@MayFreighter
MayFreighter is an amazing account home to books such as 'Russian Roulette' which has 357k reads. It was so great to interview them and here is what they had to say!
Why did you start writing on Wattpad?
I started writing on Wattpad because a friend of mine on FictionPress told me about it, so I joined back in late autumn of 2014. There was a story I wanted to get eyes on to see if any of my ramblings were any good. It's nice to know that people did enjoy the Helena Hawthorn Series while the books were available on here.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
From the world and people around me. Sometimes, I find inspiration in dreams or music videos. When we close ourselves off from the world, there is much we miss out on. Since I became a writer, I had to fill many characters' shoes. Every single one of them is special to me and, occasionally, I wish they were real. This does mean I miss out on meeting new people in real life and sacrifice endless hours to editing/proofreading/cover design/writing instead of visiting places.
Which book has been the most fun to write?
Probably the book I'm currently editing, Crumbling Control (Helena Hawthorn Series Book 3). Right now it's in pre-order on Amazon. In it, I had a lot of fun blowing things up, having characters make grave sacrifices, changing people from "evil" to "good" and vice versa. Though, I am a firm believer that there are no truly evil or good characters. It's their choices that shape them, and, at the end of the day, they will most likely choose to protect their values and themselves.
This book allowed me to get to know my characters better and surprised me in places. Every now and then comes a scene where the characters make a choice you didn't expect or say things that create more lore you didn't plan. It's exhilarating and annoying; definitely made me rewrite some scenes.
What's the best part about writing on Wattpad?
It's a good platform to grow your confidence as a writer and meet people with the same interests. It can be tough going. When I started, it took me seven months to gain 200 followers (and most of them I was following back). After that, I got featured by Wattpad and stopped counting. But, those first few months were painfully hard on the morale. You never know if your story is any good, especially when you get no feedback or votes. I am very thankful to WP for featuring Russian Roulette when they did. It has really boosted my self-esteem as a writer and helped me in my career as an author. So, if you're reading a story you're enjoying, give that person a vote and a comment. It will help them write more and you get to read more. That's a fair trade, right?
Do you plan on writing any more books in the future?
Of course. I think I have 10+ books planned for Helena Hawthorn Series, then two spin-off series being plotted. On a side, there is my Annalise Storm Chronicles (Sci-fi/Mystery/Romance) I have yet to finish writing as well. Last time I counted, I had over 60 books waiting to be written. I'm going to be busy for a while.
My lifetime goal is to publish 100 books. I'm not kidding.
What's the hardest part about writing on Wattpad?
Initially? Finding people to read your story and give honest feedback. There are a lot of silent readers. They will stealthily read your story and disappear without a vote, comment, or even a hello. Sadly, most of my readers were like that. In the end of the day, WP is a site filled with competition. Those with active and chatty readers shoot to the top and those without them remain buried.
And finally, what advice would you give to a new writer on Wattpad?
It will be hard to find your audience, but don't give up. Join chats in the forums, make friends, and most importantly, work on your craft. Writing a story is part of the job. You mustn't forget to put in the effort and use proper grammar. If you aren't sure about something, look it up. Google and style manuals are my best friends. If you're stuck on your story, take it apart and get an opinion from others. Does the plot make sense? Are the characters strong enough to carry the book? Do you still enjoy writing the story? Can it be improved?
We are often blind to our faults. Some typos and errors will sneak into the first draft even if you read it three times. For your current and future readers, do your best so they have to worry less about the bad spelling and grammar and enjoy the story you're trying to tell them. I'm sure a few will creep up in this interview :P
