Chapter 31

Ahhh! It's here. This is one of my fav chapters in this story for some reason. I just had so much fun writing it. I think it's so crucial to the story and it has my SKZ bias in it and the hints of my fav SKZ ship (longtime readers of time will know what I'm talking about lol). Anyway, with that said, let's get into the chapter. I hope you enjoy!

Then: Daegu

"What do you want?" Wonpil asks from where he stands in the small kitchen in front of an open fridge.

"Coffee," Hyunjin says from where he is admiring his nails on a wide couch shaded royal blue. He is positioned in front of a burning fireplace that casts shadows along the walls. The only light comes from the flame, all the other lights in the rather extravagant apartment flat left off. The entire area looks like it belongs to someone rich. The walls a beautiful deep black blue wallpaper with similar shaded velvet drapes covering grand windows. The doors are heavy wood and colored with black paint. There are desks and side tables that are made of the same material where beautiful pieces of collectibles sit in all their shining glory. Hyunjin runs a hand through his hair removing the hair tie that has kept his long blonde locks out of his face. He ruffles his hair a bit and sighs as it falls onto his lower neck and back. The young man is garbed in a rather over the top outfit. He has a loose fitting, black button down underneath a velvety black coat that looks like it's from the Victorian era that has silver trimmings. His similarly shaded pants are tight against his legs and hold his figure nicely. He appears rather comfortable in his clothes even though it is a bit much considering he isn't going anywhere. Unlike Hyunjin, Wonpil is dressed in a relaxed manner. He has a flannel on top of a t-shirt and dark jeans. The hunter walks back into the living room as quietly as he can. He has a bottle of coffee under his armpit and his other hand holds a soda can. He enters without making any noise. He creeps up behind Hyunjin, who doesn't seem to notice the hunter standing very close behind him. Wonpil reaches with his free hand for a gun that sits in a holster on his waist. He slowly pulls it out and points it at the back of Hyunjin's head. He has a straight look on his face as he slowly unlocks the safety so it doesn't make a loud click and fingers the trigger. "Thanks for letting me tag along on your hunt," Hyunjin says suddenly, beginning to turn his head around so he can directly speak to the hunter. Wonpil quickly slips his gun back into its holster before Hyunjin can turn around completely and walks around to the side of the couch. He forces a smile on his face and nods his head, "Thank you for helping with it. I don't think I could've finished the job without your help."

Hyunjin smiles back and nods his head, "Glad I could be some help." Wonpil passes the coffee to the boy before taking a seat next to him. Hyunjin takes it and uncaps it, shifting a tiny bit away from Wonpil in the least obvious manner as he can. He brings the drinks to his mouth and slowly sips, discreetly eyeing Wonpil warily.

Now

"I came to Daegu after reading about a weird death that involved a necklace that burned someone's neck to the point that it melted their windpipe," Felix reads, "Gruesome..." The two sit in their car snacking on some kimbap from a plastic container sitting on the dash of the car. Chan nods as he chews, grabbing his water and sipping from it. "He looked into it a bit and found that the necklace was actually cursed," Felix says, "More specifically, the gem inside of it that he found in some lore was stolen from a god who cursed it to bring strife to whoever holds it. Wonpil said that he located the necklace without much problems and destroyed it."

"Okay then," Chan states, "Well, this doesn't seem like something that could have some weird twist or something bad."

Felix nods in agreement, "Compared to all the other entries, this is probably the tamest. I mean it's just a cursed object."

"And Wonpil said he got rid of it, so we don't really have anything to worry about," Chan says, "We came all the way to Daegu for this...we might as well have just skipped this entry."

"We're here now we might as well just check all the boxes," Felix says, "Make sure that this case really is as clean cut as we think."

"Fine by me," Chan says, "Let me finish this kimbap first."

"You and food," Felix sighs.

Chan picks up another piece of food and shoves it into his mouth, "Hey, we paid for this. We shouldn't waste any of it."

"If it makes you feel better about shoving food into yourself then we'll go with that," Felix comments, leaning back in his seat and reaching for his phone to play with. Chan pouts, but continues to eat, not that fazed by his cousin's words.

The cousins walk into the police station which appears fairly calm. They make their way over to a young man at the front desk, who flashes them a smile. "How can I help you?" He asks.

"We're with the NIS," Chan answers, flashing his badge, "We're just checking up on a case that one of my fellow agents handled a couple years back in this town."

The young cop's eyes widen, "Oh, are you talking about Agent Lee and the necklace case?"

"Exactly," Felix says, "Do you have files on it?"

"We do," The cop answers, "But, it's not much. Agent Lee pretty much took over the case when he got here. He took the necklace right from evidence and everything. A couple of days later, he came back to say that we should announce the case as an accident and that the NIS would be in touch, but we never heard from him again."

