Chapter 23

Onto a new city with new mysteries! I want to point out that this chapter has violence, gore, unhealthy relationships, etc. This is an additional trigger warning. Please keep this in mind if any of these topics bother you. With that said, I hope that you enjoy.

Then: Paju

"I'm already home" A woman garbed in a simple party dress says as she climbs out of her car. There's a large handbag thrown over her shoulder and her hair is a tousled mess. She has a phone in her hand which is on speaker phone. "Yongsun-ah," A man's voice says, "I'm just worried."

"You don't need to be, I can handle myself," Yongsun says as she walks towards the front door of her home.

"Yeah, I know," The man sighs, "I'll see you tomorrow then."

"Good night," Yongsun says as she ends the call and slips her phone into her pocket. She sighs as she digs into her bag and takes out a pair of keys. She sticks it into the lock on the door and twists. She enters home with a sigh of relief, happy to be back. Yongsun kicks her flats from her feet and drops her bag to the floor, too tired to even bother putting it where it belongs. "This is what I get for agreeing to go to a party," Yongsun groans as she gravitates towards her small living room. She flops onto her couch and lets out a sigh as she snuggles into a blue pillow. Her eyes begin to fall shut when the sound of her doorbell ringing startles her. She groans and pushes herself up. "Who in the world is that?" She asks herself. Yongsun runs her fingers through her hair in an attempt to appear a tad bit neater and fixes her dress a bit. She walks towards the door and unlocks it. She pulls it open and her eyes widen when she sees who is on the other side. "What are you doing here?" Yongsun questions.

"I need your heart," A man garbed in a blue dress shirt with rolled up sleeves says.

"Huh?" Yongsun says, not understanding what the man means.

"I need your heart," The man says again. This time though he reaches a hand out and grabs onto Yongsun's shoulders. The woman's eyes widen and she tries to shove them man, but he doesn't budge. Instead, he forces his way into her home and shoves her against the wall. "Your heart," He states once more before raising a hand from Yongsun's shoulder and plunging it into her chest. Yongsun screams in pain as he yanks the organ from her body before letting her drop to the floor.

Now

"How do you feel about a case?" Felix asks as he passes Chan a fish cake on a stick. The blonde Aussie frowns as he takes the stick and blows at it. The two have been searching for any sign of Wonpil's soul, but so far no luck. They contacted their demon friend, but all their calls went directly to voicemail. Same could be said about their angel buddy. They don't know if that's a good thing or a bad. Felix urged his cousin to just keep moving along and wait until they received news or noticed any sightings of Wonpil. Chan agreed, saying they should continue their journey. Although the blonde went along with it, he was acting a tad bit different. Quieter and more reserved now that he knows his old friend isn't in a better place. Something that Felix couldn't do anything about, no matter how much he tried. Chan needs a pick me up and what better way to give him that than going hunting. "I don't know," Chan mutters, shifting a bit so that he can lean on the car a bit more comfortably.

"C'mon," Felix urges, "You've been in a funk lately. I'm sure you've noticed it."

"What about Wonpil?" Chan asks.

"We haven't gotten any news yet," Felix says, "When we do, we'll go to wherever his soul is right away, but until then we have to keep going. Remember...you said you wanted to keep moving..."

"Right," Chan mutters. Felix sighs and shakes his head. His cousin is really out of it. "So, what do you say about that case?" Felix asks again.

"What's it about?" Chan questions. Felix starts to smile at the fact that his cousin is interested, but Chan stops him with a hand. "I just want to hear what the case is about. I'll make my decision afterwards," Chan says.

Felix nods, "I overheard some people talking about how there's been another strange death in a town in Paju about an hour from here. Young women are being found with their hearts ripped out. This is like the third one this week."

"Hearts?" Chan echoes, "That's got to be a werewolf."

"Exactly what I was thinking," Felix says, "We can handle werewolves. It's nothing crazy, so what do you say? Should we take the hunt?" Chan purses his lips together in thought as Felix looks to the older with expectation. The blonde sighs and nods his head, "Let's do it. I need a distraction."

"Great," Felix says, "I'll go get the silver."

