Chapter 11
"You can't sneak out! You're a hero, you can't just go missing! What if something happened to you?" Tommy crept further into the floor, trying to stay out of the bickering hero's sight. The Angel was scolding Themis. It was not what Tommy expected. Themis glanced at Tommy and The Angel turned around to look at Tommy. He looked frustrated. "Tommy, if you pulled a stunt like this it'd be fine, but please agree with me that Themis can not stay out all night and ignore his phone calls!" The Angel looked almost pleading, and Tommy felt a bit bad.
"I wasn't ignoring you, I was asleep. Just because you answer the phone all the time doesn't mean everyone else does." The Angel sighed and tilted his head at Tommy. Tommy took a deep breath, reminding himself what his position here is.
"I mean, yeah, you shouldn't have snuck out." The Angel's face brightened and he looked back at Themis, grinning proudly. Themis pouted at Tommy as The Angel went back to scolding him. Wilbur walked out of his office and over to Tommy, standing beside him and watching the scene.
"They're annoying, aren't they?" Tommy shrugged and looked at Wilbur. He looked exhausted and his hair was a mess.
"I think it's endearing. Not everyone has someone who worries about them." Wilbur looked at Tommy in concern and Tommy froze for a second. "I didn't mean myself, man. I meant in general." Wilbur hummed and looked back at Themis and The Angel. Tommy had Ranboo. Ranboo wouldn't have gone out of his way to get Tommy's attention if he didn't care about Tommy. Nor would he have gotten so worried about Tommy's leg. Ranboo was a good person.
"Well Tommy was out last night too! Be mad at him instead." Tommy stared at Themis in shock as The Angel looked back at him. Themis flipped Tommy off and Tommy gawked at him.
"YOU BITCH" The Angel looked shocked and Themis laughed loudly. Wilbur sighed from beside him.
"Themis, I'm not even going to ask how you know that. It also doesn't matter if he went out because he's not a hero. And Tommy," Tommy looked at Wilbur and gulped nervously at the chastising look Wilbur had. "What you do in your free time is none of our business, so if Themis tries to rat you out again, smack him." Tommy grinned widely and nodded. Wilbur smiled and patted Tommy's shoulder. Tommy's hands curled into fists at the gesture. The Angel sighed and rubbed his temple.
"Tommy, do you have an idea for your office?" Tommy bit his lip and sucked in air through his teeth. He didn't have a goddamn clue. Damn The Angel and his questions.
"I did not think of that." Themis snorted and Wilbur sighed. Tommy smiled sheepishly and shrugged. "I'll figure it out as we go." Wilbur shrugged and nodded, seemingly satisfied with the answer.
"Sounds about right. It's not a big deal anyways but try to write down ideas when we're on our way. Speaking of, let's head out." Tommy nodded and Wilbur walked to the elevator, Tommy following behind. When Tommy got in the elevator and turned around, he was shocked to see The Angel and Themis following them.
"You guys coming too?" They got situated in the elevator and Themis nodded.
"Yup." The Angel nodded and Wilbur hit the button for the first floor.
"Do you guys not have better things to do?" Themis snorted and The Angel sighed.
"We're coming along to get out of doing the other things. NotFound is being annoying." Themis nodded in agreement with The Angel and Wilbur sighed fondly.
"They do this all the time, don't worry. If they ever bother you while you're working, don't be afraid to tell them to piss off." Tommy nodded and hummed. It made sense why Wilbur's birthday was the password to The Angel's phone. It was because Wilbur worked for him. Tommy had no clue how he didn't make that connection earlier.
The elevator door opened and they got out, the trio leading Tommy to a parking lot. Tommy did not expect them to be taking a car, somehow. Tommy was a bit slow as of recent. Wilbur got in the driver's seat with The Angel in the passenger seat. Themis got in behind Wilbur and Tommy was behind The Angel. Tommy grit his teeth while getting in the car, the back of the seat pressing painfully on his back. Themis looked at him weird when he was trying to get his seatbelt on without moving his shoulders too much.
"Have you ever been in a car?" Tommy looked at Themis and huffed, finally buckling and trying to get comfortable. Wilbur started the car and they were off.
"Yes, I have." Themis hummed and shrugged, looking out his window.
"I mean you walk everywhere and you come from West so, I was just curious. You can relax, y'know." Tommy tensed up as they hit a small bump, using his elbow to keep himself away from the back of the seat. He didn't realize his discomfort was so obvious.
