Chapter 21

"You ok there kid?" Tommy looked at Awesamdude and nodded his head. He was finally back to work after two weeks. Hadn't patrolled in that time either. It was exhausting being bedridden all day.

"Yeah, fine." Tommy focused on what Awesamdude was working on again and Awesamdude turned his attention back to it as well. They were making some fork thing for Thanatos that would act like a boomerang. Tommy didn't really pay attention to the explanation.

"We need a material that will be light but weighted enough for a good throw, and we need to design it to match him. This is my rough design, what do you think?" Tommy looked at the iPad Awesamdude shoved in front of his face. It was a pretty design, apparently it was called a trident.

"Cool." Awesamdude moved the iPad away and Tommy's alarm went off, signaling the end of this session.

"Have a nice day, Tommy." Tommy walked to the elevator and went back to his floor. He didn't know what to think about Thanatos having a projectile weapon. Tommy didn't like the idea of superheroes having weapons at all. He already had one interaction with Thanatos, he didn't want to become a Lost.

"You going to get out of the elevator?" Tommy jumped and looked to his right, seeing Hbomb. The elevator was stopped on his floor, and Hbomb was staring at him expectantly. He didn't realize Hbomb was in the elevator, but Tommy quickly stepped out and speed walked to his office. Tommy closed and locked the door behind himself, and leaned against it. He was just having a rough time, he'd be back to normal soon. There was a knock at the door and Tommy screamed, jumping away from it. He put his hand on his chest and unlocked the door, The Angel opening it from the other side a moment later with a shocked expression on his face.

"Sorry for scaring you. Is everything alright? Wilbur called for you 10 minutes ago." Tommy took a deep breath and looked at his laptop. He'd gotten back almost half an hour ago, and he hadn't even moved from the door. No wonder his legs were stiff.

"Fine. Sorry, I must've not heard him." The Angel nodded and moved out of the way so Tommy could go past him. Tommy left his office and saw Wilbur on the couch. He walked over and sat next to Wilbur.

"Awesamdude tells me you struggled to focus with him." Tommy shrugged and brought his knees up to his chest, resting his arms on them. "You're not in any trouble for it, I know you're still recovering from a concussion. Those are no fun at all." Tommy shook his head and sighed. He was healed from the concussion. He just couldn't focus recently. Maybe it was due to the quickly dwindling time he had to prepare for the celebration. Maybe it was because he saw the stupid smile on Thanatos's mask everywhere, and the ghost of static rang in his ears every time he thought of him.

"I don't know. I thought I did fine." Wilbur hummed and Tommy rested his chin on his arm.

"Well, I've gone ahead and told the others you won't be able to work with them today." Tommy gave a small thumbs up and Wilbur sighed. It wasn't what Wilbur wanted, and Tommy knew that, but he couldn't care that much. He didn't owe Wilbur a better response anyways. Tommy thought back to his meeting Thanatos. Thanatos could have easily arrested him, or just as easily killed him. Why not? Did Thanatos know about him and Themis's partnership?

"Hey Tommy, how well do you know how to cook?" Tommy looked at The Angel, who'd made his way to the kitchen at some point.

"I know a few things. I don't do the cooking usually." The Angel nodded and motioned Tommy forward. Tommy stood and walked into the kitchen, looking back momentarily to find Wilbur wasn't on the couch where Tommy had left him.

"I'm making steak and potatoes for dinner, since you have an hour left of your shift would you like to help?" Tommy shrugged and nodded.

"Sure, why not." The Angel smiled and gave Tommy a bag of potatoes.

"Just scrub these off in the sink first. Warm water and your fingers will do." Tommy rinsed the potatoes off like he'd been told to and realized he didn't ask how many of them until he'd finished the entire bag.

"How many of these do we need?" The Angel looked over from where he was seasoning the steaks and grinned, chuckling quietly.

"Half of them. It's ok, the rest will probably be used by Themis tomorrow." Tommy nodded and put the potatoes on the counter, next to a cutting board. "Do your roommates like steak?" Tommy looked at The Angel and furrowed his eyebrows.

"I 'spose so. It's what we have on birthdays as like a special meal so, yeah." The Angel hummed and Tommy looked at the steaks he were preparing. There were seven. "You better not be doing what I think you are." The Angel grinned and shook his head.

"Of course not, Tommy. Just making conversation." Tommy hummed and continued helping make dinner until it was time for him to leave.

