilbur is fine." Holy shit it's the musician Wilbur Soot... working for the heroes? That wasn't what Tommy was expecting. Is that how he knew that other guy?

"Yes sir Wilbur." Wilbur sighed and Tommy smirked. He felt more at ease knowing it wasn't a hero he was talking to, just a musician working for the heroes. Maybe he was just there for the interviews. Or maybe the musician was secretly a hero.

"How old are you?" Tommy didn't know if he should lie or not but he didn't really see a reason to lie. He was completely separated from his vigilante persona, he'd be fine.

"16." Wilbur looked confused for a moment and Tommy found it a bit funny if he was honest.

"Sixteen?" Tommy nodded slowly and smiled at Wilbur. He was finding it increasingly easy to be himself here.

"Yep"

"You do understand that this is an interview for a full time position, in which a 16 year old would be incapable of doing because of the labor laws" Tommy furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. There was nothing he couldn't do that an adult could. Other than drink.

"Why not?" Wilbur looked a bit annoyed but kept a calm tone.

"Because of school" Oh yeah that made more sense. It didn't apply to Tommy though.

"Oh I dropped out" Wilbur looked slightly shocked but he concealed it to stay professional. It seemed boring to be so straight faced all the time. Tommy could barely do it as long as he had.

"Why?" Tommy shrugged and thought of the best reason other than that Tubbo dared him to.

"Not for me. I decided it was better for me to learn what I deem important as I go along." Wilbur seemed impressed and Tommy took a breath of relief.

"That's respectful. Would you ever go for a higher education?" Tommy shook his head and adjusted his vest.

"Not anytime soon but it has been in my head." Wilbur nodded and leaned forward in his seat, resting his elbows on the desk.

"Why not soon?" Tommy shrugged and mumbled under his breath.

"Don't have the money for it. I live in West." Wilbur almost looked apologetic but Tommy refused to believe his city was anything to be sorry for.

"Oh, that's unfortunate." Tommy stayed silent and stared at Wilbur. Wilbur seemingly got the hint and changed the subject. "So, how many hours a week are you looking for? The minimum hours we could do for full time would be 7 hours a day, 35 hours a week. You'd get paid weekly, $15 an hour so with minimum hours you'd have around $2,100 a month. Or you can work more hours in a day and get more than that. That's just an estimate anyways, it may differ." Holy shit that'd be enough to pay their rent and get food. Is that how the economy is supposed to work? Tubbo and Ranboo could quit a job each and have more free time if he got this job.

"That almost feels like too much." Wilbur looked concerned but chuckled awkwardly.

"That's barely enough to get by in the east city. Not enough to get by in the north city. What's rent like in the west city?" Tommy thought about it for a moment before making his decision on how much he remembered Tubbo having said the rent went up to.

"$700 a month, not including anything the landlord doesn't cover." Wilbur nodded and Tommy crossed one leg across the other.

"Not too far off then. I don't know why housing costs so much." Because houses keep getting destroyed by villains and heroes, obviously. Tommy did not voice that opinion.

"So, what would you like to work?" Tommy hummed as though he was thinking about it but he already knew that he'd go for the minimum hours. He always did.

"I think 7 hours would be fine. What would the schedule look like?" They were using a lot of terms that meant 'if'. Tommy was hoping that these things would end up mattering.

"11-5. Would that work for you?" Tommy nodded. "Alright. So, what makes you want to work here?" Tommy thought of the most subtle way to put it.

"I was coerced by my friend to try it, plus I got fired from my old job." Wilbur nodded and Tommy looked at the plant on the table. It was kind of cute. Completely out of place in the empty office. The less the better, Tommy supposed.

"How'd you get fired?" Tommy took a deep breath and squeezed his hands tightly. He knew the question was coming but it didn't make it easier.

"Someone left a stove on and I was trying to stop a fire that started from someone leaving an oven mitt on the stove. I got burned up pretty bad and the pay wasn't good anyways so I quit. I like saying I got fired because I left due to a fire." Wilbur laughed quietly and Tommy smiled slightly. Tommy's back ached and Tommy leaned into the back of his chair more.

"Well, I'm glad you can find humor in the situation. I don't mean to press but, where did you get burned? I haven't seen any burn scars or a hindrance to movement." Tommy was shocked that Wilbur had been examining him. It made sense though.

