Chapter 14

"Why are Mr. Winchester and Castiel in your house?" Gabriel asks Sam once they're far enough away from the doorway to the apartment that they won't be overheard. They hop in the Novak car to go back to Gabriel's house, where they just came from.
"Dean's my brother," Sam replies simply.
"Seriously? And you've never mentioned this?"
Sam shrugs. "Never really seemed important," he says.
"Yeah, except that my brother and your teacher is dating your brother!"
"Actually, that's kinda why I didn't mention it," Sam says. "I didn't want Cas to feel weird if they ended up dating, since his boyfriend's brother would be in his class."
"But wouldn't he have known from your last name?" Gabriel asks, confused.
"No, my last name is Campbell, not Winchester."
"What?" Gabriel replies, even more confused. "Why is your last name Campbell but your brother is a Winchester?"
"I took my mom's last name," Sam informs him.
"Why?"
"I just did," Sam replies, but it doesn't seem as careless as it should have. Gabriel knows there's something that Sam isn't telling him. As much as he'd like to know what it is, he won't ask. Clearly, he doesn't want to talk about it.
"Anyway, it looks like Lucifer was right," Gabriel says, changing the subject.
"Right about what?" Sam asks.
"Castiel really is hooking up with one of the teachers," Gabriel says, smirking.
Sam laughs. "Yeah, I guess so," he agrees.
"Who would've thought?"
"Knowing Dean, I'm not actually that surprised," Sam says.
"What, does he hook up with guys a lot?"
Sam shakes his head. "No, he hooks up with girls a lot," he replies. "I don't know about guys, though."
"But I thought you knew he was bi," Gabriel says.
"Two words," Sam says. "Doctor. Sexy."
Gabriel laughs. "Oh my god, he watches that show?"
"Watches it? He loves that show. He knows everything about it. It's scary."
"I can't picture that," Gabriel admits. "Mr. Winchester, the all powerful gym teacher, watches Dr. Sexy?"
Sam nods. "Yeah, I know. Crazy."
Gabriel pulls into the driveway and parks the car. As they get out, he says, "Whatever you do, do not mention what we just saw, okay?"
"I wasn't planning on it, but why?" Sam asks. "I thought you loved teasing Cas."
"Oh, we do," Gabriel replies. "Probably a bit too much, actually. But this... It's a comedy goldmine, and with a brother like Lucifer, you do not want that out there."
"Alright," Sam agrees.
Gabriel opens the door and the two of them step inside. The only people left in view of the door are Chuck typing on the computer and Michael, who's doing something at the table. They both look up when the two come in.
"Sam's staying over tonight," Gabriel announces.
"Um, sure?" Chuck replies, confused. "Why, out of curiosity?"
"His house is a bit busy right now," Gabriel replies vaguely.
"Um..." Chuck seems unable to find something to say to that. "Alright. Kick Balthazar out. Tell him to go sleep in someone else's room. Samandriel and Metatron, maybe."
"I don't think Castiel is coming back tonight," Gabriel says. "Balthazar can sleep in his room."
"Why would Castiel not be coming home tonight?"
Gabriel shrugs. "Reasons."
Michael seems to figure out what's going on, or at least partially, because he says, "Lucifer would be having a field day if he knew."
Realization dawns on Chuck's face. "Do I want to know how you know this?"
"Long story," Gabriel lies. All he would have to say is "Castiel and the gym teacher were making out," but he'd rather not relive that horrible moment. He just walked in on his brother making out with another guy shirtless. He doesn't want to think of that again.
Gabriel walks up to Michael. "Whatcha doing?"
He holds up the folded up newspaper. "Sudoko," he replies.
Sam walks up and looks at it. He scans it briefly with his eyes. "Found something."
Michael glances up at him, then looks down at the sudoko again. After a few seconds, he taps a box with his pencil. "Is it the three?"
Sam nods. "Yep. Good call."
Michael writes it in the box. From there, he fills in a bunch more boxes, just from having the three. He's stuck again, so he stares at it.
"Put a-" Sam begins, but Michael cuts him off.
"Six right here?" Michael guesses, tapping a box with his pencil again. Sam nods, and Michael fills it in.
"How are you two so good at this?" Gabriel asks as Michael fills in more boxes. "I can't even do the bronze ones."
"What's the difficulty on this one?" Sam asks.
"Gold," Michael replies without looking.
"And you did all this since we left?"
Michael nods. "Yep."
"Wow," Sam says. "You're good."
"Thanks."
"Well, that was fun," Gabriel says without any emotion, not enjoying this at all. "Come on, let's do something!"
"Like what?" Sam asks.
Gabriel shrugs. "I don't know. I have the motivation, you have the ideas. That's how this works, 'kay?"
Sam chuckles. "Alright, um... Wanna watch a movie?"
Gabriel grins. "Yeah! Come on, let's watch in my room. I've got a bunch of movies in there."
They walk down a hallway and enter Gabriel's room to find Balthazar already there, writing something on his binder.
"Hey, Balthazar, you were supposed to do your homework, like, a few hours ago," Gabriel reminds him, smirking.
