I don't know how long I was passed out, but when I gain conscious, my mom is there with my little brother, and I am in my bedroom. It's late, but the lights are just dim enough that I can see my mom's hovering over me, her shadow blocking out the little light from above. I cough and Mom starts talking.
"Oh my god, Cari I am so sorry! It was so dark I couldn't see you, and when I heard noise I freaked out and accidentally shattered the light bulb above me. Sweetie, are you okay, can you hear me?"
My mom proceeds to stick a thermometer in my mouth, check my temperature, look in my ears, and obsess over everything in a few seconds.
"MOM. I'm fine. I was just passed out for a little bit." I reply, irritated.
"I'm so sorry!" She repeats, freaking out a little. Mom walks out before she notices the slip of paper sticking ever so slightly out of my pocket.
"What's that?" She asks me. I roll over slightly on my side, hiding the note under the soft, warm blankets.
"What note?" I play dumb and pretend to not know what she means.
"I never said anything about a note. Cari Elizabeth Webber what are you hiding from me?" She places her hands on her waist, her face looking down at me sternly. Oh shoot. I have absolutely no idea what to do, so I roll over and pretend to be asleep. I know she won't be convinced, but I even add in some fake snores. Mom obviously doesn't believe me, but she walks out of my bedroom, the door automatically sliding behind her. After about 3 minutes, my door locks. Every night, at the city curfew, the doors all lock, and the houses retreat to their resting spots in the sky.
I get up and sit cross-legged on the bottom of my floor. The carpet rolls to the side of my room and I watch as the ground grows further and further away. The empty sidewalks look so peaceful as empty cans and plastic bags blow around in the wind. I glance a bit to the right to see the lights from the capital shining against the dark sky like stars.
I remember Lily saying that she saw a star once. She described it as "a ball of light shining so brightly". Mom says that people used to look up at the sky all the time, and see stars twinkling up there. But the pollution on Earth has gotten so bad now, that we can't enjoy something so simple. Grandma used to say when she was little, she would wish upon them. I sigh. How much I would pay to live only a day 100 years ago.
I tug on my floorboard until it comes lose. Inside is a picture that I once found in my mom's room. It shows a family, in front of a sidewalk with pink trees running down either side. They're all smiling happily and a yellow-ish dog sits in front of them all. The family consists of a mom, a dad, two little girls and a boy.
The mother has her golden hair down, and it cascades down her chest, over her white dress. Her blue eyes are sparkling, surrounded by smile creases. Her soft pink lips reveal a smile that shows a small dimple in her left cheek. On her right is the man.
He has messy brown hair and a huge smile. Just like the mother, he has smile creases around his chocolaty brown eyes.He is in a black tuxedo, and has one foot rested on a large rock, causing him to appear as if he is kneeling. The man has his arm rested on his knee, and by his position and appearance, I can tell he is a joking, fun person.
Closer to the man is a little boy. He is an exact, miniature replica of the father. He has his hands thrown in the air and has a wide, toothy grin that stretches across his face. His little curls are flying everywhere, and his hazel eyes are gleaming.
On either side of the mother are two girls. They are quite apparently twins and look to be about 5. They are holding each other's hands, and their blue dresses are flying in the wind. One has seafoam green eyes, the color of the ocean. The other girl has pale blue eyes that are almost white. It is quite apparent that she is blind. She has a confused expression on her face, as if she is lost. The rest of the family is smiling, except her. Her sister and her both have short blond-ish hair.
This is a picture from before Dad left. The woman is Mom. The man is, well, Dad. The young little boy is Aaron, and the girls are me and....her.
I place the picture back in it's safe hold within my floor. I wish our family was perfect again. Smiling, happy, and eccentric. I haven't seen my mother smile in what, 10 years? I look out my window again. For about a split second I catch a glimpse of a light twinkling through the brown sky.
That night I dream of our family how it used to be. And......Majie.
