slightlyhumble Presents: "Oh my Lord, it's Diversity!"
It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength. - Maya Angelou
PS: Please disregard all of Cara's grammatical errors if you do see them. Since she is currently struggling with staying up late to study for exams she doesn't always see every error. So grammar doesn't count.
Team coffee all the way.
Hello! My name is Cara! How are you today?
Good? I hope you are, haha. But I have a question when you went out today, can you tell me how many non-white people have you seen? Did you see a lot?
Yes? We see so many different races every day, and if not: you all know that we live in a world with not just one race, right?
You know I am right, right? We will just say I am correct, okay? Deal? Deal.
But here we go! Writing diversity isn't a writing style! No. It. Is. Not. Get. It. Right.
I genuinely hate it when people say writing POC characters and their cultural problems is a form of writing. It's not. Do you have white lead characters and their problems as a "form of writing?"
It doesn't make sense, you know? I mean if it makes sense, I just want to know how. I am curious.
I mean - I am over here dying from the hypocrisy - can you see my point? But okay, you still have your head stuck in a hole where common sense doesn't exist.
OKAY ALRIGHT KIDDOS, THAT'S RIGHT, LET'S GET EDUCATED!
Kpop. Oh my lord. OMFG. I like kpop, and in fact I love kpop, but guess what? There is a line. When you're writing about Korean culture or well ANY CULTURE, please do research.
I am just taking kpop and korean culture as an example because of how much I have seen it around wattpad or well in general. K-wave in general.
For example, the word "oppa" isn't some cute endearment, it's a way for a girl/woman to call a boy/man who is older than her respectfully when they're talking. If you have a better explanation please tell me, I'm not Korean, but I do like to study the culture.
It's apparently a trend these days for people to use Asian people in books, guess what? I LOVE IT! Why? Because I am Asian, and I love seeing my culture and where I am from in books!
You getting me?
Where is my Asian Squad? Yes, Asia is consisted of other countries than China, Korea, and Japan.
But my only problem is when people don't do it right. Study their culture, study the way they say things, study their lifestyle. I know westernized asians or as the weird kids in my school call them, "white washed asians" are different from where you'd find them in their home country - that's a GIVEN.
So it makes sense that if your character who lives in a western country acts different from someone you'd find in their home country, but there culture isn't completely tarnished, it's just a little more adapted to the western society. (I don't know how to put it)
BUT TO SUM THIS UP : USE ASIANS - yes! DISREGARD CULTURE - no.
Promise me one thing? JUST RESEARCH THE CULTURE BECAUSE IF YOU DON'T well buddy, I suggest you take down the book and re-edit it. You're not really respecting our culture, are you then? SO I BEG YOU - JUST DO SOME GOD DAMN RESEARCH!
If you left....
WHAT I AM SAYING TO YOU IS NOT MEANT TO DISCOURAGE YOU FROM WRITING WHITE MC'S!
A story of mine called, Until The Last Petal, has three white main characters, but it also has two poc's and a couple more poc's as supporting characters. - minor self promotion : it's a beauty and the beast retelling.
What I want people to get from this little message of mine is that it is okay to write diversity! Please do! Write it! Love it! Enjoy it! But don't degrade them.
My last topic → why I even decided writing on wattpad:
If I am going to be honest with you, there was a time when I started reading where I felt discouraged about reading most books. Why? Because I didn't relate to the slightest, I've lived a whole life - and well still living a whole life - full of those "Asian expectations" and that stereotype. I guess that was why I started writing on wattpad.
I mean also because I like breaking stereotypes and cliches, lmao, but that's beside the point.
STAYSEXY GUYS! I know you all are, no matter what race, age, weight, height, intelligence, anything. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. OF. YOU. IS. BEAUTIFUL.
Author's note:
Would you like some help in learning culture? As a poc myself, I am here, and so many are as well!
Okay but some of you kpop fans are going to ask me sooner or later, I stan: EXO, Big Bang, Super Junior, SF9, BTOB, MONSTA X, SISTAR, 2NE1, Red Velvet, SHINee, GOT7, NCT, and f(x). That's it, thank you!
Did you enjoy it?
Do you have any questions?
Currently if you want to check out my works, two of my completed (or about to be) are now unpublished because I am editing them, so my new books are up! I hope you do check out my works, but of course they are not mandatory.
xoxo,
cara
