Chapter 11

Why is Dean always in the doorway? Why? Is there some unspoken rule that Dean has to show up in the doorway whenever Castiel least wants him to? Which is basically always?
"It looks like a party in here," he remarks. "Did my invitation get lost in the mail?"
"You're welcome to join us," Castiel says. "But we're not really doing anything."
"It sounds like you guys were having some fun," he says, obviously referring to the minor argument he witnessed. It really was minor, compared to a lot of fights the two get into.
"No, he was trying to make sure we didn't have fun," Anna replies jokingly.
"It wasn't working," Sam adds.
"Actually, it was doing the opposite," Charlie says.
"I noticed," he laughs.
"Don't just stand in the doorway!" Jess says. "Come on in!" She waves him in. Dean looks at Castiel, as if silently asking if he's welcome. Castiel gives him a small shrug. Why not? He wasn't planning on talking anyway.
Dean walks in, but there's no chair for him to sit in. He stands against a wall, which would have looked awkward if it were Castiel, but Dean manages to make it look cool.
"So, what are we going to talk about now?" Charlie asks.
No one seems to have an answer. Castiel picks up his book again to read. Anna gets up, walks over to him, and calmly takes the book out of his hands.
"No. Bad Castiel. Be social," she scolds him, but she's grinning.
"Why would I do that?"
"Because I said so."
Castiel rolls his eyes. "Fine, Mom," he says sarcastically. The comment isn't based on their actual mom, but "Because I said so" is the most stereotypical mom comment ever.
"What are you reading?" Dean asks.
"Supernatural," Castiel replies.
"For, like, the fiftieth time," Anna adds.
"Seventeenth!" he corrects her.
"Why would you read a book seventeen times?" Dean asks.
"It's a good book," Castiel replies with a shrug.
"But good enough to read seventeen times?"
"Yep."
"Wow, I might have to read that," Dean says.
"But you don't read," Sam reminds him. "Like, ever."
"I read!" Dean protests.
"Yeah, the labels on food until you find one that says 'pie.'"
"Ah, true," Dean admits with a laugh. The room lapses into silence again, broken by Dean when he says, "So, this is the legendary Castiel's class? It's a lot quieter than I expected."
"It's usually way more fun," Charlie says. "People are just being boring right now."
"Cough cough Cas cough cough," Anna adds, not even faking the cough. She just says the word.
"I don't think you understand how that's supposed to go," Sam says with an entertained smile.
The bell rings to signify the end of lunch. The kids all pile out after saying goodbye, leaving Castiel and Dean alone. It's quiet for a moment, and Dean takes a step away from the wall he's been leaning against, as if preparing to leave. He stops and looks over at Castiel, smiling in almost a flirtatious way. It can't be, though, can it?
"I've got to say, I was a bit disappointed in how that turned out," Dean says.
"Why's that?" Castiel asks, confused. What's he talking about, anyway?
"Well, I've heard so many awesome things about you. I was hoping I'd get to experience it for myself."
Castiel shrugs. "This is about all I do," he admits.
"I don't believe that," Dean says. "How about this? Meet me at the diner tonight. Say, six-ish? Let me get to know the real you."
Castiel chews on the inside of his cheek nervously, fidgeting with his hands. What is he supposed to say to that? He doesn't like social interactions, especially when he likes the person he would be socially interacting with. He can't say no. That would be rude. But he can't say yes, either, because he'll show up and look like a total idiot, like he always does. Still, it's better than being rude.
"Sure," Castiel replies, pretending he's more confident than he feels. Fake it 'til you make it.
"Great!" Dean says with his charming smile. "See you at six." He turns and exits the room, leaving a nervous Castiel behind him. What did he get himself into?

Dean takes deep breath as he leaves Castiel's classroom. He did it. He asked Castiel out. Not for a date-not necessarily, anyway. Either way, he'll get to see Castiel tonight. He feels a mixture of excitement and dread. What if he messes up? What if he acts like an idiot and Castiel decides he's insane and leaves? No. No, it'll be fine. It'll be fine. He repeats it in his head until he starts to believe it, and he leaves the room. Right around the corner is Sam, Jess, Gabriel, Charlie, Kevin, and Anna, all smirking.
