Chapter 25

Just as I said last week, I am posting again. This is the third update back to back! Anyway, this chapter is crazy one. I hope you all are ready for what's to come and please enjoy!

Then: Yeoncheon

"I'm fine, eomma," A woman with short hair says as she sits on her couch, "I've been seeing a counselor and doing my best to deal with it." She has her phone in her hand as she talks to her mom over speakerphone. She is garbed in a light pink shirt and faded blue pajama shorts. It's dark out and the moon is casting its light brightly through her windows. The room is fairly dark besides the natural light and an old lamp that casts an orangey hue. "I'm just worried," Her mother says, "You were so upset when he passed, Hyelim-ah." Hyelim sighs and glances at a picture frame hanging from the wall. It's a medium sized photo from a summer day where she stands beside a man with sunglasses on the top of his head and a wide toothy grin. "I'm trying my best to cope, eomma. It's just going to take some time," Hyelim says, "So, please, don't drive yourself crazy over worrying for me. I'll be okay."

"What type of mother would I be to not worry?" Her mom huffs over the line.

Hyelim smiles at this, "I love you, eomma."

"I love you too, Hyelim-ah..." Her mom says, "Take care of yourself, okay?"

"What did I say about worrying?" Hyelim questions.

"Yes, yes, silly girl, I'll stop now," Her mom says.

"Bye, eomma," Hyelim says,

"Goodbye," Her mom calls out before Hyelim ends the call. She sighs and places her phone on the couch beside her. She lets her head fall back as she stares at the ceiling. Her heart aches in her chest a bit, the pain of the loss of her fiancé hitting her hard. She lied to her mom. She is getting help and she's trying to get better, but it isn't going well. She still has a long way to go before she can get back to the way things were before. Hyelim isn't going to give up though. Her fiancé wouldn't want that for her. She has to keep going. She is going to continue living for his sake and for her own. Hyelim takes a deep breath before standing from the couch and making her way into the kitchen. She flicks on the light switch as she enters the room. She walks over to the fridge and opens it. Hyelim grabs a bottle of water before closing the fridge door. She twists open the bottle and sips from it. As she does, the lights within the kitchen begin to flicker. Hyelim eyebrows furrow as she glances up at the light bulb. What's happening? Is the power going out? Suddenly, the sounds of a soft shrieking starts to echo, so quiet that it can be passed off as wind. Hyelim whirls around in confusion, trying to identify the noise. It dies down after a while and Hyelim brushes it off as nothing. She closes up her water bottle and places it on the counter top. She makes her way towards the bathroom when she hears it again. This time it's louder and a lot sharper. It pierces her ears and she winces in pain. The shrieking becomes a howling scream and Hyelim staggers to the floor. She grips her ears and begins to yell out in pain. "Make it stop!" Hyelim exclaims. Her pleas fall to deaf ears as the screaming just increases in volume. "Ahhhhhhh!" Hyelim sobs as she staggers to her feet. She walks over to the side wall, still holding her head in her hands in an attempt to block out the noise. "Stop it," Hyelim says, slamming her head against the wall, "It's too much." She continues to bash her head against the wall which slowly becomes coated with red blood. The same liquid begins to trail down the sides of her face, but she doesn't even seem to notice. She just hits her head harder into the wall in an attempt to stop the loud screaming sound that seems to get louder and louder.

Now

"Are you sure you're okay to drive?" Chan asks from where he sits in the passenger's seat. The two have just finished grabbing a quick bite along their way to a location that Wonpil mentions in his journal visiting multiple times. Felix volunteered to drive, saying his cousin has been behind the wheel for far too long. "You ask this every time I volunteer to drive, Chris," Felix says.

"I know," Chan says, "I'm just worried."

"About me or your car?" Felix questions. Chan opens his mouth to answer, but then closes it a second later. Felix scowls at this and shakes his head. "I won't run into a tree," Felix says, "You don't need to worry about me denting your car."

"I-," Chan starts only to be cut off by Felix holding a hand up.

"It's okay," Felix says, "I know now where I am in regards to what is important to you." Chan sighs and leans back in his seat. Felix turns the wheel and makes his way down the road where there are a bunch of little shops along the street. Chan glances out the window as they pass them by, his eye catching one where there appears to be three people arguing in the front lawn. Two are men garbed in simple black pants and a short sleeved button up that remains open. The sun glints off of metal cuffs that are in both of their pockets. They're clearly cops and they seem to be intensely questioning a woman with long black hair that is wearing a gray checkered coat that reaches her lower thighs on top of a white blouse and faded blue jeans. She has an upset look on her face as the two men continue to heckle her. "Stop," Chan says.

"I haven't even been driving that long," Felix huffs, "You want to take over already."

