6. Stylinonem104
We are super excited to introduce our next author Stylinonem104 whose book Again has been published and is now available to buy on Amazon! She has 8 published works on wattpad, the books in the Again series now collectively boasting an impressive 12M reads. She's not afraid to tackle some raw issues in her stories, so we asked her to take a few minutes to tell us a little bit more about what goes on in the creative mind of Robyn Christina...
Whereabouts are you from and what do you do for a living?
I'm from New Haven Connecticut, and I'm a freelance writer and graphic designer right now. I've had A LOT of other jobs before though lol.
What made you join wattpad, and what do you like most about it?
I joined wattpad because I'd been writing a story for a while about the Marvel universe on http://fanfiction.net and I wanted to get into writing again. I don't remember exactly how I stumbled across wattpad, but I know I loved it because of the fact that you could actually interact with readers and other writers, and the layout and look of it. Orange is one of my favorite colors lol.
The majority of your books are Harry fics - what is it about him that inspires you to write? Would you consider writing about anyone else/any other fandom?
I find Harry inspiring to write because I have a massive crush on him and think about him all the time and imagine crazy scenarios for him, so I figured why not channel that into something creative and fun and maybe entertaining. I think he's gorgeous and so magnetic and I can't help but be inspired by the way he is. I just love him I guess XD
I would definitely consider writing about others, and I have written about others. I wrote a story a really long time ago about Marvel characters and I want to get back to that, and I also love Zayn and Liam so they usually play big roles in my stories. I take a lot of liberties with them all though so I usually write AUs.
Congratulations on your book Again being published! That is an amazing achievement! How did you feel when you first found out?
When I first found out Again was going to be published I was absolutely ecstatic. I could not believe it and I still can't imagine that it's good enough. I'm so insecure about it, but I know how huge an accomplishment it is to get published and I see how excited people are to be able to buy the book so I can't help but be super proud and really really grateful.
How did you first come up with the idea for Again? And at what point during the writing process did you decide there would be a sequel (that would eventually turn into a 4-book series!) ?
I came up with the idea for Again after seeing how other fanfics portrayed Harry, and how they idealized really toxic and manipulative relationships as though that's what love is about. I wanted to write something that did away with all of that nonsense and showed that real love isn't easy or perfect but it doesn't have to be traumatic either.
I knew there would be sequels by the time I'd written the first ten chapters of Again. It just was necessary lol. The story just keeps going on and on in my mind, and things from the first book have to be resolved. It's just an amazing story really and I can't believe I'm the one who thought it up. It's crazy.
You deal with some pretty serious issues in Again, including prostitution and rape. Were you nervous about your readers' reactions to these topics, and were their reactions what you expected?
I was never nervous about the themes brought up in Again because I've seen the depths of controversy and oddness that this fandom can go to, so I knew they could handle it. I was not expecting the levels of immaturity some of it has been met with. That's annoying but I've learned to ignore it. What's even more unexpected is the amount of people who relate to Cecilia's story and who've found strength and hope in it. That's wonderful and I think it's a huge part of why I keep the story going even when I want to quit.
The latest book in the series, Infinity, is still in progress. When do you anticipate finishing this book, and will there be another installment in the series after Infinity is completed?
I want Infinity to be done by the end of May at the latest, and then there is another installment, the second part of Infinity, and then I think that's going to be the last one. I hope so. ;)
Your book H tackles a very controversial subject, drug addiction. There can often be upheaval among readers when Harry's character is in pain, or exhibits less than desirable traits. What was your thinking process when placing his character in these heartbreaking scenarios?
H started out as a joke between me and my friends from wattpad and once I started writing it, it took on a life of its own. I knew once the plot started coming to me that the subject would get really dark but I wasn't worried, I knew people would either understand and learn the lessons in the situations or they'd make a childish comment and stop reading. As a writer I don't think you can let fear of what the readers will think stop you from writing something. You have to be true to your story.
Which of your characters (across all of your works) do you enjoy writing most, and why?
I love writing Zayn in H the most. Everything from his personality to the way he thinks to the way he talks is just so cool to me. I love thinking about him and I have too much fun coming up with his slang lol.
Which character has been the most challenging to write? With hindsight, would you have done anything differently with them? Why?
The most challenging character I have written is probably actually two: Robyn and Harry in H. Robyn is based on me so I have to write about myself which is ridiculously difficult since I am not an open book at all, I'm really guarded so it's a challenge to keep that character truthful. And then Harry is difficult to write because I need to keep him honest too without ever glorifying what he does or demonizing him either. It's a lot for a fanfic but I love it. I wouldn't do anything differently with either one of them.
You're also writing an entirely different type of story called Points West. What sparked this decision to move away from fanfiction and try something new? How does writing in this genre differ from your previous experience writing Harry fanfics?
Points West is my attempt at writing a real novel. It's a story I've been thinking of for years, inspired by an assignment I had in English class that I just couldn't stop thinking about. I wanted to try it because I want to know if I'm actually any good at writing or if I'm just a hack lol. It gives me a lot more freedom I think than writing a Harry fic, I don't have to consider the fandom or feel like I'm competing with anyone else or worry that I'll be compared to anything else. It's lovely.
Why did you choose this particular setting for Points West? What inspired the historical theme, and how much research did you have to do to keep the feel of the story authentic?
Points West requires a ton of research to make sure everything I'm saying and doing is historically accurate. It's exhausting but really informative and wonderful for a history nerd like me. I chose the setting because I feel like it's a story about the time that's never been told or told from this perspective so I think it's important. And a lot of the problems of then echo what's happening now, so there are a lot of people who'll be able to relate to it.
As a reader, do you prefer reading real-life Harry or AU Harry? Why?
I like both but AU Harry stories are so imaginative and creative, they're usually a lot more interesting and fun to read in my opinion.
Who are some of your fav writers on Wattpad? How about published authors?
I love aquarliam, and fanficteller is an amazing writer as well. styles_orama is incredibly talented, and there are many others but I can't name them all right now.
My favorite published authors are F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sylvia Plath, Zora Neale Hurston, Maya Angelou and Edgar Allan Poe.
And finally...
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time when you're not on wattpad?
When I'm not on wattpad I'm writing, designing graphics and clothes, and cooking. I'm a crafty person too so I've always got some project going on. And I've just entered the world of furniture flipping so I am all about that right now :)
Make sure you check out Again on Amazon, and give our fellow wattpadder the support she absolutely deserves!
More interviews with our fav writers coming soon...
