Ask Yash

Dear Yash, how do I make two characters stand out from each other? How do I give each character their own defining qualities ?

Firstly, you need to know what image you want each character to project. Remember: their characteristics play a huge role in the mood of your story.

Once you know your basic plot and you know what role character plays, write down a few things that will impact their characteristics. Maybe they're really funny - or get angry easily. Maybe they're shy - or really out there and loud.

Remember, each of your characters are their own person, each one needs to have a unique personality. The last thing you want is for them to be so similar that if they switched place, no one would be able to tell the difference.

Figure out what their past is. Understanding each character's backstory will allow your readers to understand them and have a better personal connection with each character. It gives them more depth and helps them become less two dimensional.

Dear Yash, do you have any tips for getting more involved in the wattpad community ?

Personally, I love the wattpad community. It's like one big family!

You need to put yourself out there. Commenting on books that you love will allow you to meet readers who have the same/similar taste in books -so you will have something to talk about! It might even get you in contact with the author's themselves. Interaction is definitely key here.

Try following people who show up in your discover tab. First, read their bios to see if you have anything in common and maybe once you follow them you can chat!

Having a private chat is really easy on wattpad and it's an amazing way to make friends.

You still have to be careful. Don't give your personal information out. Don't continue speaking to someone who seems dodgy, instead report them immediately. Also report cyberbullying or any form of hate or harassment. The Wattpad staff are very good at shutting down harmful accounts. I understand you want to get more involved in the community, but don't make yourself vulnerable! Be smart. Go through your potential friend's bio and talk to them about general things at first i.e. Your favorite books.

The forums on this site are also an amazing way to get involved. You can join big group conversations and talk about all sorts of things! The cafe is the best place to meet people and discuss any kind of topic you like. Otherwise you can always discuss stories in the specific genre threads and share advice with people about writing.

Dear Yash, how do I deal with hate comments on stories?

Report it. Delete it. Ignore it.

There will always be haters. There is no way in which we can stop every hate comment or post that we receive - but don't let it get to you. It's the love that matters. Don't worry yourself with all the hate and negativity.

If it's in somebody else's story, report it and let the amazing people at Wattpad do their job.

If it's your story, you can delete it. The better you are, the more hate you'll receive - but what counts is the fact that you'll get double the amount of love.

Everybody has haters. You have to do what makes you happy and not worry about other's opinions. If someone's opinion really matters, it won't feel like hate, it will feel like constructive criticism. But there is a clear difference between the two. Sometimes, readers like to comment on stories to correct any errors they see or question an element of the story because they genuinely care. There's a fine line between doing that or just commenting to diss a story and complain about how 'bad' it is.

How do I create an environment that I actually want to write in? I live with my big family who are constantly making noise and I never get alone time in which I can write.

The best advice I could every give you is to schedule your time and make sure that your entire family knows that a certain time is quiet time for you.

Pick a place that's not completely accessible for you family. For example, your room or maybe a study.

Music is an amazing way of getting into a good space in your mind. It can shut all the stuff happening around you out and help you focus on what's in front of you. I suggest listening to classical music or music that's not going to distract you but rather, motivate you. Loud music can really put some people off but if it works for you then go for it!

Before you start writing you current chapter/s,go through your previous work. Look through articles or pictures that have inspired you before. It'll encourage you to get work done.

If there are some days where you feel extra motivated, then write extra so you'll be able take time off over the next few days if you're finding it hard to get some more alone time to write.

Don't forget to spend time with your family because balance is key.

Dear Yash, I've been working on a book for about four months but I feel so detached to it. How do I add a personal touch to my books and still make it relevant for everyone else?

Think about each of your characters and their personalities. What made them portray certain characteristics? For example, if they're continuously angry or a bully, maybe they are being abused at home or hiding a big secret.

Create some suspense for your readers, you will not only feel closer to your characters but it makes for an exciting storyline.

Adding in problems or dilemmas that you have experienced or that are similar to what you experience helps too. It creates an emotional connection - and it can even help you cope with something going on in your life as it turns it into a creative outlet. It makes your characters relatable and human. We all go through things in life that make it hard - and sometimes we need the reminder that others do too.

You can always express your current feelings through your characters. It's a great way to cope with your feelings and makes for a stronger plot.