──────●◎●──────

"Let me know if you guys need anything," Seungmin says over a video call with the cousins. The two have arrived in the town with the assumed werewolf attacks and are making their way into the police office to check out the bodies and other files. "Thanks, but we should be okay," Felix says, "It's just a werewolf."

"Still," Seungmin says, "I'm here if things go a bit awry."

"We appreciate it, Seungmin," Chan says.

The man of letters nods his head and smiles, "Good luck." He waves before ending the call. Chan slips his phone into his pocket and lets out a sigh. "We got this, don't we?" Chan asks.

Felix nods, "We already know what we're up against. I mean what else yanks out hearts? Werewolves eat them, so it's gotta be them. We've fought a bunch of these suckers before. Silver kills them. We got silver bullets and knives. We're prepared. This should be an easy hunt."

"Yeah," Chan murmurs.

Felix frowns at this, "Are you okay?"

"Fine," Chan says, "Just thinking too much..."

"Want to talk about it?" Felix asks.

Chan sighs, "Not right now..." Felix nods his head and lets the subject drop as they walk over to a small office belonging to the team leader of the case. "How can I help you?" A woman with her hair tied into a tight ponytail asks as they enter. She has a simple plaque sitting on her desk that reads Moon Byulyi. "We're with the NIS," Chan says in an even tone.

"You're here about the murders," She says with a sigh.

"We were wondering if we could see the body of the recent victim and any other files you may have," Felix says. The woman nods her head and opens one of her drawers. She pulls out a large Manila folder and passes it to the boys. "Do you have a suspect yet?" Chan asks as he takes the folder

Team Leader Moon shakes her head, "We're still trying to find a pattern amongst the girls."

"And cause of death for all is um...loss of a heart," Felix says.

"Yes," She answers, "Ripped clean from each of their chests." Chan flips open the papers and brings it close to Felix, so that he can see it as well. There's a bunch of pictures and files inside, identifying each of the victims and showing the injuries they sustained. "The issue is that we don't have a clue how our murderer even was able to do such a thing," Team Leader Moon says, "It makes zero sense..."

"Well, we'll do our best to help out in any way we can," Felix says, "Now where did you say the morgue was?"

──────●◎●──────

"This is the place?" Felix asks. Chan nods and pushes the car door open. The two are in front of the late Kim Yongsun's place in hopes of finding her older sister and speaking to her. After their trip to the morgue, they confirmed that they were dealing with a werewolf just as they suspected. The next thing they had to do was figure out exactly what tied all these girls together. The werewolf would have to have went after people that either passed the same area or was nearby or something along those lines. They just have to figure out what the common variable is so they can lock down on exactly who is their furry mutt. The cousins decided that the best person to speak to first would be the latest victim's older sister, Yonghee. They reasoned that the two should be close and if that is true then they should be able to find what ties these girls together in no time. Chan knocks on the front door and waits as a woman with her hair tied in a messy bun opens it. Her eyes are red and she is garbed in sweats. The cousins flash their badges at her, already feeling bad for coming to speak with her when she just lost a younger sibling. "NIS?" The woman says in surprise.

Chan nods, "We're sorry to bother you, Yonghee-ssi, but we're trying to find your sister's killer and attempting to find a pattern between all the deaths."

"W-what do you need to know?" She stutters a bit before taking a deep breath to regain her composure.

"Are there any places that Yongsun frequented? Bars maybe?" Felix asks.

"My sister wasn't a party type of girl," Yonghee says, "You would have to drag her out of the house if you wanted to go anywhere."

"What about people?" Chan says, "Anyone that she spends a lot of time with?"

"No one except for her friends, but they've already given their alibis and stuff," Yonghee says, "And..."

"And?" Felix asks.

Yonghee sighs, "She had this man she was seeing. She was trying to hide him from me, but I'm not stupid. I noticed how she would always be looking at her phone and how she suddenly started wanting to go out more."

"This man, do you happen to know his name?" Chan asks.

"I just found out" Yonghee frowns, "When they gave me her belongings back...Kang Shiwoo...the town's resident...you know..."

"Ah," Felix says.

Yonghee nods, "My sister probably had no idea or maybe she did. Shiwoo is a sweet-talker, I'm sure that he was able to convince her to trust him. I would've told her to break up with the idiot, but it's too late now..."