"Piss off." Themis looked at him and Tommy looked out the window. Wilbur chuckled and Tommy watched the buildings pass. Not many people in North walked, it seemed. Made sense, the rich bastards. Tommy stood out from them by a lot, and even Wilbur looked closer to being from East. Tommy didn't know why the cities were separated by economic standing. It was weird but Tommy didn't normally question it. It was just how things were.
"Tommy, any ideas thus far?" Tommy jumped at hearing his name and cursed under his breath at the reminder. He pulled out his phone and went to Tubbo's contact, deciding to just write the list there.
"A few." Tommy wrote down to get a monitor, a notepad, a minifridge, a filing cabinet, a bookshelf, some plants, a whiteboard, some picture frames, paper clips, paper, and some pens and pencils. Maybe a very fuzzy carpet too so he can just lay down and relax. Tommy wrote down a carpet.
"That's more than a few." Tommy looked up and saw Themis looking over his shoulder at his phone. Tommy shoved Themis's face back to his side of the car and turned his phone off.
"I'm just cool like that. Got everything I'll need written down." Themis huffed and smirked.
"You forgot dry erase markers." Tommy turned his phone back on and looked through his list, becoming frustrated when he realized Themis was right. Tommy wrote it down and turned his phone back off.
"Shut up. I didn't ask you." Themis chuckled and Tommy looked out his window again.
"Tommy, you're being very rude to Themis. He do something wrong?" Tommy bit his lip and sighed. He wasn't a vigilante harmlessly poking fun at his friend, he was a worker being a dick to his employer. He'd need to see the difference at some point, might as well start early.
"No, sorry. Been a bit since I've been in a professional setting." The car was silent and Tommy took the silence as a queue to stop talking. Tommy rested his elbow on the door and rested his head in his hand, regretting it a moment later when the car stopped suddenly and Tommy was slammed into the back of the seat. Tommy gasped in pain and shock and looked at Wilbur, who was cursing out a car in front of him that'd turned sharply without putting their blinker on. Tommy leaned forward and rested his head on the seat in front of him, putting his hand on his shoulder.
"You ok Tommy?" Tommy nodded at Themis's question and closed his eyes tightly. His back ached horribly and Tommy fought the instinct to hide his wings. The Angel took a deep breath.
"Sorry. Your wings ok?" Tommy looked up at Wilbur and saw Wilbur looking at The Angel, who was also leaned forward a bit. At least Wilbur wasn't talking to him.
"Fine. Maybe don't tailgate anymore though." Wilbur rolled his eyes and they were moving again. Themis was still staring at Tommy.
"I wasn't tailgating them, we were going 50 miles an hour." The Angel leaned back in his seat again and sighed heavily. Tommy copied the motion, instead keeping his elbow against the seat to keep himself away from it.
"Well, then stay far enough away to be able to react in time to not do that." Wilbur sighed and nodded.
"Themis, you asked if Tommy was ok? What happened?" Tommy bit his lip and rested his head on the back of the seat, closing his eyes and taking deep breaths. His hand was still on his shoulder.
"Well, I'm going to assume that the burns he talked about at his interview are on his back." Tommy glanced at Themis and saw him staring at him. Still. It was kind of creepy.
"Oh, shit. Sorry Tommy." Tommy looked at Wilbur and sighed. Tommy relaxed a bit and forced a smile.
"All good boss man." Wilbur smiled slightly and Tommy went back to looking out his window. At least Themis figured it was the burns that were bothering him. They finally came to a stop around 20 minutes later. IKEA, what a wonderful place for a couple of heroes and two nobodies to get lost in.
"Alright stay together. Nobody wander off alone." Everyone nodded at The Angel's instructions as they got out of the car. It was pretty self explanatory in Tommy's eyes but he figured they had a habit of wandering. They made their way into the store and got about half the things on Tommy's list, and a few more that The Angel or Wilbur insisted he have, before they realized that Themis was missing.
"I swear, I need to keep a leash or at least a tracker on him. Maybe that's what I should do." Tommy bit his lip and followed behind The Angel and Wilbur. The Angel was going on and on about how Themis never listens to him, almost in the way a father would his son. It was kind of funny, but also really annoying. Tommy spotted Themis a bit away reading a book and walking through an isle and crept over to him, not telling The Angel or Wilbur where he was going because, why not. They weren't paying attention to where he was going anyways.
"Hi." Themis flinched and turned around to look at Tommy, smiling afterwards.
"Hey kid. Where are the other two?" Tommy pointed in the direction they went and smirked.
"They're looking for you. They don't know I left them yet." Themis chuckled and grinned.
