Descriptive Phrases and Clichés

Clichés

Let's face it, clichés can be pretty annoying at times, especially when they're used several times in a single chapter, or even when used multiple times in a book. It gets boring to hear the same old thing that's been said many times by other people.

Instead of using an overused phrase, invent something new and replace the dull sentence.

Example:

Cliché phrase: It is what it is

Fixed: A rhino ain't a wombat

It's a goofy, funny, random way to say something can't be something else. 'It is what it is' is so overused; I hate hearing it.

My mother said it all of the time when I was younger.

Descriptive phrases

Without descriptive phrases, reading and writing would be BEYOND boring. Descriptive phrases create imagery and paint a picture for the reader to help them enter your book's world and make them fall in love with your amazing writing.

Take a boring sentence and turn it into something beautiful.

Example:

Bad: The night sky was dark blue.

Fixed: The midnight sky was a deep navy blue splattered with stars.