"Well, maybe, you can just tell us what happened?" Chan suggests, "You seem to know a lot about the case."

The cop shrugs, "I know some stuff. I'm always around, but since I'm a rookie people don't really take me seriously."

"We're sorry to hear that," Felix says, "But, we've all been in your shoes and I promise it'll get better. Now, can you tell us anything about the case?"

"Well, a couple months ago, we got a report from someone about finding their neighbor's dead body in the middle of the lawn. The victim was a woman named Bongcha-ssi. The neighbor found a pool of melted flesh and bone as well as a necklace lying where her neck should be," The cop says, "But, you probably already know that. Anyway, we took the necklace into evidence and sent Bongcha-ssi to the morgue to be examined by the mortician. That's around when Agent Lee came in and took over. I don't really know more than that."

"What about Agent Lee?" Chan asks, "Was there anything that you noticed about him or something that stood out to you when he came to the station?"

"Um, not really?" The man says, "Well, I guess there's one thing. He would always talk to some guy right outside the station after coming to talk to us."

"A guy?" Felix questions.

The cop nods, "I don't know his name or anything cause he never came in, but he had long blonde hair and he was wearing this over the top outfit." Chan's eyebrows raise in surprise at this and he nods his head. "Alright, well, thank you," Chan says, "We may be back if we need to touch base."

"Okay," The young man says, "Have a great day." Chan smiles before turning around and heading towards the door. Felix follows behind him with a confused look on his face, "Do you know who the guy Wonpil was talking to is?"

"I have a hunch," Chan says as they exit the police station side by side. He digs his hand into his pocket and pulls out his phone. He taps at the screen a couple of times before tilting it so that it is in between both himself and Felix. The freckled hunter glances down at the screen and frowns in confusion, "Why are you calling Jisung?"

"You'll see," Chan says as the phone rings.

"Hey, hyung," Jisung says as he answers the call, "What's up?"

"Do you know where Hyunjin is?" Chan asks.

"Why would I know where he is?" Jisung fires back with his own question.

"Who's Hyunjin?" Felix says, "I remember his name. You said it before."

"Is that you, Lix?" Jisung questions.

"Hi, Sung," Felix says.

Jisung beams, "How are you doing?" Felix opens his mouth to answer, but is cut off by his impatient cousin. "Hey, Jisung," Chan coughs, "We're kinda in the middle of something, so do you know where he is or not."

"Is he in trouble?" Jisung questions warily.

"Hopefully not," Chan answers, "We're just checking up on an entry in Wonpil's journal that we have reason to believe that Hyunjin may have been a part of."

"You don't think that Wonpil hurt him, do you?" Jisung asks.

"I don't know, Jisung," Chan frowns, "You talk to him more than I do..."

"Not recently," Jisung states, "He's been ignoring me..."

"Well, I'm sorry that you got into another lover's quarrel," Chan huffs, "Where is he, Jisung?"

Jisung sighs, "Last I heard from him, he was in Daegu." Felix's eyes widen at their friend's words and glances at Chan. The blonde hunter nods his head and runs a hand through his hair, "Do you have a specific address?"

"I'll text it to you," Jisung says, "If you see him, tell him to give me a call..."

"Will do," Chan says, "Thanks, Jisung." With that said, he ends the call and slips the phone back into his pocket. "So, you want to tell me who Hyunjin is so I can process it before meeting him face to face?" Felix asks.

Chan nods as he walks towards the car, "He's another friend."

"And what is he?" Felix asks, "Shifter? Demigod? Siren?"

"He's a witch," Chan answers.

Felix's nose scrunches up, "Ew."

"Don't say that in front of him," Chan says, "Please..."

"Hey, I can't help it, witches use some weird things to do some weird stuff," Felix says, "They give me the chills..."

"Well, I can assure you that Hyunjin will give you a different kind of chills," Chan murmurs.

Felix blinks, "What is that supposed to mean?"

"You'll see," Chan says as he unlocks the car doors and slips into the vehicle.

──────●◎●──────

"Channie!" Hyunjin exclaims as he opens the door to his apartment flat. He leaps forward, wrapping his arms around the aussie's neck and burying his face into his neck. "Hi, Jinnie," Chan says with a soft smile, gently patting his back, "How are you?"

"Good," Hyunjin chirps, taking a step back, "Who is this?" He runs a hand through his hair, fixing it a bit so that it's tucked neatly behind his ears. He is garbed in a form fitting white from head to toe. His pants hug his legs and there's a sheer white material wrapped around his waist that looks like a skirt. He has a medium length jacket with a rose gold shaded chunky belt around his stomach area. Felix blinks a couple of times in surprise, finally understanding what Chan meant by a different type of chills. "You're pretty," Felix mutters.