"No, that's no it," Chan says, "Those people over there..." Felix glances over at where his cousin is looking and frowns. "What about them?" Felix questions.

"I don't know," Chan states, "But, we should find out."

"Chris, we can't just go up to them and ask what's happening," Felix says, "This has nothing to do with us."

"We wouldn't know if it does or not if we don't stop," Chan says, looking over at his cousin, "I have that feeling that this is something. We can't just drive off, Lix. Not until we've at least checked it out."

Felix sighs, "I hate you sometimes..." He turns the steering wheel so that he can park on the side near the small little building where the argument is taking place. "Are you a hundred percent sure you want to get involved in this?" Felix asks.

Chan nods, "If I can save lives by doing this, then there is no doubt about it."

"Okay," Felix says, even though he highly doubts there is anything about the situation going on between those people that has anything to do with supernatural hunters, he isn't going to let his cousin go into this alone. The two climb out of their car and make their way down the sidewalk. As they near the building, the voices of the people arguing become clearer as well as the large sign that sticks in the ground. The sign reads Grief Counseling, something that the cousins both notice by a quick shared glance, the same thought passing through both their heads. "What's going on?" Chan asks in a loud voice. The three bickering people turn to look at the approaching cousins. "Move along," One of the cops says, "There's nothing to see here."

"We came to speak to the counselor though," Felix says, "My cousin wants to make an appointment."

"You're just going to have to come back later," The other cop states.

"No, you can come right in," The woman says, "I am the counselor and I can get you penciled in for a session right away."

"Sunmi-ssi," The cops says, "We weren't done."

"But, I am," Sunmi says, "You've come here each time one of my patients has passed. I have given you the same answer every time. You just don't wish to accept it." With that said, she turns around and starts walking up the steps towards the door to her counseling center. She turns to look at the cousins and gestures for them to come in. Chan walks forward, passing by the two cops, and heads towards the door. "Oh, hyung, I left my phone in the car," Felix says, "I'll go get it and join you in a couple minutes." Chan nods as he slips into the building, leaving Felix with the two cops. The freckled hunter slowly turns around and starts to walk back to his car, but is stopped by one of the cops calling out to him. "You shouldn't let your cousin see that lady," The cop states.

"Why?" Felix questions.

"You don't know?" The other asks.

Felix shakes his head, "My cousin and I just moved into town. Why? Is she a bad counselor?"

"Who knows, but there's something up with her and her practice," The cop says, "We've been dealing with more suicides than ever these past few months. All victims were her patients who killed themselves in the same way."

"That could just be a coincidence," Felix says, "Grief is overwhelming."

"We know, but considering not a single one of her patients didn't end up bashing their brains out makes her highly suspicious," The other cop says, "We have reason to believe she has something to do with this and we will get evidence to her involvement. We're just warning you, but you do what you want and believe what you will. Most people in town know to stay away from Sunmi." With that said, the two cops turn around and head in the opposite direction. Felix purses his lips together and crosses his arms over his chest, wondering what exactly is going on here.

──────●◎●──────

Chan lets his eyes wander around the room as he enters. The decor and walls are mostly white with some gray hues and dark, mahogany purples. It's quiet inside except for the quiet piano music coming from the back room. "What's your name?" Sunmi asks as she heads towards a desk in an adjacent room.

"Bang Chan," He answers. He follows behind her into the room, looking around with curiosity.

"Nice to meet you, Bang Chan-ssi," Sunmi says, "My name is Lee Sunmi. If you don't mind me asking, who did you lose and when?"

Chan takes a deep breath and lets out a sigh. "A close friend," He answers, "It was just a couple of months ago and I'm not coping with it as well as I thought." Sunmi nods her head in understanding as she takes a seat on a chair tucked under the desk. She grabs a pen from a cup on the table and opens a planner that is off to the side. "What day and time work best for you?" Sunmi asks.

"Oh, whatever is fine," Chan says, "I'm sure that you have many other appointments. I apologize for just suddenly approaching you about this."

"No, no," Sunmi says, "Don't worry. I want to help, so I'll find a way to fit you in. Okay?" Chan nods his head and walks a bit closer to the desk. He eyes the planner and frowns when he doesn't see any other sessions written down with other patients. "How about on Thursday around noon?" Sunmi suggests, "Does that work for you?"

"Um, yeah, sure," Chan says, taking a step back so that the woman doesn't notice him peeking at her schedule. Sunmi smiles and nods her head, making note of it by scribbling onto the lines dedicated for that day. "You're all set," Sunmi says, "We can work out costs after your first session."

"Thank you," Chan says.

"Hey," Felix says as he appears suddenly by the doorway to the room, "All set?"

"Yes," Sunmi says, "He's penciled in for this Thursday."

