Chapter 17
Sam and Gabrel walk down to Castiel's room quickly when the bell rings, fortunately avoiding Jess in the process. Castiel and Dean are already in there chatting; Castiel from his spinning chair, and Dean leaning against the wall nearby. The two look over when Sam and Gabriel sit down.
"Hey, Sammy," Dean greets him.
"Hey," he replies.
"You look better," Castiel observes.
"Thanks to this weirdo," Sam says, looking at Gabriel affectionately. Gabriel beams proudly.
"So?" Gabriel says, looking between the two older brothers.
"So?" Dean replies, not sure where he's going with that.
"So, are you guys dating or what?"
Dean and Castiel share a look. Castiel shrugs, indicating that he doesn't know how to respond to that, which leaves Dean to answer. Castiel waits for his answer anxiously, not sure what Dean feels about him. It was bugging him all day, but he would never have asked himself.
"I guess so," Dean says finally.
"Yes!" Gabriel cries. "It's about damn time!"
"We all knew it was going to happen sooner or later," Sam adds.
"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" Gabriel starts chanting. Sam joins in, laughing. Castiel blushes and looks at the floor, but Dean just rolls his eyes.
"If you don't shut up, I will smash your face in," he says to Gabriel, but he's smiling, clearly finding it funny.
"Fight! Fight! Fight!" Sam chants, and Castiel laughs.
Gabriel shoots him a traitorous look before looking back at Dean with an innocent expression. "It's almost as if you don't like me."
"I wonder why," Dean says sarcastically. It's clear from his expression that the boys are amusing him, though.
"Sa-am! Your brother's being mean to me!" Gabriel complains like a little kid.
Sam laughs. "What do you want me to do about it?"
"Make him stop!" Gabriel whines.
"I can't make Dean do anything."
Castiel glances at Dean, knowing this isn't true. Sam can make Dean do anything. Dean shoots him a look telling him not to say anything, as if Castiel didn't get that from their talk earlier.
"Fine," Gabriel says, then looks at Castiel. "Cas! Your boyfriend is being a jerk!"
Castiel laughs. "And once again, what do you want me to do about it?"
"Make him stop!" Gabriel says again.
"Yeah, because I can definitely do that," he replies sarcastically.
"He's your boyfriend!" Gabriel reminds him.
Castiel grins, an idea forming in his mind. "Is this what you were looking for?" he asks. He stands up and walks over to Dean.
Dean gives him a confused look. "Cas what are you-"
He's silenced by Castiel's lips on his. Castiel can feel him smile as he kisses back. They pull apart quickly, knowing they're being watched, but they wish they didn't have to.
"No, that really wasn't what I was looking for!" Gabriel replies as if he just witnessed the murder of a billion kittens being thrown into a volcano.
"Hey, you wanted me to get him to stop talking," Castiel reminds him with a grin.
"Yeah, but not like that!" Gabriel says enthusiastically. "Quick, where's the eye bleach?" He looks over at Sam, who's laughing at him. "You're too calm right now!"
Sam shrugs. "I think it's cute. Gross, but cute."
"This is not cute!" Gabriel cries. "It's... It's..."
"Cute," Sam finishes. "It's cute."
Gabriel shakes his head as if Sam is the biggest disappointment ever. "Sam, Sam, Sam. You have much to learn."
Dean and Castiel, no longer involved in their brother's conversation, start their own quietly, still only inches away from each other.
"I thought it was cute," Dean murmurs.
"Funny, because I thought you were cute," Castiel replies with a grin.
Dean looks longingly at Castiel. "God, I wish we were alone right now," he whispers.
"Me too," Castiel agrees quietly.
"After school?" Dean suggests hopefully. "Just you and me. Okay?"
"Where would we go?" Castiel asks. "Don't forget, we both have siblings."
"We'll kick Sam over to your house," Dean says. "He'll be more than happy to go, as long as Gabriel is there. We can go back to my place, okay?"
"Didn't you tell Sam you'd hang out with him?" Castiel reminds him of what he had had said before the other two came in.
Dean frowns. "Oh, right. You can come with us, okay? And then-"
Castiel shakes his head. "No, you two go have fun with your uncle. If you still want me over later, you have my number. Call me."
"Okay," Dean agrees hesitantly. "Deal."
"And don't rush it so you can get back, okay?" Castiel adds. "You guys go have some fun. I think if nothing else, it'll help Sam out."
Dean nods. "Okay. After that, though."
Castiel smiles, glad he's looking forward to seeing him so much. "Of course."
"Hey, whatcha talking about?" Gabriel asks.
The two boys step away from each other so they're at a normal distance, annoyed at the interruption.
"Llamas in hats," Dean replies sarcastically.
"But Carl, that kills people!" Gabriel replies.
"What?"
Castiel chuckles. "'Llamas in hats.' It's a YouTube series."
"Who the hell makes YouTube videos about llamas in hats?" Dean asks.
"Who tells people they're talking about llamas in hats?" Castiel counters.
"Touché."
"I'm so confused right now," Sam says.
"Me too, Sammy. Me too."
