Ideas And Inspirations + Bonus Chapter From The Other Side

GarciaCreations

Hello everyone! My name is Cruz, otherwise known as GarciaCreations here on Wattpad. For those who don't know me, I'm a somewhat new Wattpad writer. My main ongoing story is The Other Side, it's a fantasy story about a boy named Jesse who is an artificial human made from magic. He goes on a journey through the town of Oasis to try and find the story behind his creation. While in search for the truth, he often crosses into a parallel universe of Oasis that's filled with mysterious magic and strange creatures named The Other Side. Along with Jesse, is the second protagonist Gavriela (Gavi for short.) She has had some family situations lately, and although she tries to shrug it off and move on, she doesn't realize there's some supernatural reasons as to why her life is falling apart. She meets with Jesse, and reluctantly agrees to help him. As they start finding the truth, they get swept into bad, dangerous things that puts their lives and Oasis itself in danger.

That's just a brief summary of my story, I hope you found it interesting. Now before I go on to talk about my inspirations behind The Other Side, I just want to give a quick thank you to our lovely host Kelly Anne Blount. Thank you for this honor and amazing opportunity!

Now without further ado, what inspired me to write The Other Side? Well, the answer isn't simple. Truth be told, I wasn't always a writer. I was more of a reader than a writer. But then one day I decided to pick up a pencil (or a tablet with Google docs) and see what concoction of a story I can write. Except the only problem here is that I have no idea what to write.

So I decided to try coming up with some characters first. Again, being an amateur, they're weren't that great at first. But one small tip that has done wonders for me is to never stop asking questions about your characters. For example,

"What's your name?"

"What's your goal in life?"

"What do you dream about?"

And the most helpful one of them all, "Why?" "Why do you dream about that?" For instance.

This tip has helped me create characters that are both realistic and interesting. Though this has helped me flesh out my characters, getting ideas for my characters is another story. In the case with Jesse and Gavi, I first got the idea of creating them out of inspiration from an indie game, Undertale. Now I know it sounds cheesy but I fell in love with the characters and the story. So I created Jesse and Gavi sorta as fanfiction characters in place of Undertale's Frisk. But then I wasn't happy because I was writing with another person's work. I always knew I would write a fantasy story, and I had an idea as to how the world would work. But the two things that really inspired me to sorta model my writing world after is, again video games, Five Nights at Freddy's and Fran Bow. In both games, there are tortured creatures with a dark history behind them. And, these creatures live in place that's mostly unknown to humankind. This element stood out to me, and I decided to create my own.

Now I know some people can say how it's unoriginal but I disagree. Instead I say I'm simply creating with some inspiration from other's work.

And...I think that's about it. To end my post here tonight, I've written a chapter from The Other Side so you can see a bit of my story. It's not canon (I may reconsider) to the actual story, but it is set in my book to sorta peak your interest. Feel free to check out the ongoing book over on my account, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you and happy reading.

"It was a cold winter's night when it happened. The wind was chilly. Owls were making owl noises. And I, the young and brave Jesse, was heroically charging through the heavy snow. What happened you may ask? It was...Uh, a bad thing. A very bad thing indeed. And-"

"Jess are you done yet?" Gavi asked, tapping her fingers against her phone waiting for him to finish.

Jesse opened his mouth, ready to continue with his storytelling, but Gavi's glare told him he should stop. Immediately. "Okay okay I'm done..." He muttered.

"Good," Gavi started, with a smug smile on her face. She opened The Grand Oracle to a bookmarked page. It was an old book filled with most if not all of the magical know-how Jesse found. It's a priceless tool, one that has saved him before. Gavi opened it to the Legends and Myths section, "I've been reading about a myth called the Red Room. It's a place people mysteriously disappear to where they're tortured to death."

"S-so you think that's where the killer came from?" Jesse was trembling upon hearing the myth.

"What? No. I'm telling you about this because it says here that the people in charge of it keep potions. Love potions in particular."

"Okay? How will a love potion help us?" He noticed a blush in Gavi's cheek as she started daydreaming.

"It won't help us, but it will help me!" She was trying to hold in her excitement. "If I can get my hands on it and feed it to Nick, he'll fall in love with me!" She sighed heavily.

"Oh my gosh Gavi, I thought you were researching on the killer. We need to find him before he disappears forever you know."

"I know! But can't we just take a little side journey? Please?" She took a knee as she begged.

"Um, I'm not sure about this Gavi...I mean you've barely met Nick! And force feeding him something is a felony. I think. Besides, it's a torture chamber, we can't just waltz in there."

"Okay first of all," She stood up, "Nick is not a complete stranger. He said 'Hi' to me the other day. I'm one step closer to marrying him. And it's just a torture room with a history of manslaughter. Remember those giant yellow jackets nearly stabbing us to death? After that, I have no fear."

"Yeah but-"

"But nothing!" She stomped. "Me and Nick are meant to be together. We're basically Romero and Juliet."

"Didn't they die?"

"That's not the point! Please Jesse I won't ask for anything more!" She was back to pleading.

"That's a lie isn't it,"

"Of course it is, but please!"

"Well...okay. I'll do it for adventure and saying that I did it,"

"Whoo hoo!" She rocketed up with joy. "Let's get going right away!" She grabbed Jesse by the wrist and dragged him outside to a small clearing outside her house. He yelped when she let go. "Go ahead, do the thing,"

"What?...Oh, don't tell me..." He lost motivation when he realized where the Red Room is.

"Yep, in The Other Side. Now do the travel thing with your ruby bracelet and let's go." She was growing impatient with Jesse again.

"Okay okay I'm going, ugh not looking forward to a killing room in The Other Side of all places." He rubbed the black tinted ruby on his bracelet to activate it. "Okay let's go-"

"Wait!"

"Huh? Did you change your mind!?" His smile quickly grew from ear to ear.

"What no. I just wanted to tell you that owls go 'Hoo'."

"Who?"

"Yes, owls."

"Okay what about them?"

"They go 'Hoo',"

"Yes, I know. You said owls but they go what?"

"I said, they go 'Hoo'!"

"I know that and I'm saying owls go what!?"

"I know that and I'm saying...You know what, never mind."

"Okay? Let's get going now, to The Other Side!" Jesse announced as the regular world around them began shifting to The Other Side. Gavi was giddy as ever, while Jesse wonders what noise owls make.
