you and finn had never been anything more but really close friends, despite your hidden and buried feelings for one another.
finn was a popular actor, always being tossed around from movie set to different filming locations.
he was your best friend, so when you heard that he was making a pitstop at your house, you were really excited.
your families had been close friends for years, so they trusted finn to sleep in your room in the same bed like you two used to when you were kids.
but finn had always been a quiet and down-to-earth kind of guy, with a sense of humor and a smile that always had you smiling as well.
that's part of the reason you fell so hard for him. you two had great chemistry from your childhood, and you had feelings for him, but you would never admit that.
you two knew each other very well, so it was no surprise when he didn't talk much to you or showed much emotion for that matter.
but you couldn't lie.
it hurt to see someone show no emotion whatsoever when you hadn't seen them in forever.
it hurt to see that finn didn't seem all that excited to see you, and you didn't understand why.
so it was an awkward situation when your mother asked where he would be sleeping.
"alright, what's the sleeping arrangements for tonight gonna look like?"
your mom asked, setting down her wine glass after taking a sip before looking across the table at you all.
finn sat across from you, his eyes glancing around the table through his curls before they landed on you.
he stared at you with intense admiration when you weren't looking, and always averted his gaze from you whenever you looked towards his direction.
there was no doubt that the feelings you had for finn were mutual.
he felt the same about you, but with all his work and constant business, he was just too distracted to see that.
now that things are slowed down—for tonight anyways—he got the chance to catch up with his thoughts and emotions.
it was odd—the way you two danced around the fact that everyone except you two could see that there was feelings shared between finn and you.
"how about eric and i sleep in the guest room, and finn can sleep in y/n's room..? like old times—.."
finn's mother began to propose the idea before she was cut short by finn.
"i'll sleep on the couch."
he stated, his eyes flickered between his dinner plate and you with your blushing complexion at his mother's idea.
he smiled to himself thinly.
he found your embarrassment cute.
"a-are you sure? i mean, you always talk on about how it's uncomfortable—.."
"i'm fine, mom. i'm not that tired anyways, and i don't want to keep y/n up."
finn said, his voice wasn't annoyed, it was concerned and empathetic.
he seemed to want to end the conversation there.
his mother got the hint, and raised her hands in a surrendering stance before continuing her previous conversation with your parents.
you had to admit, you were a little disappointed that he was so adamant that he not sleep in your room.
you were almost looking forward to it.
of course you envisioned that you two wouldn't sleep and instead be catching up with each other's lives, but you supposed finn has changed and simply didn't want to do that.
you watched finn's facial expressions carefully throughout that whole exchange, and he never seemed to be hesitant until after the conversation ended when he saw your semi-defeated look.
he felt bad, but he just wanted to avoid any possible interactions with you and the topic of feelings shared.
he was scared of that.
he was scared that his feelings for you would ruin what little friendship you two had left of your childhood.
but yet, he didn't know you felt the same way.
all while during these pondering thoughts, you both noticed that you two were staring at each other from across the table, yet you two didn't mind.
this was the longest finn had looked into your eyes in a long while, and hell, he was going to cherish it.
~
you laid atop your bed sheets— staring up at the ceiling fan while trying to focus your stare on one blade and soon losing it in the whirl.
you couldn't sleep.
not while having all these deepening thoughts in your head about finn every minute.
hell, you just wanted to talk to him about anything.
you missed him as a friend.
that's it.
after mentally working up the courage, you got out of bed to walk down the hallway that led to your dark living room to see that the tv was on and that finn was wide awake.
he saw you walk through the arch of the hallway in your nightgown, his eyes immediately widening as he sat up on the couch.
you stood there for a moment, twiddling with your fingers before reaching up to brush a strand of hair behind your ear.
"i uh..i just wanted to come and talk," you meekly spoke, almost shy of your request. "you know..like we used to..?"
finn blinked, not seeming to understand before he had a look on his face that said, ohh yeah, i remember.
he moved over to make room on the couch beside him, patting the cushion to welcome you to sit with him.
you smiled before walking over and sitting yourself next to finn so that you were facing each other—your faces only being illuminated by the tv's bluish hue.
"so, tell me how've you been?"
you started the conversation, and once you spoke those words, you begun rolling an entire snowball of memories.
you two began talking like there was no tomorrow, and it was just like old times.
finn began telling you everything that's been happening with his acting, from complicated scheduling to never seeing his parents for weeks at a time.
this was the finn you knew and loved.
"it sucks sometimes. it's not all it's made out to be at times, you know? like for example, this was one of the first times i'm seeing you in months."
finn explained, his eyes showing some sort of hurt when he said that about you.
"i'm sorry you got all that stress to deal with. can't be easy."
you sympathize, and he nods with a shrug.
"yeah, it's not..but anyways, how have things been here? everything alright?"
he asked genuinely, his eyes wide with curiosity for your wellbeing.
you shrugged, "yeah, kinda. i haven't been sleeping well though, and my nightmares are getting more frequent."
finn's eyes widened in realization, with a mixture of guilt and empathy.