"Do girls still begin relationships with him even though he's this type of person?" Felix asks.

Yonghee sighs, "From what I heard, Shiwoo convinces a girl that she's the only one for him. Most girls believe it and start dating the cheating bastard. He's been doing this for a long time, so girls usually don't find out his true colors until it's too late. He's broken so many hearts in this town, but it's only seemed to make him appear even more attractive and desirable." Felix scoffs at this and shakes his head, finding this man absolutely ridiculous and disgusting. "Kang Shiwoo," Chan murmurs under his breath, "Do you happen to know where he lives?"

──────●◎●──────

"You know this is a nice discreet way of identifying monsters," Felix says, twirling the silver ballpoint pen in his hands.

"That's the point," Chan says as the two walk towards the front door of Kang Shiwoo's place.

"How come we never used this before?" Felix asks.

Chan shrugs, "Maybe cause you're always jumping to using guns or blowtorches first..." Felix smiles at that, flashing his cousin a guilty look for being so gung ho all the time. The two walk up to a medium sized white door. Chan presses the doorbell that is off to the side and waits for someone to open up. The muffled sound of voices coming from inside gets louder as the person speaker gets closer to the door. The door swings open after a couple of seconds, revealing a man and a woman. The man is garbed in a simple white-tee and sweats. His hair is gelled back and he has a cocky, confident smirk on his lips. The woman has her arms wrapped around the man's waist loosely. Her hair is dyed a dark blue and is in loose curls. She wears a simple tank top underneath a sheer, flowing cardigan with flower designs on it. "Can I help you?" The man asks.

"Are you Kang Shiwoo?" Chan asks. The man nods his head and the cousins reach into their pockets to flash their NIS badges. The woman's eyes widen in surprise and she looks at her partner with a mix of horror and dread. "Maybe, I should go," She murmurs.

"No, Wheein-ah, stay for a bit," Shiwoo begs.

"Actually, it may be better for her to leave," Felix says, "This doesn't involve her."

"See," Wheein says with a soft smile, "I'll see you tonight, okay?" She lets her arms fall from around the man. She bends down to grab a bag and slip on her shoes before quickly exiting the house and walking away. Shiwoo sighs and crosses his arms in front of his chest, "You guys better have a good excuse for bothering me. I was in the middle of something..."

"I'm sure you were," Chan says, "We're conducting an investigation on the murders going on within this town."

"What does that have to do with me?" Shiwoo questions.

"We just want to check around and see if anyone knows the girls that we killed," Felix says. He digs his hand into his pocket and pulls out his phone. He taps the screen a couple times before holding it out to Shiwoo. "Those are pictures of the victims," Felix says, "Tell me if any of them are familiar to you." The man takes the device and begins to scroll through the photos. He purses his lips and his shoulders tighten ever so slightly as he flips through them. Chan and Felix exchange a quick glance at that, finding his actions highly suspicious. Shiwoo shakes his head and passes the phone back to Felix, "I've never seen them before. Sorry..."

"Are you sure?" Chan asks. Shiwoo nods, a tad bit too quickly. "Okay then," Felix says, "Well, if you suddenly recall anything related to these girls, give us a call." He passes the pen with a business card clipped to it. The silver pen glints in the sun as Shiwoo takes it with no problem. "Will do," Shiwoo says, slipping the pen off the card and handing it back to Felix. The freckled hunter takes it and forces a smile to his face, "Thanks."

──────●◎●──────

"So, Shiwoo isn't our guy," Felix says, "Damn...I really thought we had that one."

"Me too," Chan says, "It's back to the drawing board, I guess." The cousins are back in their car heading towards a place to eat following their failed attempt at identifying their monster. Suddenly, the sound of a phone buzzing starts to echo. Felix looks down at the cup holders and sees Chan's phone light up with a video call from Seungmin. Felix grabs the phone and quickly answers the call. "Hey, what's up?" Felix says as his friend appears on the screen.

