Chapter 22

Castiel spins around in his teacher chair, waiting for his class to arrive. He pulls out his phone, wanting to talk to someone while he waits. Dean isn't here yet; probably still at home with Sam. His brothers would be getting ready for school as well, so he can't bug them. That basically leaves Chuck, and Castiel already knows he's awake and not doing anything. He's coming in around when class starts, but he didn't want to wait around forever like Castiel does.
"Hey, Castiel, what's up?" Chuck asks when he answers the phone.
"I'm bored," Castiel complains.
"You're the one that wanted to go so early. Every. Single. Day."
"Ah, yeah, that's true," he agrees. "But until someone shows up, I'm going to be bored."
"So what do you want me to do about it?"
"Talk to me until I'm not bored," Castiel replies as if it's obvious.
"Alright, I can do that. Wait, hold on." Chuck's voice is faint as he yells at someone to not throw pizza at people. Castiel stifles a laugh. That's the real reason he likes leaving early. His brothers are insane. "Sorry."
"Ah, it's fine. Anybody killing each other yet?"
"Nope, surprisingly," Chuck laughs. "Not that Lucifer hasn't tried."
Castiel frowns. That's rarely a good thing. "What happened?"
"Long story," Chuck says vaguely. "Wait, don't-okay. Alright, I've got to go. See ya later."
"Good luck," Castiel says before hanging up. He can only imagine what's going on back there. Castiel should probably stay at home later in the mornings, so he can at least try to help his father out. Then again, he values his life too much to want to face Lucifer in the morning. He may be annoying most of the time, but tired Lucifer is horrible.
Castiel chats with Charlie until everyone else comes in, once again thankful that she arrives early as well. Jess is the only one who isn't here today, just because the author doesn't want to have to deal with her right now. When the bell rings, she goes back to her seat, just as she does every day. Castiel kicks out the visitors-Anna and Gabriel this time-and waits for the room to calm down before speaking.
"Alright, guys! Good morning!" Castiel greets them. "First of all, feel free to come here for lunch. I don't really care today. Also, we're going to have a visitor today. Now, before I tell you who it is, you're technically not supposed to know this, so just... Don't tell anyone."
"Of course," Sully agrees.
"Before Charlie kills me for not saying anything, I wasn't allowed to tell anyone that I knew him. But we were talking, and I offered to let him come in, and he is, so at some point in the next few minutes, you guys will get to meet Carver Edlund."
Charlie starts hyperventilating, most likely in a joking way. "Carver Edlund? Like, the real Carver Edlund? Supernatural author Carver Edlund?"
Castiel chuckles. "Yep."
"Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Wait, you know Carver Edlund? You never said you knew Carver Edlund. How long have you known Carver Edlund?"
"A long time," Castiel replies vaguely. She's freaking out enough had she gets to meet him. He probably shouldn't say that he's his son.
"Why didn't you say anything?" Charlie asks.
"He doesn't like people knowing who he is," Castiel informs her. "He likes to live a more private life. You know, like, not having crazy fans show up at his house."
"But how do you know him?"
"Because there will always be those crazy fans that find you anyway," a voice says from the doorway. Everyone looks over, but Castiel already knows it's Chuck. He smiles at the class and walks into the room. "Hey, Castiel."
"Hi," Castiel replies. He almost says "Hi, Dad" out of habit, but he stops himself.
"Wait, so you're..." Sam says slowly.
"Carver Edlund?" Chuck finishes. "Yep. Hey, Sam."
"How do you know Carver Edlund?" Charlie asks.
"Um..." Sam looks to Chuck uncertainly, clearly unsure if he should answer honestly or not. Castiel watches silently, curious about how Chuck will answer this one. Is he going to think of a lie on the spot? Or is he going to tell the truth?
"He's friends with one of my kids," Chuck answers honestly, surprising Castiel.
"Who is it?" Charlie asks. "Do they go here?"
Chuck glances at Castiel, silently asking if he can tell them. It's his rule that his identity stays secret, but he's clearly unsure if Castiel wants them to know they are talking to his father. Castiel shrugs, a small movement barely perceptible. Chuck still sees it and looks back at the class.
"Gabriel," Chuck answers.
"Novak?" Kevin guesses.
