I knew I was in love the same day he broke my heart.

It's funny in a way because I didn't think that someone could cause so much havoc in my life in the span of a few days. Yet, the moment he walked away, I felt it.

I felt as if he'd just sliced my chest open, taken my heart out and stomped on it, repeatedly.

I felt like it was hard to breathe and my vision blurred because of the tears in my eyes.

I felt cold and alone.

And I knew it.

I'd fallen in love with Ethan Clarkson.

I also knew that there was no way that we could be together.

The age difference wasn't the problem. No. The problem was my father. And his stupid company. And the fact that Ethan was his newest partner.

My lips trembled as I leaned back and closed my eyes.

Fuck.

Life was too complicated already, and I just made it harder.

Ashley is hoping to get a break from the city chaos in the winter holidays. Excerpt:

This was such a bad idea.

I bit my lip as I stared out the car's window. Tall peaks heavy with snow surrounded us. Large pine trees, all covered in white, flanked a lonely cabin in the distance. A large pile of wood covered the porch, and smoke billowed out of the chimney.

It didn't seem like such an awful idea last week when I told my father that I wasn't going to skip the vacation—my winter vacation. We rented this gorgeous cabin right in Aspen only once a year. He stared at me impassibly, much like he always did, and told me I'd have to arrange everything myself. Which was fine by me. I just wanted to get out of the house at any cost. I needed to. Plus—the scenery was worth it. Even if I was going to be spending winter break with a bunch of strangers.

            The driver cleared his throat from the front seat. I'd arrived. I couldn't back down now. "Thank you," I said. The old man bobbed his head before stepping out of the car.

The fresh pine scent hit me as soon as he opened the door, warming my heart. It smelled like home. It felt weird to call it like that, but it was my favorite place ever. It reminded me of the few moments we'd spent as an actual family.

The wind whistled and rustled the leaves. A shiver ran down my spine as I hugged myself. I hoped my father fixed things soon with my mother. She had a meltdown at least twice a year where she decided she wanted a divorce, and he would convince her otherwise by showering her in presents. I rolled my eyes.

I didn't mind coming here alone. I wished I could have the cabin to myself, but I didn't stop to consider that my father might turn our vacation into a business trip. Right before I left home, he informed me that he'd invited his new business partner and his family too. I'd never met the guy, but they had planned to bring their families together to bond throughout the holidays.

I almost snorted at that. Nice going, Dad.

Now I was stranded with this Ethan guy and his family.