"Ooh, you're gonna get some!" Sam laughs.
"Shut up, Sammy," Dean growls.
"Where's the fun in that?"
Dean glares at him. Why did he decide to work in the same school his brother goes to? Sam is going to be the death of him.
"Bitch."
"Jerk."
Sam and Gabriel meet up after fourth-and last-block. Their rooms are next to each other, so it's easy for them. Gabriel loves it, because he gets to talk to Sam without Jess around. He likes Jess, of course, but he wants to spend some time with Sam.
"I've got to go to the bathroom," Sam says. "Feel free to leave without me."
"Dude, you're about to go home. You're really going to use the school bathrooms?" Gabriel asks. "You realize secondhand smoke is worse than actually smoking. Do you have a death wish?"
"I would've gone during lunch, but I wanted to get to Cas' room," he says. "I can't wait 'til I get home."
Gabriel rolls his eyes. "Nothing would make me use school bathrooms," he says. "But if you're that desperate, be my guest. I hear there's a secret bathroom no one goes to. It's probably the one you're least likely to grow a third eye from."
Sam laughs, a sound Gabriel will never grow tired of. "Where's that?"
"Come on, I'll show you."
Gabriel leads him down a few hallways, hoping this bathroom is real and not just a fable. He really hasn't used the school restrooms before, so he doesn't know. Sure enough, there is a bathroom. Sam tells Gabriel he can go now, but before Gabriel can respond, there hear a moan in the men's bathroom. They share a curious look before Sam cautiously pushes the door open. They both step inside slowly and quietly and look around the corner.
There's a boy pushing a girl up against a wall, kissing passionately. They're both completely absorbed in each other-it's clear even to the two bystanders. They both immediately recognize the guy as Azazel, one of the biggest players in the school. He loves to put stuff in people, to put it lightly. (Demon blood, duh!) Who's the girl, though?
They decide silently that it isn't worth trying to figure out-he's been with half the girls at school. One more won't make a difference. They turn to leave, Sam's desperate need to go to the bathroom apparently vanished, when they heard a voice they both recognize immediately.
"Sam?"
Both the boys stare at her as Azazel steps away, seeming confused and upset at the interruption.
"Jess?" Sam says, seeming too surprised to say anything else.
"Sam-"
Sam shakes his head, seeming to figure out what is going on. "No, don't." He turns to leave quickly, and Gabriel does the same, wanting to stay with Sam.
"No, Sam, wait!" Jess calls. "I can explain. Just-"
"I don't care," Sam interrupts. "I don't want to hear it."
"Wait, Sam-"
"I said I don't care!" he yells, then storms out of the room. Gabriel follows him, not wanting to leave him alone. He expects Sam to have gone far, but even though he sees Sam turn the corner when he leaves, Gabriel finds him sitting against the wall, just hidden from view of the bathroom. His head is buried in his hands. Gabriel sits next to him.
"Hey, Samster," Gabriel says softly. "You okay?" Sam doesn't reply. "Sam, do you want to talk?"
Sam shakes his head. Gabriel puts his arm around around him, and he can feel his friend's uneven breaths. Gabriel sits with him silently for a minute, letting him cool off for a moment.
"I know this isn't what you want to think about right now, but are you going to miss your bus?" Gabriel asks. Sam never mentions his family, so Gabriel doesn't know how he usually gets home, or if someone will be able to pick him up later. Sam shakes his head slightly. "Is there someone here waiting for you that you need to call or go to?
Sam nods. He looks up, his head out of his hands. He looks over at Gabriel, revealing his tear-stained face.
"Can you stay here with me?" Sam asks quietly.
"Of course, Samwich," Gabriel says with a small smile, hoping it will cheer Sam up a little. "I've just got to text my dad. You should text someone too. Make sure they know you're okay."
Sam nods. "Yeah," he agrees quietly. They both text their respective guardians to tell them they'll be staying at school late. The two boys sit together for a while in silence. Neither of them know what to say. Finally, Sam speaks.
"Three years," he says finally. "We were together for three years."