He ignored the pit in his stomach when he got home and they had the meal he'd helped make for dinner, only having an idea of how it got there.

"AS" Tommy turned around and punched a guy in the face. He grabbed their wrist and slammed his elbow into it, making the guy drop his gun and dislocating his elbow in the process. Tommy took the gun and aimed it at the guy's head, the man's good arm shooting up in surrender.

"What is it with you lot being such shit criminals? Give me a challenge." The guy looked insulted and Tommy smashed the gun into his head, the male dropping unconscious.

"Stop bitching, you'd suck too without me." Tommy rolled his eyes and grabbed the small bag of cash the thief had stolen. He took half of it and put the rest back in the register.

"You're the eyes in the back of my head, bitch. Course I'd suck without you." Tommy ziptied the criminal and dragged him out of the store, catching eye of a possible drug dealer staring at him. The potential criminal walked away seconds after Tommy looked at him.

"Alright Toms, your shift is over. Make your way home now." Tommy sighed and watched a police car roll onto the street without sirens or lights on. Tommy walked into an alley and climbed up a garbage bin and onto a roof, watching the policeman and her partner drag the criminal into their car and drive off calmly. Tommy realized once they left that he still had the gun, and the safety wasn't on. He so could've shot himself climbing on the roof.

"I have a new toy." Tommy clicked on the safety and started making his way home. He knew he technically had a little less than an hour left but Tubbo wanted him home, so that's where he was going.

"That sounds so wrong, rephrase that now." Tommy snickered and looked around. It was such a peaceful and quiet night. There were criminals everywhere of course, even Tommy was technically one, but they all seemed to agree to leave well enough alone.

"I stole a weapon." Tommy heard Tubbo sigh and he hummed to himself. He could just walk the street instead of the rooftops, but he was having fun. "What are we doing for Ran's birthday?"

"Oh shit that is coming up isn't it. Well, I had an idea in mind for us all to reconnect. I don't like how tense it is around the house. So we can do that for his birthday instead." Tommy made a noise of approval and the roof shook under him. He stopped walking and looked down at it, then looked around. That wasn't normal.

"Hey, you feel that?" The shaking stopped for a second, then continued.

"No? What should I be feeling?" Not an earthquake then, or a big one at least. Tommy noticed a potted plant falling off a window sill to his left and made his way in that direction. He got off the roof and ran that way, the shaking becoming worse as he ran.

"The ground's like, shaking and shit. I thought it was an earthquake but it feels worse in one direction." Tommy started thinking of what might be the cause. "What's Ran doing?"

"He should be coming home too but he disconnected the call because he wanted to be alone for a bit." Tommy hummed and a knife went flying past his face, just barely nicking the bridge of his nose, and cutting through his mask. Tommy cursed and held his face, backing into the alleyway behind him. The cut wasn't bleeding too bad, but it stung like a bitch and the lower half of Tommy's face was covered in blood after a few seconds.

"Shit, found the cause. Probably." Tommy peeked out from the alleyway and looked where the knife came from, spotting Ranboo and Themis in a fight. Ranboo kept putting up shields of concrete and dirt to block Themis's weapons. Just what Tommy needed, his friend and best friend fighting and him being collateral damage. "Yep, definitely the cause."

"Are you ok? What is it?" If Tommy went over in costume, then he wouldn't be able to explain the cut on his nose at work without Themis knowing. If he went as a civilian, the cut would be explained and they'd both probably stop fighting.

"Call you back Tub, gotta do something real quick." Tommy hung up the call and took his suit off, grateful for wearing civilian clothes underneath it. He hid the suit behind a dumpster and walked out of the alleyway, grabbing the knife and then walking towards the fight. Neither of them noticed him, so Tommy cleared his throat.

"Oi you cunts!" Both of their heads snapped to him, with looks of horror on their faces. Tommy held up the knife and glared at them. "Mind not throwing shit aimlessly?" Ranboo dropped the clump of dirt he had and ran towards Tommy, immediately checking the cut on his face.

"Tommy? What are you doing out here?" Themis walked towards them and Ranboo turned to glare at him.

"You hurt a civilian!? What is the matter with you?" Themis glared right back at him and Tommy rolled his eyes.

"I'm fine, dickhead. What's going on here, why are you trying to kill each other in the middle of the street?" Ranboo turned back to Tommy and a fabric store sign ripped off it's pole and flew into Ranboo's hand. He tore off a piece of it and cleaned the blood off of Tommy's face.

