Chapter 23
Chuck is still hanging around when the bell rings. Him, Castiel, and Charlie had been so absorbed in their conversation, they hadn't noticed how much time had gone by.
"Bye, Cas!" Charlie calls as she heads to the door. "Thanks, Mr... Edlund? Novak? Um, thanks, you!"
Chuck laughs as the rest of the class leaves, and he stands in the doorway with Castiel.
"Thanks for coming, Dad," Castiel says.
"Thanks for letting me come," Chuck replies. "Hey, sorry for not telling you about, well, everything."
The difference between fights with Chuck and fight with the rest of the Novaks is that with Chuck, everything is apologized for fairly quickly, whereas the kids can all hold a grudge for a while.
"It's fine," Castiel assures him. "Sorry for not telling you about Dean. I just never had the chance."
Chuck nods. "Yeah, I figured that was it. Maybe with Lucifer, I would have thought he was a serial killer, but I know better with you."
"Dad?" a familiar voice says from next to them. They look over to see Gabriel, looking up at them in confusion.
"What are you doing here?" Balthazar asks, joining them.
"Chatting with Castiel's class," Chuck informs them. "I'm leaving now, don't worry."
"See ya later," Gabriel says, then joins Sam to walk to class. Balthazar follows, and the rest of the two classes leave as well. The only ones left are Chuck, Castiel, and Dean, all standing in the doorways.
"Hey, I'm Dean," he introduces himself, holding out a hand.
Chuck shakes it. "I'm Castiel's dad," he replies. "It's nice to meet you. I've heard literally nothing about you."
"That's not true," Castiel protests. "I told you I was meeting up with one of the teachers, so technically, I told you something."
"Oh, right," Chuck remembers. "Okay, I've heard almost nothing about you."
"I don't know if I should be offended or not," Dean jokes. "What, are you embarrassed by me?"
"Yes," Castiel replies, though he makes it clear he doesn't mean it. "Definitely."
"Wow, Cas. Great. Really feeling the love here," Dean says sarcastically.
"Can I just ask about this 'Cas' thing?" Chuck asks. "Because for the last twenty two years, I've been saying 'Castiel,' and now all of a sudden it's 'Cas' this and 'Cas' that and I feel like I missed an important memo here."
"No, 'Castiel' is still relevant," he assures his father. "Well, at least as relevant as I am. Charlie started calling me 'Cas' and it just caught on."
"Why do they call you Cas, though?" Chuck asks. "Does every teacher go by their first name now?" He looks at Dean. "Do the kids call you by your first name?"
Dean shakes his head. "No, I think it's just Cas."
"I'm special," Castiel says with an exaggerated smile.
"Yes you are, Cas," Dean agrees. "Whether it's a good thing or a bad thing, I won't say."
"Thanks, Dean," Castiel says sarcastically, but he's grinning.
Chuck laughs. "Even at school, you can't escape people making fun of you. Alright, I'm going home. See ya later." He gives the two of them a quick smile before he leaves them alone, and Dean relaxes into the doorway as soon as he's out of sight.
"Why did no one tell me it was Bring Your Dad to Work Day?" Dean asks.
"He wanted to talk to Charlie about his books," Castiel clarifies. "It's a long story."
Dean nods once, accepting the explanation. "I wasn't ready for the 'meet the parents' day quite yet," he admits with a nervous chuckle.
"If it means anything, I think he likes you," Castiel replies. "Granted, he likes just about everyone, so it doesn't mean much."
"Hey, I'll take it," Dean says thankfully. "Did you really not tell him anything about me? Like, at all?"
Castiel chews on the inside of his cheek. He should really stop doing that; his mouth is raw from the constant abuse. "No, but it's not because I didn't want to. I just... Never got the chance. It's got nothing to do with you, I swear."
"Of course it doesn't," Dean says, smirking. "I'm too awesome to want to keep secret."
Castiel rolls his eyes. "Sure," he replies, drawing out the vowel and making the sarcasm clear.
"Come on, you love me," Dean says with a flirtatious smile.
"M'kay, yes I do," he admits, but he'll never be able to emphasize how true it is.
"Hey, guys," Balthazar says, quickly catching up to Sam and Gabriel after first block. He walks next to his brother.
"Hey, Balthazar," Sam greets him politely.
"'Sup, Balth?" Gabriel replies.
"How's life?" Balthazar asks, though it seems to be directed towards just Gabriel.
"Lifelike," he replies vaguely.
"That's good. I think."
Gabriel laughs at his confusion. "You'll never know," he replies mysteriously, then starts whistling mysterious music. When Sam and Balthazar laugh, Gabriel can't help but join them, his smile making it impossible to whistle any more.
"What class do you have?" Sam asks him politely. He and Balthazar never get to talk, and he decides to change that.
"This one," Balthazar replies, something about his voice sounding less amused than when he was talking to Gabriel. "Bye, Gabe."
"See ya," his brother replies with a smile and a wave.
"Bye," Sam replies quietly, even though Balthazar never said it to him. Balthazar doesn't seem to like him very much, or at all. What did Sam ever do to him? Sam has barely spoken to anyone besides Dean, Anna, and Gabriel since he moved here. He never even had time to annoy Balthazar, even if he wanted to. He just wished he could figure out what was up with him, so he could fix it. He wants to be friends with the family. After all, Gabriel is his closest friend, and Sam wants to make sure he's welcome around his friend's family.