Chuck nods. "That's the one."
"So you're Cas' dad?" Charlie observes in surprise.
"Yep."
"But-And-Uh-" Charlie stutters, looking between the two of them. "Seriously?"
"You make it seem so impossible," Castiel laughs.
"It is!" She pauses. "Actually... I mean, you're both writers. And Cas is really smart. You're probably really smart too, judging by your books."
"Actually, Castiel did most of the best lines. I just had the ideas, he made them look pretty," Chuck admits.
"Seriously?" Charlie says again.
"You saw what I did to Revolution," Castiel reminds her. "I wouldn't say I wrote most of the best lines, but I definitely edited the books a lot."
"Oh yeah!" Charlie says as if suddenly remembering that.
"Why did you leave my book out?" Chuck asks his son, quieter than he had been speaking, but not really as an attempt to hide his voice from the class.
"I didn't 'leave it out.' I had it on my desk as I was going through it, but it's not like I left it there."
"Okay, but you still left my book out. I told you-"
"Oh my god, Dad, stop," Castiel complains. "I won't bring your books to school anymore, okay? You know, if you actually get a chapter done by the end of the year."
"Really, Castiel? You're gonna go there now?"
"Yes. Yes I am gonna go there now," Castiel replies without hesitation.
"Is this what your house is like all the time?" Kevin asks, interrupting their miniature argument.
"Basically," Castiel admits.
"It gets worse when you have the other eight," Chuck adds.
"Correction: It gets worse when you add Lucifer, Gabriel, or Balthazar," Castiel says. "You don't need all eight."
"Anyway, back to the real reason I'm here," Chuck says, his eyes landing on the only girl in the room. "Charlie, I'm assuming?"
She nods. "Um, yeah. Why?"
"You're the Wayward Nerd girl, right?" he guesses again.
"Um... Yes?" she repeats, less certain this time. Castiel can't blame her. It must feel weird when someone you don't really know knows your email.
"Sorry, that may have sounded kind of stalkerish," Chuck admits. "I'm not a stalker, I swear."
"Good to know."
"Anyway, Castiel told me he knew you, and emailing is boring, so I decided to crash the class and here I am," Chuck explains. "So, do you really think Supernatural fanfics don't mean anything? Compared to the story, I mean?"
Charlie shakes her head. "Not really. I mean, they're fun to read. They have some of the best ideas-like Destiel and Sabriel-"
"Sabriel?" Chuck repeats. "I haven't heard of that one."
"Sam and Gabriel," Charlie clarifies. She looks over at Sam. "Hey, you're friends with Gabriel! And your brother is Dean, and he's dating Castiel! It's almost like this is a Supernatural fanfiction or something!"
"Don't be ridiculous," Kevin replies. "There's no way this is a fanfiction."
"Fine. Be a hater," Charlie says as she mock glares at him. She laughs and turns back to Chuck.
"Where did Sabriel come from?" Chuck asks, sounding genuinely interested instead of thinking it's ridiculous like Castiel does.
"It comes from the fact that they clearly like each other!" Charlie replies as though it's the most obvious thing ever. "I mean, that part where Gabriel kept killing Dean? He wanted to teach them that Dean is Sam's weakness and Sam is Dean's weakness, but he couldn't bring himself to kill Sam. Instead, he killed Dean a bunch of times so that Sam wouldn't die! And then when he put them in Doctor Sexy M.D., he shot Dean, not Sam, so Sam didn't get hurt. And then when they realized he was an angel and Dean threatened to dunk him in holy oil and light him on fire,  he looked at Sam. He wanted to see if Sam would stop him, because Gabriel thought he would. So maybe Sam doesn't like Gabriel, but Gabriel sure as hell likes him."
Chuck raises an eyebrow. "Wow. Maybe they do like each other!"
Castiel gives him a confused look, knowing that he doesn't usually go by fan's ideas. Still, even Castiel has to admit that's compelling. Completely over analyzed, but compelling nonetheless.
"And Destiel?" Chuck asks, clearly expecting a much better thought out explanation because they're together so much. If she can make that much out of four appearances, then two fifths of the books must be an amazing explanation.