"How about we get a cart and get the rest of the stuff you need ourselves. Then we can call them and ask what they're still doing in here." Tommy laughed and nodded excitedly, happy to follow along with Themis's mischief.
"ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?" Tommy and Themis started laughing loudly and ran further into the building, making their way around it to get to the front without being seen. They succeeded, both of them having to turn their phones on silent at the barrage of texts and calls from Wilbur and The Angel. Tommy did respond to Wilbur though, telling him that he found Themis and that they were avoiding them, making sure to include that it was Themis's idea. Wilbur said he'd join in but The Angel was walking behind him and watching him like a hawk. Tommy laughed and showed Themis the message, then they got the idea for Wilbur to be their spy. Wilbur told them what part of the store he and The Angel were in, and they'd avoid the two. It was a lot of fun.
"Ok, now we just need the bookshelf. Hey, what's a good nickname for The Angel? It's just so basic and repetitive to call him that." Themis hummed and shrugged.
"I mean, old man works too. He hates it though, I don't recommend it. There's also crow father. That's probably worse than The Angel though." Tommy nodded and looked around the isle they were in. He was so lucky to have ran off with Themis. Now he didn't have to push the cart. He wouldn't have been able to, it's pretty heavy now. They got the smaller things early on so that they wouldn't be pushing around a ton of weight for as long.
"How long has it been since someone's used that office?" Themis was quiet for a bit and Tommy looked at him, noticing the shift in mood. Tommy felt a bit bad about asking the obviously sensitive question.
"Few years. Nobody's even been in there since." Tommy nodded and looked at his phone, getting Wilbur's update on where they were. Tommy didn't want to pry but he was really curious on why it wasn't used anymore.
"Why so long?" Themis took a deep breath and stopped in front of a bunch of boxes of bookshelves.
"Pick one." Tommy sighed and looked through the bookshelves, deciding that Themis wasn't going to answer his question and that it was best to move on. Tommy chose one and Themis put it in the cart. For someone without a strength ability, he was really strong. He could probably kill Tommy if he wanted to. Tommy and Themis walked to the checkout counters and Tommy texted Wilbur where they were. They got through checkout and Tommy checked his phone again, noticing Wilbur sent a text 13 minutes ago saying 'HE FOUND OUT HE'S ON HIS WAY RUN'. Tommy looked around and saw The Angel storming towards them. Wilbur was behind him with the cart trying to keep up and motioning for Tommy to run. Tommy slapped Themis's shoulder, getting his attention and pointing at The Angel. Themis went pale and started running with the cart, leaving Tommy to catch up. Tommy ran after him and by the time Themis got to the car, the car unlocked. Themis looked back at Tommy and grinned. Tommy was a bit confused when he caught up to Themis and Themis was still looking at the entrance. Tommy looked over and saw Wilbur running to them. He was a lot slower than they were. Themis started putting things in the trunk, then when he ran out of room he glanced around and made a small portal in his hands and put the rest of the stuff in the portal. Tommy only noticed him doing it from the corner of his eye while he was talking excitedly with Wilbur.
"How did you get away from him?" Wilbur was catching his breath and laughing at the same time, which didn't work out that well.
"I hid a packet of pens in his pocket so he got stopped by security and then shoved the cart at him and told him to check out." Tommy laughed loudly and high-fived Wilbur.
"You legend! Fuck, you gotta go running more often though man, you're slow as hell." Wilbur laughed and nodded, taking the empty cart from Themis and walking it over to cart return. Themis closed the trunk and fist bumped Tommy.
"I'd call that a successful shopping trip. Wilbur and I haven't done that in years." Themis chuckled and looked to where Wilbur went. Tommy stared at Themis in awe.
"You and Wilbur used to do this?" Themis nodded and smiled, looking back at Tommy.
"Yeah. We put the last one through it too. I mean, we all snuck off at the same time and we all told each other where The Angel was instead of one spy but, it was so similar. You remind me of him a lot." Themis's look was one of mournful reminiscing, and Tommy figured he was talking about their last intern. Tommy shivered at the thought of what might've happened to the guy for Themis of all people to be upset about his absence. Wilbur walked back over and placed a hand on Themis's shoulder, Themis reacting immediately and twisting Wilbur's arm. Wilbur let out a yelp of pain and Themis chuckled, letting go.
"Weakling." Wilbur rubbed his wrist and glared at Themis.
"You're just insulting me to avoid acknowledging that reaction." Themis huffed and rolled his eyes.