Hyunjin grins, "Thanks, so are you."

"Uh," Felix stutters, turning red.

"I told you that you wouldn't be finding Hyunjin gross," Chan whispers, "This is my cousin, Jinnie."

"Ah, Lee Felix, right?" Hyunjin says, "It's nice to officially meet you."

"Y-you too," Felix says with an awkward smile.

"So, what are you two doing here? And how come you didn't call to tell me you were back in Korea, Channie?" Hyunjin questions.

"We've been sort of busy," Chan says, "I didn't get the chance to give you a call. As to why we're here, well, we've been retracing Wonpil's journey that led to his death to find out exactly what happened. We stumbled across this case with a cursed necklace and the cops mentioned seeing someone that fit your description talking to Wonpil."

Hyunjin nods, "Come on in. I can explain more if you would like." The witch steps back inside of his flat and gestures for the hunters to enter. They do and their eyes flit around the expensively extravagant decorations of the area with intrigue. "Go ahead and sit in the living room," Hyunjin says, "I'll get us some drinks and snacks." The two hunters nod their heads and make their way over to the velvety couch as Hyunjin walks to the kitchen. Felix eyes the witch with a mix of amusement and curiosity. "Hyunjin is unlike any witch that I've ever met," Felix says.

Chan chuckles, "He's impressive isn't he."

"That's an understatement," Felix says, "I stumbled over my words in front of him, Chris. I don't do that..."

"Don't sweat it," Chan says, "We all did the same thing when we first met him. You should've seen Changbin's reaction."

"What did he do?" Felix asks.

"He ran," Hyunjin calls from the kitchen.

"Did he really?" Felix questions.

"Yup," Chan says, "It was hilarious."

"We tease him about it all the time," Hyunjin says, "He is a demon after all and he ran away from a little witch like me. I mean...I guess I am fairly powerful when it comes to witches, but still." He comes into the living room with a tray of drinks and cookies in his hands. He places it on the table and sits down on a large plush chair. "Oh, on the topic of our friends," Chan says, "Jisung told us to tell you that you should call him."

Hyunjin scoffs and rolls his eyes, "Stupid shifter. He knows exactly why I've been ignoring him."

"Why?" Felix questions. Chan eyes his cousin and shakes his head, trying to tell him that by asking that he has opened a whole can of worms. "It's a long story," Hyunjin says, "And I just am not in the mood to talk about Han Jisung today."

Chan lets out a breath of relief and mutters to his cousin, "You dodged a bullet."

"Huh?" Felix questions.

"When Jisung and Hyunjin are at odds, it's a mess," Chan says, "Usually, they get along fine, but other times they're nuts. Their relationship is what I would consider highly flammable..."

"Good to know," Felix murmurs.

"So, what do you want to know about the case I worked with Wonpil?" Hyunjin asks, picking up a cookie and biting it.

"Anything you're willing to tell us," Chan answers.

"Well, I read the same article that Wonpil did about the lady being burned," Hyunjin says, "I went to go check it out."

"You hunt?" Felix questions.

"Not really," Hyunjin says, "I just keep an eye out for cases like this that could be the doing of a witch. More often than not, it isn't. Although you hunters are always quick to point your fingers at my people..."

"That isn't true," Chan states,

"Isn't it, Channie?" Hyunjin questions, "First, you check for the cold spots, then the sulfur, and then the hex bags. You always check for the hex bags. Do not even deny it."

"Okay, okay," Chan says, "But, unexplainable deaths could be caused by witch spells."

"Could be, but usually isn't," Hyunjin says, "It is very unfair. These new witches give respectable ones like myself a bad name. That's why I've taken it upon myself to stop any witch case myself instead of letting hunters handle it. Anyway, that was the situation for this one. I thought that it may have been a curse placed by a vengeful witch, but it turned out to just be a cursed necklace."

"Wonpil said he destroyed it," Chan says, "Was that with the help of you? I know cursed objects aren't easy to get rid of."

Hyunjin nods, "I had a perfect spell for it and it did the trick. It was a rather simple job."

"Wow," Felix comments, "It's exactly like we thought. A clean cut easy job. Nothing foul like the other ones at all. I'm actually surprised. I thought Wonpil would've done something bad here as well."

"What do you mean do something bad?" Hyunjin questions.

Chan sighs, "Along this journey, we have found a lot of unfavorable things about my old friend. He did some horrible things to people who didn't deserve it. He went too far and it seemed like a common pattern with all the locations in his journal. Well, except for this one which is a nice breath of fresh air." Hyunjin frowns and leans back a bit. He sighs and looks at the hunters, "I don't want to rain on your parade, but something did happen..."

"Really?" Felix questions, "But, you said that you handled the necklace with no problem."