"Oh that's kind of private actually. It wouldn't affect me on the job though so don't worry." Wilbur nodded and Tommy took a deep breath, relaxing his racing heart. When did he become so worked up?

"Alright. Do you have any questions for me?" Wilbur readjusted himself as though he was getting ready for the interview to be finished. Tommy did have some questions though and he wasn't going to refrain from asking just because Wilbur had a long day.

"What would the work look like?" Wilbur smiled and turned his head thoughtfully. Maybe not many people ask about it.

"Well you'd be helping fill out paperwork and taking notes during meetings. Think of it like being an intern, except you'd help with some hero work on the field. Like checking in with heroes that are on patrol and sending locations of crime to heroes." Oh. Like Tubbo. Seemed easy enough.

"You'd mainly work with myself and my teammates but other heroes can request your help. What does your transportation look like?" Why would the look of Tommy's 'transportation', if he actually had any type of vehicle, matter at all?

"What?"

"Do you have a car or take a bus? What's your method of transportation?" That made more sense but Tommy still didn't understand why it mattered.

"Walking. I walk everywhere." Wilbur nodded and Tommy shifted a bit. How much longer would he be stuck there making casual conversation?

"Ok. Do you see a lot of crime on the streets while walking?" All the time actually. It was a very common thing to get mugged or stolen from.

"Sometimes. It's not all that uncommon in West for people to be trying to rob you or something. I don't usually go through East or North." Wilbur nodded and picked up one of the papers on the desk, grabbing a pen and writing something down in really messy handwriting. Tommy couldn't make out any of the words.

"What about South?" Tommy shrugged and Wilbur raised his eyebrow, probably looking for elaboration. Tommy barely went to south, except for when he was visiting the big man.

"I have a friend in South I visit sometimes." Wilbur nodded and Tommy looked at the plant. Maybe Wilbur could use a bit of talking to the plant just to get it out of his system. Tommy liked to talk, don't get him wrong, but Tommy wasn't here to be interviewed about the crime rates in places these heroes were supposed to know the crime rates of.

"What's the crime like there?" Tommy sighed and was tempted to just ignore Wilbur. He didn't think it'd go over well though.

"Mostly old white men who want to be villains but commit small crimes. Some have potential though." Tommy heard the scribbling of the pen and looked back at the paper. The words were unintelligible. Maybe.. backwards?

"Do you want them to become villains?" Wilbur looked up at Tommy and Tommy shook his head quickly. It'd just be more work for him if people in West or South started committing real crimes.

"No, but what can I do other than make bets on who might become one?"

"Report it to authorities?" Tommy shook his head and crossed his arms.

"That's lame."

"You're very outspoken about your opinions."

"Thank you." Wilbur smiled and Tommy relaxed his arms. He hoped he was making a good impression.

"What's your opinions on heroes?" Tommy shrugged and cracked his knuckles.

"Most have the right intentions but are set out for the wrong missions. Like, Awesamdude would be so much better at fighting villains like Hangman who would be no match for his technology manipulation. Hangman literally has a robotic eye and hand. Why have him assigned to Aristo? Aristo is a cat, he has nothing to do with robotics. It's a waste of power." Wilbur hummed thoughtfully and started writing something down.

"That's a good idea. What about Faux?" Why Faux specifically? Was Faux on Hangman's case? Shouldn't they be smart enough to figure these things out on their own and not by the word of a 16 year old?

"Faux would be good with villains like Hellbent or Punz who are strong but not fast enough to react to his movements." Wilbur wrote on the paper again and Tommy had half the nerve to scoff. Was he seriously taking note of Tommy's opinion? Wilbur stopped writing and looked up at Tommy.

"What about vigilantes? You haven't mentioned any." Tommy shrugged and wiped his hands on his legs. He wasn't going to tell the heroes the best way to catch vigilantes, they weren't the bad guys.

"Don't know enough about them. People tell you a lot about villains because they're a known bad and it's good to know about them in case you have a run-in but all you hear about vigilantes is that they're bad. I couldn't even name any." Total lie but whatever. Wilbur didn't need to know.

