Cliché #135: the MC always studied English at college (and they usually go to an Ivy League school)

I sighed as I sat at my usual desk in math. My high school was full of idiots and wannabes, and I couldn't wait for the 6 months till graduation to pass. My heart beat in excitement at college. Next year, I would be attending Harvard to major in English, and I had a full-ride scholarship so I wouldn't even have to pay for anything! I've always wanted to become either an English teacher and influence the next generation or a writer.

I facepalm every time I read this type of description. First of all, there are a crap ton of other majors people! Second of all, Harvard (being an Ivy League institute) does not offer merit based scholarships, only need-based. And unless the MC is homeless with no parents and no stable income (which she never is, she's always at least lower middle class, never truly lower class) there's no way she wouldn't have to pay for at least a part of her tuition or other college expenses.
