Chapter 2
When class begins, Dean blows his whistle loudly. He loves this whistle. It's probably going to be his favorite part of being the new gym teacher. The kids all look at him, immediately silenced. This whistle is magical. The whistle practically makes him a god.
"Alright, I'm Mr. Winchester!" Dean calls out to his first block class. "I'm the new gym teacher. I don't take crap from anybody, so do what I say when I say it, or you're out of here. Okay, attendance!"
He calls out the names on his list. Crowley-his name is actually Fergus but there's no way Dean is calling someone Fergus, so he'll go by the last name-Anna Novak, Balthazar Novak, Gabriel Novak, Lucifer Novak, Michael Novak, Metatron Novak...
"Is this, like, a Novak family meeting?" Dean asks when he reads all those names.
"No, we're missing, like, half the family," Gabriel says. "One of our other brothers is next door, and there's one more brother and another sister that isn't in this class. Plus the two that have already graduated and aren't even in the state anymore."
"Damn, your family is huge!"
"I'm one of the only two girls," Anna says. "Imagine how I feel."
"You live with Lucifer," a dark haired girl reminds her. "It doesn't get much worse than that."
"Shut up, Meg," another dark haired girl growls. "She's freaking blessed."
Meg just rolls her eyes at the other girl.
"Gotta side with Meg on this one," Anna says. "Sorry, Ruby."
Dean reads the names he hasn't called out yet. Ruby and Meg are there, and Dean knows the last person is his half-brother Adam. He must have forgotten to call Adam Miller when he read the list. They don't really know each other personally, but Dean knows of him. He actually forgot Adam existed for a while. Sam probably doesn't remember him either. Everybody forgets Adam.
"This is a small class," he observes. "Which will make dodgeball even more fun!"
Everyone in the class either celebrates or groans when they hear they're playing dodgeball. Dean splits them in two teams. Lucifer, Ruby, Michael, Balthazar, and Metatron on one side, and Michael, Anna, Meg, Gabriel, and Adam on the other. It looks like a nice, fair separation, but in reality, he put everyone he thinks doesn't like Lucifer on one side. He doesn't really have a reason not to like Lucifer, but it seems like the only way to make things somewhat interesting.
Every single round, the last two people were Michael and Lucifer. Why do they always end up fighting each other? It's almost like it's they're playing the roles destiny bad chosen for them when they go up against each other. Of course, Dean's never been one to go with destiny, so when Lucifer throws a ball at him when it appears he isn't paying attention, Dean shoots his hands out and catches it.
"Out!" Dean calls, then throws the ball back in the game. "Word of advice: don't try to get the teacher out. I'm better than you all."
A/N: Let's be real, Dean seriously is better than all of us ;)
After first block, Dean goes out to the hall with his class, so he can see his little brother as he leaves his class. He watches the small number of kids leave the room, and Sam is last. The two boys share a smile as they pass each other, not wanting to draw too much attention to the fact that Sam is related to the teacher. Not many people want that going around the school.
A boy with black, casually messed up hair leaves the room last, standing in the doorway of the room across from Dean's, watching the kids flood out of it. Dean can tell by his suit and trench coat that he's a teacher. No one else dresses up for school.
"Hey, Castiel, how was class?" Gabriel asks him.
"It was fine," the dark haired boy, Castiel, replies. "How was gym?"
"Lucifer threw a ball at the teacher's face," Gabriel says, not hiding his amusement. Dean finds it sort of rude that the kid finds him almost getting hit in the face by a ball funny. Of course, Dean would have laughed if he saw it as well. Actually, Dean probably would have been the one throwing the ball.
"Of course he did," Castiel says with a sigh. "Was he okay?"
Gabriel nods. "Yeah, he's got good reflexes. He caught it."
"So, no call home to Dad?" Castiel asks hopefully. Dad? Is that their other brother? He's the teacher, though. Is their brother a teacher here?
"Doubt it." Gabriel turns around to face Dean. "Hey, is Lucifer going to get in trouble for throwing a ball at your face?"
"Nah. No one got hurt. There's no reason to make a big deal out of nothing." Dean tries not to look at Castiel as he says this, because even though he knows he seems cool and composed, in reality, being near this guy is really distracting to him. He just seems... Perfect. His perfectly messed up black hair, his perfect blue eyes, his perfect low voice, his perfect lips... Stop it, Dean. You're at work. Now isn't the time to be thinking about this.
"Great. Thanks, Mr. Winchester!" Gabriel says, then turns back to Castiel. "See ya later, Cassie."
"Bye, Gabe," Castiel replies with a wave. "If you get in trouble for being late, feel free to blame it on me."
"It's the first day; I doubt they'll care," Gabriel says as he walks away.
It's just Dean and Castiel now. None of the students have come down near the gym yet. It makes sense; the rooms are at the end of a long hallway, so the only people that are going to come down there are the ones in their classes. The two of them stand together quietly for a moment, not sure what to say.
Castiel is the one to break the silence. "Since I'm sure Lucifer didn't say it, sorry you almost got hit by a ball."
Dean chuckles. "Ah, it's fine. No harm done. I'm Dean Winchester, by the way," he introduces himself, sticking out his hand.
"Castiel Novak," he replies, shaking Dean's outstretched hand.
"They your brothers?" Dean asks with a glance at Gabriel in the distance.
"Yeah."
"Cool," Dean replies, nodding to show interest because he doesn't know what else to say.
It's quiet again, neither of them meeting the other's eyes. Dean tries to hide his disappointment. He had really hoped he and Castiel would hit it off. He seems like he could be a pretty cool guy. It's too bad that Castiel is so quiet and Dean is being so socially awkward in his presence right now.
