Cliché #26: the tragedy of romance novels
"I can't believe you cheated on me! I loved you!" Katie shrieked at Tom as tears welled up in her orbs.
Without another word, Katie turned and blindly ran away from Tom. Suddenly a car appeared out of nowhere and plowed into Katie, throwing her body across the street.
"No!" Tom yelled. He ran over to Katie's unconscious body.
"I'm so sorry, Katie! I love you! I know I cheated on you and treated you like shit this whole time, but I swear that's just how I show my love!" Tom yelled down at Katie.
"Oh my gosh!" The driver of the car stumbled out, horrified. "Call 911!"
"Shut the fuck up, I'm trying to proclaim my love because apparently I can only realize I love Katie when she's about to die!" Tom shouted at the driver.
Suddenly, Katie awoke even though she had just been hit by a car that had been going 150 mph. She smiled at Tom.
"Babe, those were such kind words. I love you! Let's get married!" she said to Tom.
And the two lived happily ever after.
I don't know why, but I've read a lot of romance books where everything's going pretty good until shit happens and then the main character almost dies in front of their love interest but of course they somehow survive and then everything is just peachy afterwards.