"Have you ever seen a vigilante?" Tommy nodded and Wilbur looked puzzled. He couldn't act like he'd never even heard of vigilantes, that'd be too suspicious.

"I have seen a few of them. Couldn't name any though."

"How do you know they were vigilantes?"

"Because they were fighting bad guys and my friend told me about every hero so none of them fit either description." Wilbur nodded and leaned back. Tommy's story made sense now.

"Your friends into heroes?" Tommy shook his head and Wilbur looked confused.

"Not really but they're doing a school project on The Angel so they're learning a lot about all the heroes." Wilbur almost looked shocked but after second thought, decided it made a bit of sense.

"They have a project about The Angel? Tell me about it." Tommy barely knew jack shit about the project, he didn't talk to Purpled that often.

"Well the project is to find out as much as you can about The Angel. People who get pictures of him get extra credit." Wilbur hummed thoughtfully and wrote more down on the paper. Tommy had to wonder how Wilbur wrote gibberish so effortlessly.

"Why would the teacher be trying to get information about The Angel?" Tommy was getting annoyed. He didn't know any of this, why was Wilbur pushing to know?

"Are you seriously analyzing my friend's teacher?" Wilbur looked sheepish.

"I'm just curious. What's the teacher's name?" Tommy huffed and shrugged.

"I don't know, I'm not in the class." Wilbur nodded and wrote something else down. It was annoying.

"Right. Well, do you mind asking your friend for a photo of the teacher and the teacher's name?" Tommy sighed and cracked his knuckles. He did not want to hunt down Purpled. Maybe he could find him on patrol.

"How would I even get that information to you?" Wilbur chuckled quietly and Tommy felt his patience thinning quickly. Did he really want to work there?

"We can set up a meeting. Besides, I'm sure I'll be seeing you again soon." Tommy's irritation turned into confusion quickly and he took a deep breath.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, so far I can almost guarantee you'll make my top ten list. Then my partners decide who the top five are and surely The Angel will take liking to you so you'll get on his top five, and I think you'd get along well with The Captain or Awesamdude so during the meeting to discuss who to hire I'm sure you'll be their pick. You have a high chance of working here, Tommy." Tommy beamed and had to take another deep breath to calm the excitement bubbling in his chest. He could actually have a job again.

"Well, isn't that lovely. I don't see what exactly makes me likeable since I don't have much experience with anything in the job description but I'm a fast learner so I wouldn't need a lot of training." Wilbur nodded and stood, extending his hand.

"Well, I'll check your file and get back to you within the week. What's your preferred method of payment?" Tommy thought about it for a moment. Card would be easier but he'd have to be 18 to get a card. It was one of the dumbest laws West had.

"Well I don't have a card so cash, I'd say." Wilbur grimaced and nodded.

"Right. No 16 year old in West would have any card." Tommy furrowed his eyebrows and stared at Wilbur, slightly insulted.

"No need to say it like that." Wilbur looked shocked a moment before smiling slightly.

"Of course, my apologies. We'll talk more soon, Tommy." Tommy stood and shook Wilbur's hand before leaving. He walked out of the room and saw the guy from before staring at him. It was kind of creepy, but Tommy didn't dwell on it as he walked to the elevator. As soon as the doors of the elevator shut, Tommy pulled out his phone and called Ranboo. As the line was ringing, Tommy vaguely registered that he normally called Tubbo to tell him how the interview went. Technically, Tubbo didn't know he had an interview, as they kept it from him to surprise him if Tommy managed to get the job.

"Hello?" Tommy grinned widely and took a deep breath.

"It went so well Ranboo." Tommy heard Ranboo gasp from the other side of the line and felt his excitement grow. He had a chance. Not the best one, but a chance nonetheless. There'd be a meeting, at least. When the elevator stopped and the doors opened again, Tommy walked out of the building proudly. That was it, either he got the job or he'd have to live off of Tubbo and Ranboo.

"Ran, if I get this job, you and Tubbo don't have to work as much. That's how good the pay is." Tommy continued to talked to Ranboo all the way home, and once he got there Ranboo and him talked in person about the interview and the job. They were both really excited about it, Ranboo even more so as Tommy told him they could move to a better city eventually. It was a very exciting day, and Tubbo was very confused when he came home to two happy roommates and no explanation.