"You're just calling me out to avoid acknowledging how weak you are." Wilbur smirked and smacked Themis's shoulder.
"Whatever you say. Now stop sulking, it doesn't look good on you." Tommy looked between the two and turned around, looking at the entrance of ikea. The Angel was making his way to them and did not look too pleased.
"Hey, how much trouble did you get in last time for sneaking off in a store?" Tommy looked back at Themis and Themis looked at The Angel, sighing.
"Oh. That's why you're sulking." Tommy raised an eyebrow and looked at Wilbur.
"Wasn't allowed alone on patrol for three weeks. It would've been one week but Wilbur pinned all the blame on me." Tommy nodded and hummed.
"And doing that worked?" Themis looked at Tommy, eyes wide. He shook his head and Tommy grinned. Wilbur grinned and walked over to The Angel, who was almost there.
"Daaaaaad," "NO" "Themis put Tommy up to it and obviously I had to help Tommy. We're victims here, don't be mad at us." The Angel laughed and Tommy walked over, walking next to The Angel. He'd evaluate Wilbur calling The Angel dad later, it was suck up time.
"Yeah, Themis texted and was like "hey come sneak off with me or I'm stealing half of your supplies. And delete this message or I'm stealing all of it" and obviously I didn't want my supplies stolen so I had to leave." Themis stared at Tommy, it almost looked like he was hurt by the betrayal.
"Yeah! Tommy texted me about it and asked me for help because he didn't want to get in trouble and then we decided we'd tell you after the fact." The Angel laughed again and Wilbur grinned stupidly. The Angel put the things in the cart in the middle seat and gave the cart to Themis.
"Go put this away while I talk to these two." Themis frowned and nodded, walking the cart to the cart return. The Angel turned to them and smiled. "I'm going to say that that didn't happen, and you put Tommy up to sucking up to me." Wilbur gawked and scoffed, putting his hand on his chest and staring at The Angel in feign hurt.
"I am appalled. I would never do such a thing." The Angel crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow. "It was technically Tommy's idea to suck up to you." Tommy froze and looked at Wilbur.
"What the fuck man!? No, technically it was past you's idea." The Angel laughed and Themis came back. The Angel looked at Themis and hummed.
"Wilbur, no music for a week." Wilbur looked shocked and Themis grinned. "Themis, I'll be patrolling with you for two weeks since you were the first to run off." Themis groaned loudly and The Angel looked at Tommy. Tommy was a bit nervous as The Angel just stared at him. Eventually, The Angel sighed and shrugged. "I've got nothing. Just don't do this again, ok?" Tommy smiled and nodded quickly. Wilbur and Themis both protested and Tommy laughed, until The Angel made a chirping noise and all three of them shut up. Themis, Wilbur, and The Angel all looked at Tommy, seemingly shocked. Tommy looked between them and raised an eyebrow.
"What?" Wilbur grinned and looked at Themis. The Angel huffed in shock and smiled widely.
"I wasn't expecting you to be quiet at that. It works on them because I do it so often they're used to it. It shouldn't have worked on you though." Tommy froze and smiled nervously. He had to fight the instinct to put his wings away again.
"Wait, wait, Tommy, do you have any avians in your family?" Tommy bit his lip and shook his head.
"I don't think so." Wilbur grinned widely and looked at The Angel. "You guys are being weird. What is it? Why're you all smiley?" The Angel took a deep breath and smiled calmly at Tommy.
"Don't mind them, they're assuming things. Let's head back to HQ and get your office set up and you can have the rest of the day off." Tommy nodded and they got in the car. Tommy pressed his elbow against the back of his seat and looked out the window, watching the scenery pass. Themis was sat up front with Wilbur this time, and Tommy could hear hushed murmuring from the front seats. He tried to pay attention but he was fairly tired, so instead he tuned them out and relaxed.
"Boys, quiet down." Themis looked back at The Angel and he motioned at Tommy, who was asleep. Themis smiled and turned back around, facing the road again.
"He was a good choice." Wilbur and Phil hummed in agreement and Technoblade sighed contently. Something was making Technoblade feel uncomfortable, though.
"You said he reminded you of.. him." Technoblade tensed slightly and Phil made a confused noise. "I just, I understand that you miss him, but, do you need to go back to therapy?" Technoblade was silent for a while. He never needed therapy but it did help. He was fine without it. Tommy did remind Technoblade of him though, maybe it'd be good to go again. Now Technoblade was just confused.