"jesus, i completely forgot you have insomnia. dude, i'm sorry, i-if I had remembered, i would have said i-i would sleep in your room—.."
"it's okay, really. you've had a lot happening lately, so i didn't expect you to remember the non-important stuff."
you brushed it off like it was nothing, but finn didn't believe that it was nothing.
he felt guilty for having forgotten something about his best friend : you.
you've had insomnia since you were a kid, and have been talking about your nightmares with finn for as long as you could remember.
if he had time to talk with you, he wouldn't have forgotten that.
he had missed you, and yet his busy schedule didn't allow him time to talk or be with you.
that's why he's been forgetting.
but he couldn't be making excuses.
finn then suddenly chuckled to himself, "do you remember when we would spend the summer nights together, and we had the nightmare plan?"
finn reminisced, his lips curling in a smile with a lovestruck daze in his eyes.
you chuckled, remembering exactly what he spoke about. "yeah, the plan where whenever i had a nightmare, you would hold me in your arms and whisper my nickname over and over again.."
you smiled as you trailed off while remembering your young selves on those childhood nights.
those were the nights you so desperately missed.
"i don't even know why that worked so well but it seemed to calm you down."
finn chuckled, running a hand through his curls as he looked at you with a smile.
you knew exactly why it worked, and you were grateful that it was dark in the living room so that he couldn't see you blush.
"it was because of your voice..just knowing that you were there for me calmed me down.."
you suddenly spoke out, immediately wanting to take your embarrassing words back.
but finn ducked his head with gratitude, obviously touched that he was the reason he's cured some of your sleepless nights.
you two sat there with blushing smiles, just looking at each other with a deep fondness and gratefulness that you two were still able to connect like this.
like the best friends you two used to be as kids.
the silence that passed over you two was a comfortable one as you stared into each other's eyes—one wrong move and your lips would be touching his.
but it was then that you decided it was time to head back.
also because you heard your mother get up to go to the restroom, and if she saw you out here, she would be confused at what she saw.
but it was just a display of affection that only you and finn understood—a secret language of your childhood friendship.
you cleared your throat, "i-i should get going."
finn cleared his throat in return, nodding his head as his facial expression reddened when he realized that he was staring at you.
you got up from the couch, smoothing out your nightgown before beginning to walk back towards the hallway that led to your room.
"y/n, wait—.."
finn said, his voice making you freeze in your tracks to turn around and see him sitting on the couch with wide eyes—almost like he didn't want you to leave.
you held a hopeful gaze.
maybe he would invite you to stay with him?
"g-goodnight.."
he sputtered with an unsure voice like that wasn't really what he wanted to say, and you exhaled with defeat.
you smiled thinly before saying, "goodnight, finn."
you walked back into to your room to lay atop your bed, huffing as you smiled wildly at the reconnection with finn, feeling yourself blush.
it was on a high note that you noticed yourself dozing off into a sleep that hardly ever occurred, and into the dangers of your dreamscape.
nightmares swarmed your mind as per usual whenever you slept, and your body involuntarily beginning to writhe in fear.
you couldn't help the scared whimpers that left your mouth, the volume loud enough to reach finn's ears in the quiet living room.
he was just on the brink of falling asleep, but his eyes shot open when he heard your distressed whine coming from your room.
he knew what those were, and what they meant.
without a second thought, he got up from the couch in the living room to walk down the hallway to your open room—seeing you breathing heavily and quickly without any covers providing you warmth.
without thinking, finn walked over to your bedside, and carefully crawled into the other side of your bed—pulling the covers over you both without waking you up.
it was almost like an instinct as finn moved to come up behind you, gently pulling you closer to him by your waist so that you were safe in his arms as they draped around you.
it was standard procedure in the "nightmare plan."
he then remembered what you said about his voice soothing you, so in an attempt to calm you, he took a breath.
"shh..y/n/n..it's okay.."
his whispers were low and quiet as he held you close by your waist, his arm draped around you protectively.
"it's okay..i'm right here—i'm here.."
in a jolt, you were awakened by the sudden contact by finn—hearing his voice sent chills down your back as he spoke your nickname over and over again.
and it worked.
your shuttered breathing slowed to a moderate rate, and your body regained warmth with the covers and from finn's added body heat.
this was like second nature to you both.
"i know you're awake.."
finn whispered through a smile, feeling his hands rub your arm.
like you said, it was second nature.
your mind still flashed those images from your nightmares through your head.
you smiled weakly and meekly, nodding your head before saying, "don't leave.."
finn tensed, his cheeks reddened.
"please."
you added, enjoying the feeling of being wrapped in his arms.
you were scared, but you felt safe basking in his touch.
finn relaxed his body while tightening his grip ever so slightly around your waist to pull you even closer to his body, saying, "always."
he exhaled as he buried his nose into your hair by your neck, sending chill down your spine while you relaxed into his touch.
you missed this feeling with him.
the feeling of home..
