Chapter 24
Sam and Gabriel leave their second class together to walk down to lunch at Castiel's room. Sam really enjoys it, though he isn't sure exactly why. Most people would try to avoid having lunch with the teachers, but Sam wishes he could every day, especially with Gabriel.
"Hey, you know how Cas said we could all go back to his room for lunch today?" Gabriel asks him.
"Yeah, why?"
"I told everyone to go there and we can all annoy Cas together," he replies with a smirk.
"Everyone being?"
"Michael, Lucifer, Balthazar, Anna, Metatron, Hannah, and Samandriel," Gabriel replies, without having to pause to think of who comes next. It honestly amazes Sam that he has that burned into his brain. "I don't know how many of them will show up, by we'll see."
Sam laughs. "Nice."
"Sam!" a small voice calls after him. He turns around, but he already knows who it is.
"I thought Jess wasn't here today," Gabriel whispers. "Wasn't that the reason we're partying with Castiel?"
"I guess we were wrong," Sam replies.
"Sam, hey," Jess greets him, ignoring the boy by his side. "We've got to talk."
"Okay. We're over. Good talk." Sam's voice is colder than ice. He turns to leave.
"No, Sam, wait!" When Sam doesn't reply, she continues, "Sam, listen to me." She follows him as they walk down to Castiel's room.
"He told you to leave him alone," Gabriel says in a low voice. "I suggest you do that."
"You're not a part of this," Jess tell him.
"Well, actually, I am," Gabriel replies. "See, this is my friend and when someone hurts your friend-"
"That's not what this is about," Jess cuts him off. "You're not doing this as a friend. You like him." That gets Sam's attention. He looks between them in surprise.
"What?" Gabriel says, his only attempt at denial, though it's more out of shock.
"Don't deny it; it's obvious," Jess sneers. "It's been obvious since day one."
"What?" Gabriel says again, still trying to process that she knows. He hasn't been too obvious about it, has he?
"You probably took Sam to that bathroom on purpose so he would see," Jess continues. "You set this whole thing up so you could get with him, didn't you?"
"No I didn't!" Gabriel protests. "I wouldn't-"
"Jess, I think you should go," Sam says quietly, interrupting Gabriel mid-sentence.
"Fine. Talk to you later, Sam." She gives Gabriel a victorious look before strutting away, and they're both thankful she wasn't around to hear Castiel's room is open.
"Sam, I didn't-" Gabriel begins, but Sam interrupts him.
"I know," he replies calmly. "But was she right? Do you like me?"
Gabriel hesitates. He doesn't want to lie, but he doesn't want to admit it, either, in case Sam doesn't like him back, which he doesn't. Finally, Gabriel nods. "Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?" Sam asks.
"Because you were already dating Jess, and then I wasn't going to say anything right after you broke up," Gabriel explains. "Plus, I didn't think you'd like me back." When Sam doesn't say anything, he adds, "And it looks like I was right."
"No, Gabriel-" Sam begins, the pauses. "If anyone had asked me this morning if I liked you, I would have said no," he admits, much to Gabriel's dismay. "But now, I'm not so sure."
"Really?" Gabriel asks, his eyes going wide. He hasn't expected that.
Sam nods. "Yeah. I can't make any promises, but I do want to hang out with you, just like I always have. Maybe there is something between us." Sam gives him a small smile at the last part, and Gabriel feels his heart explode. "But enough awkwardly standing in the hallway. Let's get to lunch."
