@hjnelson

hjnelson is an account home to the amazing 'The Last She' which has 2 million reads and she has 65.7k followers at the minute! It was great to interview her as I love her books and this is what she had to say!

Here's a pic of me and my devious cat, Oliver ;D

Why did you start writing on Wattpad?

I always loved stories and always wanted to be an author. It was my secret dream that I think a lot of us have as kids, but one day grow up and set aside. Wattpad seemed like a very low-stakes places to just put one of my stories out there- I never expected people would actually read them!!

The Last She has done extremely well in the Science Fiction genre, where did the inspiration for the book come from?

Let me tweak Thomas Edison's words and say, "Writing is one percent inspiration, ninety nine percent perspiration!". So don't be fooled, writing is hard work! Inspiration was a small part of the process. That being said, I've always loved post-apocalyptic stories, and I was fascinated by the idea of one female left of Earth.... What would she feel like? How would she survive? I also spent a lot of my childhood backpacking and camping with my dad, and that was a large part of the story.

What advice would you give to people who want to start writing Science Fiction?

The same advice I would give any writer. Write as honestly as you can, and write because you love it and have a story that needs to be told. I love Science Fiction in particular, because we have the opportunity to build a different world than the one we live in, and make it real with our words.

What's the best part about writing on Wattpad?

The readers! I can't read comments in public anymore, because sometimes I burst out laughing. My readers are the greatest!! I've learned so much from them, most importantly to believe in my story and myself as a writer. I think writing can be a really lonely occupation, so I love the community that Wattpad creates.

How did it feel to hit 1 million reads for the first time?

Awesome! Almost as good as hitting 2 Million! (3M, we're coming for you ;)

Have you got any books that you're planning for the future?

Yes..... too many XD I have five or six different books, all of varying genres, that I am dying to write, but I've learned the hard way that I can only work on one project at a time. Sadly, I have a paying job too!

What's the hardest part about writing on Wattpad?

Sometimes I think that my readers don't understand how much work and time I put into chapters. It's hard to explain to people that I don't get paid for this. I have a job and a life too!

Also, some people don't seem to realize I am a human. Words have power, and sometimes people are very careless with them. The vast majority of my readers are wonderful, insightful, lovely people, and I adore their comments, but every now and then I'll have someone post some really nasty stuff. But I guess all you can do is shake it off. Haters gonna hate. (and now you have Taylor Swift stuck in your head, hehe)

And finally, what advice would you give to a new writer on Wattpad?

Write because you love it! Also, develop discipline. The Last She only came about because I committed to writing a chapter a week, and sometimes that was really hard to do.