Balthazar rolls his eyes and looks up at them. "Yeah, well, I didn't feel like it. What do you want?"
"Sam's staying over," Gabriel informs him. "You're in Castiel's room tonight."
"And where will Castiel sleep?" Balthazar asks.
"Not here," Gabriel replies vaguely.
"What if I don't want to move?" Balthazar challenges.
"Too bad, because Dad already said you had to."
Balthazar sighs. "Fine."
He picks up all his stuff and walks over to Castiel's room, where he's probably going to work on his homework. Gabriel walks up to the tv and picks up a few disc cases on the stand, showing them to Sam.
"Scary movie? Or funny movie?" He holds up a couple movies of each genre.
"Scary movie," Sam answers immediately. "Oh, wait, is that... Monty Python and the Holly Grail?" A huge smile appears on his face. "Changed my mind. We're watching that."
Gabriel chuckles. "Good choice," he agrees.
He puts the DVD in the DVD player and starts it before sitting on the bottom bunk of his bed, his back up against the wall. He pats the spot next to him, gesturing for Sam to join him. Sam does so without hesitation, still smiling about the movie.
Sam gets lost in the movie, laughing at all the best lines, and the scenes he knows he loves. Gabriel can't focus on it, though. He's too busy watching Sam. His smile, his laugh. Just seeing him to happy makes Gabriel have to smile, too.
Gabriel falls asleep partway through the movie, but Sam doesn't mind. It's getting fairly late, but Sam wants to finish it. He loves this movie. He watched part of it at school once, back in middle school, and he told Dean he wanted to watch the rest of it. Dean ended up stealing the DVD for him, and while their dad was passed out drunk, they watched it together on a cheap motel tv screen. Unfortunately, their dad found out about it, and it didn't end well for Dean. Sam pushes that thought out of his mind. He told himself he'd try to forget about everything that happened with their father, and for the most part, he does pretty well with it. He can usually change his train of thought whenever John Winchester pops into his mind. As far as he knows, Dean does, too. They may not forget him completely, but they're pretty damn close.
When the movie ends, Sam gets up to turn the tv off, because Gabriel didn't leave the remote near them. Since he's already up, Sam climbs up to the top bunk, so he can lie down instead of leaning against the wall like Gabriel. He lets his head fall into the pillow, which is much softer than the one he has at home. Same with the mattress, actually.
Now that Dean has a job, it's possible that they'll be upgrading the things in their small apartment, but as of right now, they're nearly out of money, and Dean's student loans are not helping the matter. On a teacher's salary, it amazes Sam they have all that they do. Dean used to have to work part time at Bobby's repair shop back when he was in college to pay for their food and their rent, because Dean wouldn't just take money from Bobby and Ellen.
Sam thinks about this a lot. Dean's done everything for him. Dean raised him, basically. Except for the few times they'd see Bobby, the only adult in their lives was their father, and he was far from a help. Dean was the one that made sure that Sam was signed up for school everywhere they went. Dean was the one that made sure Sam had enough food. Dean was the one that made sure John never laid a finger on Sam. Dean did everything he could to make sure Sam had a relatively decent childhood, and Sam could never wish for a better brother.

"Hey, Samwich, get yo lazy ass out of bed!" Gabriel calls up to him.
Sam groans and rolls over, facing away from him.
"Seriously, Sam, wake up!" Gabriel says. "We have school today."
Sam sits up slowly. He almost hits his head on the ceiling, forgetting he's so close to it. He looks down at Gabriel tiredly.
"What time is it?"
"Five thirty," Gabriel replies.
"Why are you waking me up at five thirty?" Sam whines. "I get to sleep 'til past six at my house!"
"Your house doesn't have eight other people in it," Gabriel reminds him.
"Nine," Sam corrects him. "Castiel isn't here, but I am. It's still nine."
"I love how easily you did that math though," he laughs. "Alright, come down now. I've been up for over twenty minutes. You can get up now."
Sam frowns and jumps off the bunk, not bothering with the ladder. He'd probably just lose his grip and fall anyway. Gabriel watches, amused, and leads him out of the room and into the kitchen. He hold up a box of muffins.
"Want one?" Gabriel offers.
"Do you have, like, an apple or something?" Sam asks hopefully.
Gabriel nods. "Yep. Muffins are better, but here." He digs through the fridge until he finds an apple, which he tosses to his friend. Sam catches it easily and takes a bite. The two get ready together, managing to mostly avoid the other Novaks in the process. Lucifer cracks a few annoying jokes and Balthazar complains that his temporary bedroom was too lonely, but otherwise, it's mostly quiet. Everyone still waking up, probably.
Sam finds it strange, a house so quiet in the morning. When he gets up, it's usually due to Dean blasting music as loud as he can without getting in trouble for making too much noise again, and they talk throughout the morning. Still, he knows not every house is as loud as his. Even with many more people here, there's no Dean, and he's one of the loudest people Sam knows. The only louder person he can think of is Asia when Heat of the Moment starts blasting as a wake up call. Whenever Sam hears that song, he had a bad feelings about the day.