"We're not trying to kill each other-" "speak for yourself." Ranboo's head snapped to Themis and Tommy rolled his eyes. Themis crossed his arms and Ranboo looked back to Tommy, sighing when he saw half of Tommy's face was covered in blood again. "I wasn't trying to kill him. We just had a disagreement and he got mad, that's all." Ranboo pressed the cloth against the cut and Tommy hissed in pain. Ranboo smiled apologetically at him and Tommy pushed his hand away.

"Themis, you were trying to kill this guy over a disagreement?" Themis looked at the ground in what Tommy assumed was shame and Ranboo put the cloth back up to his nose. "I thought you were better than the other heroes, what the fuck?" Themis looked at him hurt and Tommy glared at him.

"Tommy, you don't know the whole story."

"Right, I'm sure there's a perfectly good excuse for attempted murder." Themis opened his mouth like he was going to say something, but shut it and reached his arm out.

"Give me back my knife." Tommy furrowed his eyebrows and raised the middle finger at Themis.

"This is going in my collection, fuck you." Ranboo snorted and Themis sighed. He retracted his arm and crossed his arms again.

"Fine but I'm docking your pay for it." Tommy gawked at Themis and Ranboo glared at him.

"Fuck you you are, Wilbur's my boss not you. Actually, Wilbur acts like he's the boss of you too. I'm calling him." Themis's eyes widened as Tommy pulled out his phone. Themis snatched the phone from his hand and backed away from Tommy, who was only not chasing him because Ranboo was holding him still.

"Hey! Give that back!" Ranboo lifted his hand and the phone went flying into his hand. He handed it back to Tommy and Themis huffed in anger.

"Don't take the civilian's phone just because you don't want to get in trouble." Tommy rolled his eyes and pressed on Wilbur's contact.

"Would you please not tell Wilbur about this? He's not my boss, he's just annoying about things." Tommy scoffed and rolled his eyes.

"Well since you asked so nicely," Themis sighed in relief and Tommy hit the call button. He didn't put it up to his ear until Wilbur answered. 'Hey Will! Guess who's here?" Themis's face turned pale and Wilbur mumbled a tired 'who' on the other side of the call.

"It's Themis! In West! Say hi." Tommy put the phone on speaker and Themis shook his head.

"Themis?" Themis winced and sighed.

"Hey Will.." there was a bit of shuffling on the other side of the line and Wilbur yawned.

"It's 3 in the morning, what the hell are you doing in West? Tommy, what are you doing awake, you work in 8 hours." Tommy hummed and laughed sarcastically.

"Well I was going to go for some late night ice cream but there was seemingly an earthquake coming from one direction so I followed it and guess what I found?" Wilbur hummed, sounding disinterested. Tommy stayed silent, genuinely waiting for Wilbur to guess.

"What did you find?" "Guess." "No, just tell me." Tommy rolled his eyes and Ranboo put his hand on Tommy's shoulder.

"Themis tried to kill a vigilante." Wilbur didn't say anything for a solid ten seconds so Tommy continued. "I also got a knife thrown at my face. I'm keeping it now, by the way."

"You're telling me Themis went to West without even clocking in just to kill a vigilante and hurt you in the process?" Tommy hummed in agreement and Themis furrowed his eyebrows.

"I didn't come here to kill him, I was looking for his partner." Wilbur hummed in disbelief and Ranboo moved the cloth away from Tommy's nose.

"Come back, I'm waking up The Angel. We need to review your hero license." Themis huffed and walked off, probably going back to the tower. Tommy looked at Ranboo, who threw away the blood covered cloth and got another chunk from the sign. "Is the vigilante still there?"

"Yeah, he is." Wilbur sighed and Tommy heard a door open.

"Are either of you hurt?" Tommy looked Ranboo up and down, not seeing any major injuries.

"I am but it doesn't look like he is. Lucky bastard." Ranboo smiled and pulled on his body suit enough to show Tommy a large cut on his bicep. "Never mind, not so lucky."

"Not so lucky. Would you like medical help?" Tommy looked at Ranboo, who shrugged and shook his head.

"He'll be fine, I think. We both will. I only called you because Themis was being a bitch about it." Wilbur hummed and knocked on a door. Tommy yawned and Ranboo pulled him into a half hug.

"Alright, have that vigilante escort you home, ok? Stay safe." Tommy made a noise of agreement and hung up the phone. He felt lightheaded and his nose hurt like hell. Tommy put his phone away and Ranboo sighed.