"We did," Hyunjin says, "This doesn't have to do with the hunt. It had to do with what happened after."

"After?" Chan asks in a confused tone.

Hyunjin nods, "I invited Wonpil back to my place for something to drink before heading back onto the road again. He volunteered to get drinks, so I waited in the living room for him. That's when he started to creep up on me with a gun."

"No," Chan says in a breathy tone.

"I was just as shocked as you," Hyunjin says, "I tried to remain calm and not act like I knew. After all, Wonpil was creeping up behind me so he was trying to do the deed without making it obvious. As you can see, he didn't end up shooting me. He changed his mind last second when I started to turn around. I was so sure that he was going to kill me sometime before the night ended but he just walked out the door like it was nothing."

"Are you sure, Hyunjin?" Chan questions, "Are you sure that he pulled a gun in you?"

Hyunjin nods, "I've been held at gunpoint before, Chan. I'm a witch. One that goes after his own kind. I don't have many friends."

"I just want to make sure you weren't mistaken or anything," Chan says, "What you're saying is a big deal."

"I know," Hyunjin says, "And I'm telling you that it is the truth. I know the feeling of someone coming after you with murderous intent. I felt it radiating off of him like the stench of alcohol."

"Why would Wonpil do that?" Felix asks, "I mean you two were friends and it's not like you did anything wrong. Did you?"

"Not to my knowledge," Hyunjin says, "I'm just as confused as you are, but I didn't really want to ask the man with the witch killing bullets in his back pocket why is he doing this."

"I don't believe it," Chan mutters.

"You still don't believe me?" Hyunjin questions.

"No, no, I believe you," Chan states, "It's just that I don't want to. There's no way that Wonpil could've done something this horrible. I mean he has done some things that are unlike him. He's done a lot of bad things, but not that bad. To point a gun at his own friend is just sickening. The fact that you two literally worked together on a hunt and then he was going to kill you. It's not right."

"It's messed up," Felix frowns, "Wonpil has stooped to an all-time low."

Hyunjin nods, "From what you've told me and my experience with him, he's definitely not the friend I made. Friends don't point guns at each other..."

"Are you okay?" Chan asks, "We've been like freaking out about why he did this when you actually got a weapon pointed at you. By someone you trusted and considered a friend no less..."

"I'm fine, Chan," Hyunjin says with a shaky smile, "I'm a strong person."

"Still," Chan says, "Even if you don't want to talk to me, you should talk to someone else. Go to Changbin. He'll listen. Hell, go to Jisung. I know you're mad at him, but whatever it is won't matter when you tell him what happens. He understands you. He always has." Hyunjin lets out a breath and slowly nods his head. The witch isn't falling apart. He is as strong as he says he is, but something like this shakes everyone up even the strongest. Sometimes it's best to just turn to someone. "What now?" Felix asks, "I'm kinda like hating Wonpil at the moment."

"So am I," Chan mutters, surprised at himself for even uttering the words. It's true though. Wonpil is his friend, but so is Hyunjin. The fact that his fellow hunter would betray someone that they have trusted and worked with for so long. The betrayal being holding a gun to the back of their head. It's just unforgivable. It truly is just something that Chan doesn't know if he can just brush to the side with an excuse. Just then, a phone starts to ring. Hyunjin slowly rises from his seat and walks over to the corner wall where a landline phone is sitting on a small table. The witch picks up the phone and brings it to his ear, "Hello?" The hunters watch as their friend speaks on the phone, his fair face contorting with annoyance as the other person on the line speaks. "You're kidding me," Hyunjin groans, "No...no....I'll handle it. Yeji was like a sister to me, she would've wanted me to watch out for her coven. Okay...I will...bye." With that said, he hangs up the phone and walks back over to the living room. "Is something wrong?" Felix asks.

"Oh, it's not a big deal," Hyunjin says, "I just have something to deal with."

"What?" Chan questions, "Need a hand?"

"It's witch business," Hyunjin says.

"We don't mind," Felix says, "Right, Chan?" The blonde nods his head and looks up at the witch, curious about what is the problem at hand.

Did you like it? Can you see why it's one of my favorite chapters? It feels like the perfect chapter too, especially since Halloween just passed. When I was assigning different Supernatural creatures to each of the SKZ characters, Hyunjin was going to be a witch automatically. It just made so much sense to me. I think it's just fitting. I could honestly write a whole spin off story of Hyunjin as a witch and going on hunts with his on and off shifter bf Jisung. I don't have any plans for that, but I could totally do it. With that said, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. We're learning more about Wonpil and we have more witchy business to deal with. I hope you look forward to the next chapter. If you could, I would appreciate it if you could vote, comment, follow me, add this story to your library and check out my full length Hyunsung story, Collision Course! I hope you have a great rest of your day and I'll see you next time!
