Editor's Letter

Hello everyone and welcome to the ninth issue of La La Land!

Wait a second... I think I read that wrong.

Okay, okay, I'm done. But seriously, for anyone who watched the Oscars this week, how awkward was THAT? I don't think I've ever experienced such an intense range of emotions in the short span of thirty seconds. But that being said, I'm SUPER HAPPY that Moonlight won. Anyone who has seen the movie will know it was totally deserving - even just the script itself was a masterpiece.

Regardless of its bumps, the Oscars were great as always and maintained the magic of its fairytale evening. Using that as my tacky segway, this issue of Wattmag is focusing especially on fairytales! We're talking Disney, fairytale adaptations, and much more in celebration of the release of Beauty and the Beast. Anyone pumped for that movie? I know I am!

We've got awesome content as usual - including an article from ShaunAllan where he talks about fairytale retellings. He's got some great stuff to say about it all and I'd definitely be taking it all on board! He's written quite a few awesome retellings himself. Another great article comes from DVBeltran where he discusses how to become immortal through your writing.

If you're thinking "What the heck are retellings?" or "Are they even that popular, anyway?" you might be totally blanking. Yes, retellings are very well known and popular - and it's quite likely you've come across quite a few yourself. If you've seen the play Wicked, you've watched a retelling of the Wizard of Oz (or if you've read Danielle Page's Dorothy Must Die series). If you've seen Maleficent, you've watched a retelling of Sleeping Beauty. Even 10 Things I Hate About You was a Shakespeare retelling! They're all around us, guys!

I think it's really cool when somebody can take an idea already formed and turn it completely into something else. It's almost like fanfiction, in a way. It just goes to show the diversity of all of our minds and how we can each contribute our own individual ideas to create something really unique. Have any of you even tried doing a retelling before? The thought had honestly never even crossed my mind until I read this issue - now I'm feeling kind of inspired!

I hope this issue can inspire you also and give you awesome advice to help you with your writing journeys. Please enjoy this issue and leave as much feedback as you can. Until then, I'll see you in next month's issue of La La Land.

Okay, I'm sorry. Now I'm done.