"Hi," Seungmin says, "I know you guys said that this is an easy werewolf case, but I really don't think it is. I was doing some research and some hacking. I stumbled across some CCTV footage of this guy making his way to each of the victim's houses the night of their attack. Give me a second and I'll bring it up." Less than a minute later, a grainy image of a man pops up onto the screen. He is garbed in all black, but his face is still identifiable. "That's Kang Shiwoo. He's the town's playboy. He's supposedly had contact with every one of the victims," Chan mutters, glancing at the photo as he turns the car to the left, "We thought he was our werewolf and went to his place. We handed him a silver pen. He didn't react. There's no way it could have been him who did the deed."

"It isn't Kang Shiwoo in the picture," Felix comments, "But, it is someone using his face." The freckled hunter points to the eyes which glow a white light. "A shapeshifter?" Chan questions, "Since when do those rip hearts out?"

"No idea," Seungmin says as he appears on the screen again, "But, whatever you're dealing with isn't a werewolf. Their eyes don't get a glare like that on camera."

"Great," Felix sighs, "We were barking up the wrong tree this entire time."

"It's okay," Seungmin says, "At first glance, I would have assumed that it was a werewolf too."

"Well, thanks Seungmin," Chan says, "We would have still been searching for the wrong creature if it weren't for you."

"Just doing my job," Seungmin says, "I'll call if I can find anything else about the shifter." Felix nods and waves before ending the call. The freckled boy sighs and places the phone down. "This case is becoming a lot more troublesome than it should be," Felix says as Chan pulls into a parking spot in front of a small little diner. The two start to climb out of the car when suddenly, there's a loud crash sound coming from inside the place. This noise is followed by an ear-piercing scream. The doors fly open and groups of people rush out of the diner. Chan and Felix exchange a quick glance before rushing out of their car and into the diner.

──────●◎●──────

Chan and Felix burst into the diner. Their weapons are both drawn as they survey the scene. It's a mess inside. Tables are turned over and there's broken plates and food on the floor. The area is pretty empty considering everyone chose to flee while they could. The only people inside is a blue-haired woman garbed in a waitress uniform with tears streaming down her face. She is pressed up against the wall, breathing heavily as a man in all black staggers towards her. "Y-you're n-not Sh-Shiwoo," The woman stutters.

"Aren't I?" Not Shiwoo asks, "I just want your heart, Wheein-ah..."

"N-no," Wheein sobs. Chan glances over at his cousin, who has his gun pointed at the monster. Felix fires his gun three times, releasing silver bullets which hit its target right in the chest. Not Shiwoo flinches as he gets hit, but he doesn't seem to be very fazed other than that. Chan's eyes widen and he rushes towards Wheein. He kicks the monster on his way there so that he can quickly get to the woman and bring her to safety. "Why isn't it working?!" Felix exclaims, unloading more bullets into the monster which also has no effect. Chan wraps an arm around Wheein's shoulder and gently squeezes. "Are you alright?" He asks. Wheein shakily nods her head and sniffles a bit. "I want you to make a run for the door, okay?" Chan says, "When I say go, run." Wheein nods her head again as Chan points his weapon at Not Shiwoo. "Go!" Chan shouts as he begins to fire at the monster. The blue-haired woman dashes towards the door. Not Shiwoo growls at this and darts forward. He knocks over a bunch of tables as he grabs at Wheein's wrist. The woman shrieks as she is yanked back and tossed against the counter. She groans as her body hits the floor. "Hyung!?" Felix yells as he tries to fire his now empty gun. Chan grits his teeth and grabs a napkin holder from beside him. He rushes at the monster and slams it into his head which also has no effect. Not Shiwoo doesn't even pay him much mind as he stalks closer to Wheein. Chan growls and fires his gun until he is out of rounds. "It's not a shifter!" Felix hisses as he charges forward. He jumps onto it's back and wraps his arms around the monster's neck. He grits his teeth as he tries to pull it back, but he keeps moving as if the hunter hasn't done anything. "No shit!" Chan says, quickly rushing towards Wheein. He grabs onto her wrist and yanks her to her feet. They rush around the countertop and bend down. "Stay here," Chan states. He looks around for something he can use as a weapon and his eyes lock on a stack of plates. "Yo, Felix!" Chan calls, "You might want to duck your head."