"What are you doing here without your suit?" Tommy rolled his eyes and grabbed the cloth from Ranboo, balling it up and pressing it against Ranboo's cut. Ranboo hissed in pain and tried backing up, but Tommy grabbed his shoulder and held him in place.

"Oh yeah, start bitching at me why don't ya. Why did you two fight?" Ranboo sighed and Tommy pulled Ranboo towards the alley he dumped his suit in. Tommy moved Ranboo's hand to hold the cloth himself while Tommy picked up his suit (and his new weapon).

"He was looking for you and asked me where you were, so I told him it was none of his business and he got mad so I asked why he wanted to know and he said he wanted to know what the big secret that's being kept from him is so I told him to fuck off and never talk to you again. He punched me in the face so I threw a sign at him and he didn't like it." Tommy gave Ranboo a weird look and rolled his eyes, deciding he didn't care anymore.

"Well, good luck with the 'never talk to him again' part. I'm not enforcing that and he's sure as hell not going to listen to you. I'll give him hell about all of this but, don't aggravate him." Ranboo sighed and nodded, agreeing with Tommy. "And if you do aggravate him again, call me. You got lucky this time, he's cool with me but he's still deadly."

"Yeah no kidding. Come on, let's get moving." Tommy nodded and they walked home, both still bleeding.

"You mean to tell me, that you snuck out to find the vigilante you befriended, and instead almost killed his partner because they didn't want you talking to him?" Technoblade sighed and rubbed his eyes. Damn Tommy, straight to hell with him. "Well, yes but-" "Not only that, you hurt our worker in the process, who has every right to be furious at you and get your license revoked for your irresponsible behavior?"

"Phil, really it's not as big of a deal as it seems." Phil slammed his hands down on the table, making Wilbur jump. Phil scowled at Technoblade and took a deep breath.

"You will not be going out on patrol for 2 weeks, and if I find out you have, your license will be revoked for as long as I see fit." Technoblade groaned and face planted into the table. Wilbur yawned and gave Phil a thumbs up when he looked to him for reassurance. Phil had a hard time punishing his kids.

"I still can't believe you befriended a vigilante, of all things!" Technoblade huffed and looked up at Phil. Phil looked raging mad and Technoblade knew he wasn't in a good position.

"It's for good reason though, I think he's behind the sleep flying." Phil paused and his expression changed to shock. Even Wilbur seemed to wake up more at that.

"How would he be behind that?" Technoblade took a deep breath and ran his fingers through his hair.

"He has connections. I'm talking at least 5 people on his side and from what I've gathered they don't know each other. Well, not all of them, but one of them can erase people's memories." Phil sighed and rubbed his eyes. "At first I was just getting close to him so I could find out more but I'm coming up with nothing. All I know is that he gets you to go willingly and he has someone that erases your memory and knocks you out. I don't know how you get there, I don't know why he calls you there, I don't know how he calls you there, I don't know how to stop him. If I so much as bring it up to him, he could erase my memory of it and we'd be back to square one." Phil hummed and nodded.

"I see. You're still grounded though. Wilbur, show me that camera feed." Wilbur stood up and walked into his office, Phil following closely behind him. Technoblade hid his face in his hands and took a deep breath. Wilbur sat at his desk and turned on his laptop, going to a hidden file and showing Phil a clip he'd saved to his laptop of Themis and the vigilante fighting a guy in West. It was only a few seconds long, but Phil saw all he needed to.

"Do you have footage of the fight he got into tonight?" Wilbur changed his screen to the cameras in West and went back to check. He couldn't find anything except shaky footage on the third camera, as though there were an earthquake.

"West doesn't have a lot of cameras so I didn't think I would. He'll have to file a patrol report and we'll have to say we sent him out to West to check on Tommy and he got distracted." Phil nodded and ruffled Wilbur's hair.

"Ok, back to bed now Will." Wilbur turned off his laptop and went back to his room. Phil left the office and walked over to Technoblade, who was still sat at the table. He brushed a few strands of Technoblade's hair behind his ear and took off Technoblade's earrings. Technoblade jumped and he started breathing quickly. "Just for the rest of the night, they need to be repaired." Technoblade nodded and Phil rubbed his back soothingly.

"I'll be in my office if you need me, try to get some sleep." Phil walked into his office, closing the door behind himself. He walked over to his desk and set the earrings down. He sat down and began working to repair the chipped emeralds.