"I know, Samster," he says quietly.
"I just... I can't believe she would do that."
Gabriel nods sympathetically. "So, what are you going to do?"
"I don't know," Sam admits. "I just..." He sighs. "I just don't know anymore. We've been together for so long. The one thing that I've known for sure these last three years is that I will always have Jess. Now I don't."
"So, you're breaking up with her?" Gabriel asks. He had sort of hoped in the back of his mind since the day he met Sam that this would happen, but not this way. He didn't want it to go down like this.
"As far as I'm concerned, she broke up with me," Sam says.
The two lapse into silence again. Finally, Sam sighs.
"We should go now," Sam says.
"Are you sure?" Gabriel asks. He's enjoying staying with Sam. Seeing him sad hurts him, though.
"Yeah," Sam says.
"I guess I'll call my dad to pick me up," Gabriel says, mostly talking to himself.
"Um, Gabe?" Sam says quietly.
"Mm-hmm?"
"Can we go somewhere? I want to get my mind off this, at least for now."
Gabriel nods. "Of course, Samoose. Where do you want to go?"
"The diner?" Sam suggests. "I'm in the mood for some food."
"I don't have any money on me," Gabriel tells him.
"Don't worry, I'm sure Ellen would pay."
The two of them walk to the diner together. They don't say anything on the way, and Gabriel can tell his mind is still on Jess. Gabriel hopes he can change that once they get to the diner. It's about a half an hour walk, but they eventually arrive and head in.
"Hey, Sam," Ellen greets him. "What are you doing here so early?" She seems to notice the tear stains, because her face softens and she says, "Are you okay? What's wrong?"
"Jess," he says quietly.
"What happened? Did you guys have a fight?"
"I don't want to talk about it," he mutters.
Ellen nods sympathetically. "Alright. Well, come on, I'll go get you something to eat. Ice cream sundae?"
"Thanks," Sam says, giving her a grateful smile, though it was clearly fake.
"What about your friend?" Ellen asks, looking at Gabriel. "You want anything? On the house."
Gabriel shrugs. "I guess I'll have what he's having."
"Sure. You two have a seat. I'll be back in a minute."
Ellen disappears, and Sam and Gabriel find a table to sit at. They sit across from each other at a small table near the entrance.
"Hey, Samoose, cheer up! Ice cream!" Gabriel says enthusiastically, hoping he will at least smile. He doesn't.
"Are you going to make me use some cheesy jokes?" Gabriel asks. He doesn't get an answer. "Alright, fine. How much did it cost for the pirate to get his ears pierced?" Sam shrugs. "A buccaneer! No? Okay, okay. My neighbor started making bird puns all the time. Well, toucan play at that game. Huh? Yeah?" He notices Sam start to smile, but he hides it behind his hand. Gabriel grins. "Ha! I got you! You liked that one. It was good, right?"
"No, it was really, really not good," Sam replies, but his smile has gotten bigger, and it's clear he didn't hate it.
"Really? Then why are you laughing, huh?"
"Because it was so bad!" Sam replies, sort of laughing now.
"You thought it was awesome, don't deny it," Gabriel says.
"No, I really, really didn't!" he says, full on laughing now. Gabriel starts laughing too, just because Sam is. He got Sam to laugh. That's a good first step to making him forget about Jess.
Ellen returns with two ice cream sundaes. They're huge-big enough for at least two people each. Gabriel's mood brightens even more just by laying eyes on them.
"You look like you just found the doorway to Heaven," Sam laughs.
"I think I might have!" he jokes.
Ellen grins. "You two enjoy your ice cream. And no frowning, okay? Be happy. You've got ice cream."
"That's what I said!" Gabriel says.
She laughs. "Oh, I'm Ellen, by the way," she says. He already knew that from when Sam told him yesterday.
"Gabriel," he replies.
"Hey, Gabriel, nice to meet you," Ellen says with a smile. "I've got a feeling I'll be seeing a lot of you." She walks away, leaving the two boys behind her with their ice cream. Gabriel watches as Sam digs into his food, a huge smile on his face. Gabriel hopes it will stay that way.
