@Drowninganocean
Drowninganocean is an amazing writer on Wattpad, and has written books such as 'Ocean Eyes' which has 3k and is being entered into the Wattys 2017. It was a pleasure to interview them and this is what they had to say!
Why did you start writing on Wattpad?
I started writing on wattpad because all my life, writing has been my creative and emotional outlet. When I started my most popular book, Ocean Eyes, I was a 14 year old in the hospital, going through some rough times. I wanted to write a story that people would be able to resonate with. Letting people know that they're not alone has always been my main goal for me when writing.
Which book has been the most fun to write?
My favorite book to write has been Ocean Eyes, by far. It's also the first and only book I've fully completed, so that contributed to my overall pride for it.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from my own negative thoughts, and listening to other people's stories about their struggles with depression. It always flips the creativity switch inside my mind, and I love to know that I can write something that somebody else will be able to relate to.
What's the best part about writing on Wattpad?
Personally, the best part about writing on wattpad is the instant exposure to the community. When you publish books, you don't get the same direct interaction with your readers. Here, I'll publish a new chapter and I'll be able to see my readers comments straight away. I love the wattpad community so much because they're all just a bunch of people who love to read and write that are supporting each other.
What's been your proudest moment on Wattpad?
My proudest moment on wattpad so far has been when Ocean Eyes hit 1K reads. I actually remember what I was doing and feeling at that moment; it was that important to me. I was in my first period class learning about urban developments. I kept eagerly refreshing my wattpad, and when I finally hit 1K, I cried. No joke.
And finally, what's your advice to a new writer on Wattpad?
The biggest piece of advice I would give to a new writer on wattpad is to NOT GIVE UP. If you love writing, if you love what you're doing, don't stop just because you feel you don't have enough exposure. I've been in that situation many times, and you have to learn to push through the droughts. It's so easy to become overwhelmed by your own pessimism. Gaining reads and popularity is always hard to do as a beginner, and many people give up when they aren't satisfied with the attention their writing has gotten. There's been many times when I would publish a chapter just to have it rack up 3 or 4 reads. Having great commenters always makes things easier, and I definitely have a few of those. There's this girl, Amanda, I always laugh at her comments. My readers interaction with my stories gives me motivation to continue, so if you're a new writer, try to gain at least one or two "loyal" readers. They make all the difference. And always remember: power to the local dreamer.