"Sounds good," Felix says, "Do you mind if I sit in too? I promise not to be a bother, but Chan hyung is like a brother to me. I want to be there for him."

"If that's what he wants, then it's fine," Sunmi says.

"Thanks," Felix says, "You want to get going?" Chan nods and flashes a smile at the counselor before walking over to his cousin. The two head out the door and Felix discreetly shows Chan a news article from online. Chan takes the phone from the freckled hunter and frowns when he reads the tag line, Another Suicide From Grieving Patient of Lee Sunmi's Practice, Coincidence or Possible Murder Suspect? "You just have a nose for trouble, don't you?" Felix asks, "You always seem to find us possible cases without even trying."

Chan shrugs and passes the phone back to his cousin, "So, that's why the cops were heckling her."

"Yup," Felix says, "Turns out this is the tenth suicide in the past two months. And get this...the cause of death was the exact same for each victim."

"How did they die?" Chan asks.

"They all bashed their head against the wall until they cracked their skull open," Felix answers.

Chan's eyebrows furrow, "That's...um...specific."

"Exactly," Felix says, "The cops think that Sunmi-ssi is like mind manipulating them or something. It's too coincidental not to have something to do with her."

"That explains her completely empty schedule," Chan says, "I wouldn't want to come to her if all her previous patients died by wall..."

"So, you spoke with her, did you get monster vibes?" Felix asks.

Chan shakes his head, "Not at all."

"Yeah, I don't know what she is or if she is even something," Felix says, "I snuck in to check around a bit before I went over to you. There was no witch stuff, no hearts, no blood bags, nothing that could pinpoint her as a monster that feeds on humans. I scanned for EMF though and I got a lot of flashing lights."

"Ghosts?" Chan questions.

Felix shrugs, "Maybe, the center was built over a grave or something. It's happened before." Chan nods as they near their car and Felix digs the keys from his pocket. He unlocks the vehicle and the two slide inside. "Have you dug into the history of the place?" Chan asks.

Felix shakes his head, "Not yet. I was thinking we get a place to stay considering you have a counseling session with Sunmi-ssi in two days and then we can start really digging."

──────●◎●──────

"Okay, so it isn't a ghost," Felix huffs as he closes his laptop. The cousins are within another small motel room that has been decorated for a glow in the dark theme. The wallpaper is black with streaks of neon yellow, green, and pink across the walls. There are bright lava lamps in the corners that add to the aesthetic and the floor has neon speckled black carpeting. "Are you sure?" Chan asks from where he stands unloading things from his nap sack.

"Yes," Felix says, "That building was built over an old high school that was destroyed to build a new one in a better location. No one died, so there isn't any soul lingering in that area."

"Then, explain the EMF," Chan states.

Felix leans back in his seat and sighs, "There are other things that give off frequencies besides ghosts you know. Like angels or demons or reapers!"

"Those creatures don't really apply in this situation," Chan says, "Angels wouldn't involve themselves with humans and go around killing them. Demons use deals to take souls, and before you say bashing your brains to mush sounds like something a possessed person would do, the new king used to be king of the crossroads demon and follows strictly by those rules. Reapers don't go after human souls until their dead and they definitely have never had the ability to make humans slam their heads into the wall so they reach their end faster."

"Okay, okay," Felix says with a shake of his head, "I'll check the books or something." He slowly gets up from his seat and gravitates towards where they have a couple lore books stacked upon the dresser. Felix picks one up and starts to flip through it in hopes of finding something that matches with what is happening in this town. "I've been thinking about the bashing your head in part," Chan says, "It's such an odd way to commit suicide."

"I know," Felix says, "It makes me think that they didn't actually want to kill themselves and were like coerced or something." Chan nods his head and falls silent after that. His eyebrows shift as he starts to think, a look of concentration falling on his face. "Oh, I'm such an idiot!" Chan huffs suddenly, "It's so obvious."

"You know what we're dealing with?" Felix questions.

Chan nods, "Hand me that red book." Felix heeds his cousin's words and passes him what he asks for. Chan takes it and brings it over to the medium sized desk. He flips it open to a page with the curly words Banshee written at the top. Felix peeks over his cousin's shoulder and his jaw drops. "You've got to be kidding," Felix comments, "You're right. It is so obvious now that I think about it."

"Banshee's screaming can drive humans insane and make them bash their own heads in. Once the human is dead, the banshees feed on their frontal lobe," Chan states, "It appears like suicide cause the human actually does kill themselves but it's brought on by the banshee's screaming."

"Banshees only prey on the vulnerable and hunt a location until it is picked clean before moving on," Felix murmurs, "Grieving people in search of counsel...what a better place to get a feast handed to you..."

"And they also emit an EMF," Chan says.

"Great, so now we know what we're dealing with," Felix says, "And how to kill it."