"Do I even have to explain this one?" Charlie asks. "It's just obvious! Like, even through the book I can feel the way they look at each other! And then there was the fact that, oh, I don't know... How about perfect Castiel rebelling from Heaven, the only home he's ever know and the only family he's ever loved, to be with Dean? That's proof enough right there. They love each other!"
"But how do you know he didn't do it to save the world?" Chuck challenges. "His motives are pure. He's said it before. Actually, that was one of the unpublished ones, but still. Maybe he did it for the world, not Dean."
"But he said, and I quote, 'I'm hunted. I rebelled, and I did it-all of it-for you.'"
Chuck laughs. "That right there is what people do with the Bible. You just quoted Supernatural like its the holy book of your religion. That's not normal!"
"It is my religion. Well, now that you mentioned it, it is. Supernaturalism. Saving people, hunting things, the Supernatural religion."
"Wow," Chuck replies. "Just... Wow. I influenced a religion. I've never been prouder!"
Charlie laughs. "You didn't just influence it, you basically founded it! Anyway, back to the books. Is Destiel real? Were you secretly telling us Destiel was real?"
"No, I wasn't telling you it was real," Chuck says. Before Charlie can reply, he continues, "But I hadn't completely ruled out the possibility, either."
"Yes!" Charlie cheers excitedly.
"What?" Castiel demands, surprised. "But-"
"I told you!" Charlie brags to Castiel.
"But-But-But-Dad!" he whines.
"Hey, I'm the God of that world; I can do whatever I want to the characters," Chuck replies matter-of-factly.
Castiel frowns. "Yeah, but... Destiel? Seriously?"
Chuck shrugs. It's obviously not a big deal to him, which makes Castiel wonder how long he's been considering making it canon. Clearly it's not a new idea to him.
"I'm surprised you're so against it," Chuck says. "You know, since apparently there's a Destiel in real life."
Castiel chews on the inside of his cheek for a moment. There was no reason he was keeping it from his dad. He just never had the chance to tell him. Chuck must not be happy about hearing it from Charlie when Castiel should have been the one to tell him about them. He probably assumes there's a reason Castiel didn't say anything, which makes it even worse.
"Was I not supposed to say that?" Charlie asks nervously.
"No, it's fine," Castiel assures her.
"Yeah, I was just messing with him," Chuck adds, much to Castiel's relief.
"Is making fun of Cas a family favorite activity or something?" Sam asks, amused.
"Yeah, basically," Chuck admits.
"I'm the emotional punching bag," Castiel jokes. Then, as an afterthought, he adds, "And occasionally a physical punching bag."
"You seem oddly okay with that," Charlie observes.
Castiel shrugs. "I'm used to it."
"Probably not something to be proud of," Charlie says with a laugh. "You know, abuse it generally frowned on."
Castiel immediately thinks of Dean, suddenly less amused by the whole situation. With a glance at Sam, he knows he's not the only one whose mind went to the boy across the hall.
"That was a joke," Charlie says slowly, noticing Castiel's mood change. "I wasn't actually assuming-"
"Yeah, I know," Castiel interrupts, putting on a fake smile. "My mind sorta drifted. Sorry."
Chuck looks at him, clearly concerned, but Castiel doesn't respond too his worried expression. He can't say anything about what happened to Dean, so there's nothing he could tell his father.
"Everything just got depressing," Charlie observes. "I don't like this. Stop it."
"I don't think it works that way," Kevin says. "You can't just say 'Be happy' and expect people to just be happy."
"Yeah, well, I did," Charlie says. "So there. But hey, happy thought. Destiel might become canon!" She pauses. "Only there aren't anymore books so maybe not."
"Or maybe so," Chuck says, surprising both Charlie and Castiel. "I'm considering publishing the rest of the series. Not very soon, because I've got another series in the works right now that I'm editing, but after that, maybe."
"Really?" Charlie squeals. "Oh my god, yes! Do it!"
"You never told me you were planning on publishing the rest of the series," Castiel says, feeling a bit betrayed.
"What do you care? You've already read them all," Chuck reminds him.
"Well, yeah, but I still deserve to know. First you don't tell me about Destiel, then you don't tell me you might release more books?"
"You didn't tell me about Dean," Chuck counters.
"Oh my god. Daaaaad," he whines.
Chuck just smirks. "You really should've seen that one coming."