"Are you going to throw things at him!?" Felix exclaims.

"Yes," Chan says as he grabs plates and swings them at Not Shiwoo as if they were flying discs. The plates collide with the monster's body and stick into him, but he doesn't pay them much attention. Felix grumbles as a shard of glass misses his face by just a bit. The freckled hunter releases the monster and drops to the floor. He reaches into his pocket and takes out a knife. He slashes at Not Shiwoo's ankles and legs in an attempt to slow him down, but just like before nothing seems to work. "What do we do, hyung?" Felix asks in a loud voice. Chan ducks back behind the counter and shakes his head, not knowing how to answer. Suddenly, buzzing in his pocket makes him jump. Chan digs his hand into his pocket and takes out his phone. He grits his teeth and answers the call, bringing the device to his ear. "It's not a shifter," Chan says as the monster looms over them. Wheein whimpers and huddles close to Chan as he grabs a fork and stabs it in the monster's hand. He slowly stands and rushes Wheein towards the kitchens. Felix follows behind, grabbing anything he could possibly use as a weapon to stall the monster from getting his hands on the blue-haired woman. "That's exactly what I was going to say!" Seungmin says in surprise over the phone.

"We could've used that information earlier," Chan hisses, "We're currently trying to fight off whatever it is right this second and it isn't working!"

"Shit!" Seungmin exclaims.

"Yeah!" Chan growls, "We need to do something. Tell me you know what this thing is!"

"Um...I have a tentative list," Seungmin says.

"Seungmin! We have a civilian with us and the monster is going after her!" Chan says, "We don't have time for a tentative list! I need to know what this thing is now!" Felix grabs a spatula that's been left behind on the countertop and slaps the monster's face which doesn't seem to do much but anger the creature. The freckled hunter continues to scramble about and toss whatever he can at Not Shiwoo. Wheein whimpers as she watches the fight unfold in front of her eyes. "Okay, okay," Seungmin says in a frazzled tone, "Describe the creature to me."

"It has Kang Shiwoo's appearance, but it isn't Shiwoo," Chan rambles quickly, "It doesn't seem to be hurt by anything we throw at it and only seems to want to go after Wheein-ssi and her heart."

"You said earlier that the real Kang Shiwoo gets around, right?" Seungmin asks.

"Yes! What does this have to do with anything?" Chan questions.

"Okay, well, I think I know what it is," Seungmin says.

Chan huffs, "Care to explain?"

"There's no time," Seungmin says, "Just kiss, Wheein-ssi."

"What!?" Chan exclaims in disbelief.

"I'll explain why later, just do it!" Seungmin shouts.

"You better be right about this," Chan says before turning to face Wheein, "I'm sorry about this, but it should get him to go away." He brings their faces close together and presses his lips to hers for a second before pulling back. Chan glances at the monster, who has stopped looking at Wheein and now has his eyes locked on the Aussie. "Chan-ah, please give me your heart," Not Shiwoo says.

"Shit," Chan states before pushing himself to his feet and bolting out the back door. The monster charges after him followed by Felix, who has absolutely no idea why his cousin kissed Wheein, why Not Shiwoo is chasing now chasing Chris, or what the hell is happening. They continue to run around until Chan is able to shake the monster off his tail by hiding in an abandoned factory. Felix finds his way there thanks to a simple text message from his cousin. "What the hell, Seungmin?" Chan huffs. The phone is now on speaker and the cousins can both hear as the man of letters speaks to them. "I got the monster to stop going after Wheein-ssi," Seungmin says.

"Yeah and chase me instead!" Chan exclaims.

"You're a hunter," Seungmin says, "You're faster and would've been able to get away so that I can tell you exactly what you're up against."

"And what exactly are we up against?" Felix asks.

"A qareen," Seungmin states.

You'll have to wait a couple more weeks before you find out what this creature is (if you're really curious, you can Google lol). This chapter is a doozy. Lots of craziness and chaos that I had lots of fun writing. The interactions between Chan and Felix is my favorite part of this story. I hope that you like their dynamics too and enjoyed this chapter. With that said, please comment, vote, follow me, add this story to your library and check out my other works! Until next time. Have a great weekend!