"Stab it with a weapon of pure gold," Chan says, "I think we have some in the trunk, but if we don't I'm sure we can just give a call to Seungmin."

"We are also going to have to lure it out," Felix says, "And considering that Sunmi has no other clients then you..."

"Hey, I'm not as emotionally vulnerable as I'm pretending to be," Chan says.

"Well, you're going to have to be if we want to kill this banshee," Felix says, "We should also move your appointment to a later date considering banshees come out at night."

"Alright, alright," Chan says, "Why do I always end up as the bait for the monsters?"

"It's cause you're delectable," Felix chuckles.

"Gross," Chan says, fake barfing.

Sunmi slips her phone into her bag and throws it over her shoulder. She pushes her chair in before flicking the lights off in her little office area. She makes her way towards the door and picks up a stack of folders which sits on a small table near the entrance. She slips them under her armpit when there's a loud knock on the door. Sunmi frowns in confusion, wondering who it could be. She opens the door and her eyebrows raise when she sees who it is. "Yubin-ssi?" Sunmi questions, "What are you doing here?"

"I know it's late and you're probably heading home, but I needed someone to talk to and I know I stopped coming to see you since...but I need someone now and you're the only person I can think of," Yubin rambles. She is garbed in a gray cardigan sweater atop a white t-shirt and baggy shorts. Her hair is in a messy ponytail with little fly always all over her face. Her expression is distressed and her shoulders are tense. Sunmi sighs and gestures for her former client to enter. Yubin steps inside and makes her way towards the back room. She throws open the door with a flourish and flicks the light on. Sunmi follows behind her with a worried expression on her face. Yubin begins to pace back and forth anxiously while nibbling in her nails. "Take a seat, Yubin-ssi," Sunmi urges. The woman nods and carefully walks over to take a seat on the white couch. Sunmi sits across from her in a matching seating area. She digs into her bag and takes out a piece of paper and a pen. She nods her head, "Okay, do you want to tell me what happened?"

"I thought I was moving on," Yubin sighs, "But, I was trying to move some of her stuff and I just thought of her and then I started losing it. Don't you see! I'm regressing! I thought I moved past the endless tears! I shouldn't be upset anymore!"

"There is no time table for your grief, Yubin-ssi," Sunmi states, "We've been over this. Don't beat yourself up for being upset. You need to let it out. That is the only way you will be able to move on."

"But, still!" Yubin huffs, "I can't just randomly start crying over her anymore...she wouldn't want me to cry."

"You will cry even when you have accepted your sister's passing," Sunmi says, "And i am sure that your sister will not hate you for feeling emotions." Yubin opens her mouth to speak again when the lights begin to flicker. The two women stiffen and stare at the light fixtures in surprise. Yubin frowns as a faint shrieking noise echoes. She flinches, "Did you hear that?"

"Hear what?" Sunmi questions. Yubin's eyes widen and she gasps suddenly. She winces in pain and clamps her hands over her ears. She slides off the couch and onto the floor, "That! That screaming! Oh, gosh, it's horrible!" She whimpers in pain as the sound gets louder and louder. She presses the heels of her hands deeper against her ears as tears begin to build in her eyes. "Please! Stop it!" She sobs. Sunmi's eyes become frantic and she moves to Yubin's side. She places her hands on her shoulders, "What's wrong?"

"Don't you hear it?! The screaming! It hurts!" Yubin exclaims in pain, "Oh, I need to stop it! It has to stop! I can't take it!" She swats Sunmi's hands off of her and staggers to her feet. She rushes towards the wall in front of her and slams her head into it. Sunmi yelps in shock at her former patient's actions. "Yubin-ssi! Stop it!" Sunmi exclaims, rushing forward to grab the woman and pull her away from the wall.

"The shrieking! The crying! It won't stop! I must make it stop!!!" Yubin cries in a hollow tone. She forces herself to slam her head into the wall again and again. Sunmi struggles to hold her back, but her efforts are in vain as blood starts to blossom from Yubin's head. "No," Sunmi whispers, "Please...let me help you..."

"Make it stop, make it stop," Yubin murmurs as she bangs her head against the previously white walls. It isn't long before Yubin's body slumps to the floor limp and her eyes become empty. Sunmi covers her mouth with her hand, her breath shaky. She slowly glances over at Yubin, but instead of seeing her former patient's dead body she makes eye contact with a shadowy billowing figure hovering in the air. Her eyes are black and hollow and she appears to be wearing a black dress. Her skin is gray and opaque and her mouth glows a sickly yellow. Her arms are outstretched, trying to grab onto Yubin. Sunmi blood runs cold at the sight of the ghost-like figure in front of her. She scrambles out of the room, too scared to even scream, leaving behind the creature to do what it will with Yubin.