Dean waits patiently for Castiel to get all his stuff together at the end of the day. He wants to spend as much time with him as he can, and if that means standing around doing nothing while Castiel cleans up, Dean doesn't mind. Castiel finally walks up to Dean, grinning.
"I was hoping you'd wait for me," he says.
"I was hoping you'd be hoping I'd wait for you," Dean replies.
Castiel laughs, the most amazing sound Dean's ever heard. Castiel tried to walk out of the room, but Dean blocks his path.
"Come on, don't you want to get to your uncle's?" Castiel asks.
"No, I want to stay here with you," he replies.
"I want to stay with you, too," Castiel agrees. "But we can't now. Go visit your uncle and have some fun. Then we can go hang out, okay?"
Dean frowns. "Okay," he agrees sadly. "I'll call you, okay?"
"I'll be waiting," Castiel replies. "Alright, can we leave now?"
Dean sighs. "Fine." He moves out of the doorway and they walk out to their cars together. Sam is already there, waiting for his brother. Dean suddenly realized he never told Sam where he was parked today. It's a good thing no one else drives a 1967 Chevy Impala anymore, so it was easy to find.
"Call you later," Dean says to Castiel as he unlocks his baby. The three of them get into their cars, and Dean gives Castiel one last longing look before pulling out. "Alright, Sammy. Ready to go see Bobby?"
"Yeah!" Sam says excitedly.
Dean smiles when he hears Sam's voice, no longer as sad as it had been this morning. As much as Gabriel annoys him, Dean can't help but love him right now. He's the reason Sam isn't moping around anymore. For such an annoying person, Gabriel has been great for Sam. Dean is glad he's around, though he'd never say it to the kid's face.
Dean pulls into Bobby's junkyard, which is also his repair shop. Bobby lies under one of the cars, working on it. Sam and Dean walk up to him, both glad they get to see him again.
"Heya, Bobby," Dean greets him.
Bobby wheels himself out from under the car. "Hey, boys. It's been a while. Nice to see ya again." He gets up to see them, giving them both the guy half-hug, half handshake thing. "Not that I don't love your surprise visits, but what are you two doing here?"
"We just came by to say hi," Dean replies. "Is that too much to ask for?"
"Well, since you're here, you mind giving me a hand with this?" Bobby asks him.
"Sure. What's up?"
Bobby shrugs. "I don't know. That's why I'm asking."
"Alright, let me look." He checks the bottom of the car, messes with it a little bit, and comes back out. "Try it out."
Bobby turns the key in the ignition, and the car roars to life. Bobby turns the car off and looks at Dean in wonder.
"What did you do?"
Dean shrugs. "No clue."
"No clue?" Bobby repeats. "You realize that if you broke the car, I'd have to pay for it, right? It's not mine."
"Then it's a good thing I didn't break it."
Bobby sighs. "Don't try that again. Ya hearing me?"
Dean nods. "Yeah, I get it. But hey, I fixed the car!"
Bobby frowns. "You're lucky I like you, boy."
"Everyone likes me," Dean says with a grin. "Now, are we just gonna stand out here, or...?"
"No, I'd rather you not mess up any of my cars," Bobby replies, walking through the junkyard and to the building which used to be his house until he moved in with Ellen, Jo, and Ash. The two boys follow him inside. "How have you two been?"
Dean looks at Sam to answer first, wondering how he'll respond. He never keeps things from Bobby, but at the same time, he might not want to explain everything again.
Sam shrugs. "Pretty crappy, but that's life," he replies dismissively.
"Well, aren't you all sunshine and rainbows?" Bobby says sarcastically. "What happened?"
"Nothing important," Sam says, though Dean knows it's a lie.
Bobby looks skeptical, but he doesn't question it. He looks at Dean. "How about you? Any life-altering news in your life?"
"I got a boyfriend," Dean says calmly, pretending it isn't a big deal. It really is, though. He's hooked up with a lot of girls before, but he's never felt anything towards them. Not until now, with Castiel.
"And I'm just finding out about this now?"
"We just starting dating yesterday," Dean informs him. "It wasn't even official until today. Don't worry, Bobby. I didn't just forget about you."
"I'd hope not," Bobby says. "I mean, I was your boss for years. Oh, and your unofficial uncle! So, who's the lucky guy?"
"He's the writing teacher at the school I'm working at," Dean says. "Castiel Novak. He's awesome."
"Novak?" Bobby repeats. "Where have I heard that before?"
"Probably from Sam," Dean replies. "A lot of Castiel's siblings go to that school, too. Sam's friends with his brother, Gabriel, actually. But he's probably complained about Lucifer to you before or something."
"Honestly, I'd be surprised if I haven't," Sam says. "He's basically the king of the school, in the worst way possible."
"He can't be that bad," Bobby says.
"He tried to beat Dean's head in like he was Glenn," Sam tells him.
"But I took the bat before he could," Dean adds.
"Why did he try to beat your head in?" Bobby asks.
"Because I said he was out."
"You're joking. Please tell me you're joking."
"Nope."
Bobby laughs quietly. "Why did you decide to work at a high school?"
Dean shrugs. "It seemed fun at the time."
Bobby shakes his in disappointment. "Idjit."