"I don't know." Technoblade heard Phil take a deep breath and saw Wilbur nod slowly out of the corner of his eye.
"That's alright. You don't have to know right away. Just, please go if you start to notice something off or if we think you should, ok?" Technoblade nodded and leaned back in his seat. Last time he'd only gone because they thought he needed it. He hadn't thought he needed it but his therapist said they were glad he came in because he was doing 'piss poorly'. Technoblade always felt fine but normally that was when something was wrong with him.
"On a lighter note, either Tommy is a bird or he has a bird friend and it's instinct for him like it is for us." Technoblade hummed and got an idea.
"You guys remember that vigilante in South that had wings?" Wilbur nodded and Phil sighed.
"The one that's been missing for the past seven years?" Technoblade nodded and shrugged.
"He said he had a friend in South." Wilbur sighed and looked at Technoblade.
"Yeah but his friend is still in school, not to mention, still around and not missing." Technoblade hummed and shrugged.
"It'd make sense why he didn't say about him though. Wouldn't want to sell his friend out." The car went silence for a bit and Technoblade yawned. He was sleeping less and less the more that vigilante was around. Now he has to be awake during the day too because of Tommy. They had similar hair but they styled it differently and Tommy's hair was shorter. Both had blue eyes too. Tommy was just a bit too short and less muscular, so maybe they were distant twins or something. Or they were just similar. Or the same person. It'd be a bit too convenient for him to have become their worker though. Technoblade would just mention Phil's 'sleep flying' in front of him. Any reaction? Definitely the vigilante. The phone call last night was weird though, there's no reason one of his partners should know that he had Tommy's phone number.
"I don't want to haul this shit up to his office." Phil laughed quietly and Technoblade smiled. Wilbur complaining was always funny to them, just because of the voice he uses when he complains.
"I'll just put it in the portal, it's fine." Wilbur smiled and Technoblade yawned again.
"I was going to ask later, but how did you know that Tommy was out last night? He's asleep and you're obviously tired, so what happened?" Technoblade took a deep breath and recounted the night's events, making up a plausible story.
"I got a call from his phone. It was a vigilante, demanding that I give them Captain Puffy's address because they needed a healer. I figured since they had Tommy's phone they knew Tommy was close to me and would threaten him so I just told them to meet Captain Puffy somewhere and they sent Tommy home. It was around 3 in the morning." Wilbur took a deep breath and Technoblade heard Phil shuffle in his seat.
"What about after that?" Technoblade bit his lip and shrugged.
"I told Captain Puffy what happened and where to go, and then I met her out there so she wouldn't be going alone. They really did need a healer, but they wouldn't answer my questions and after they were healed they left. We couldn't catch them and they were on the younger side so I didn't want to hurt them. Then I stayed the night at Captain Puffy's just in case anything happened." Wilbur nodded and Tommy sighed heavily. Technoblade smiled and looked out his window. Wilbur smacked his shoulder a few minutes later and gestured to the back seat. Technoblade looked back there and saw Tommy asleep with his head on Phil's shoulder, and Phil smiling and looking out the window, as still as possible. Technoblade grinned at Wilbur and adjusted himself in his seat. It'd been a good day, and they even still had 2 more hours with Tommy. Of course next week he'd get his schedule and actually start working, but Technoblade appreciated the time they had to just get to know each other.
The car came to a stop 30 minutes later and Technoblade got out first, going to the trunk and shoving all of the furniture into his portal. Everyone else got out and Technoblade closed the trunk, going over to the drivers side. Tommy came around the car rubbing his eyes and looking at the trunk.
"What about all the shit?" Themis almost laughed at Tommy's voice, it being higher pitch than normal. Wilbur cooed at Tommy and The Angel patted Tommy's shoulder.
"Themis already brought it up mate. We didn't want you to have to watch the mess that was bringing it up." Tommy looked at Themis and Themis nodded agreement. Tommy yawned and nodded.
"Ok. Sorry, didn't sleep well I guess." Wilbur smiled and wrapped his arm around Tommy's shoulder, dragging Tommy off towards the front room to go to the elevator.
"You're fine Tommy. Don't even worry about it." Tommy nodded and Themis and The Angel followed the two to the elevator. When they got to their floor, The Angel demanded they take a lunch break and dragged Tommy and Wilbur off to the kitchen so Themis could get everything out of the portal without being seen doing it. The office looked a lot more lively after they got everything situated, and Themis felt more comfortable with someone being in the office after Tommy refused to throw out the three things the last one had to his name.
Themis was shocked when he heard that Tommy went missing.
