SHORT STORY: Sweet Dream Or Beautiful Nightmare: Golems and Dragons
To think, waking up to a forest in bed was supposed to be a good thing: fresh air and green trees. It's supposed to be calming - and perhaps it actually would have been...if I'd planned on being there in the first place.
The chilled wind blowing makes my arm hair stand, creating goosebumps. Lifting upright from my mattress, I take in the scenery around me. Mossy bushes, dead leaves, purple and yellow flowers everywhere.
I must have transported in my sleep again.
I haven't gotten the hang of this 'instant transmission' thing since training. Last time this happened, I arrived in Hong Kong. I woke up inside a family's home because of a dream I had about meeting an online friend who lived there. The family yelled at me in Chinese but the only word I could distinguish was 'thief' before they started throwing things at me. The hardest part about transporting is concentrating on a destination.
Pulling the blanket off me, I stand up and feel the muddy grass squished between my toes.
At least I have pants on this time.
I take slow steps, the twigs snapping underneath my feet. I raise my legs higher when I see a sharp rock in the path.
The clouds above me start to change from gray to brown.
"Where am I?" I question, eyeing my surroundings with caution as I continue to walk.
The sudden appearance of a tall creature running toward me startles me and I drop to the ground in shock.
"Don't dawdle Judith! You're late, come on!" it screams in a deep guttural tone. Grabbing my hand, it pulls me to my feet and drags me with it as we run through the woods. The texture of its skin is sticky and slimy. It feels like the mud between my toes.
He must be a golem. My Dad has spoken to me before about them. He told me I was likely to meet one of them one day and to always caution myself. The creatures could either be good or bad. It all depended on their creators.
"Where are we going?!" I ask out of breath. I'm still confused as to how he knows my name.
"No questions! Just run!" he replies as our speed picks up. I want to stop, but he pushes on further.
The trees change from green to red as we run. The humidity in the air becomes stuffy. There is ash and smoke surrounding us. A boisterous roar from above makes me almost halt my movement. The source of the noise coming from a red dragon blowing fire out of his mouth. My heart beats fast as I look at it. The sight of the fire-breathing creature makes my skin crawl.
"This way!" The muddy golem directs, pulling me in the left direction. Our feet speed through the woods as we don't stop running.
The dragon's roars become distant and I have no idea how long we've been running until we reach an overhead cave. It's big enough to fit both of us so we enter quickly, the door closing behind us. Before moving any further I hunch over, placing my palms on my knees. I take in a huge breath as I try to recover from all the running.
"I apologize but we're on a time limit. We must go." The creature states as he grabs my arm again. This time, I don't let me drag me away. I jerk my arm away from his grip.
"Go where? What is this place?" I cry out in confusion. The inside of the cave catches my attention. I am shocked the modern interior of the cave. Leather couches, armchairs, wood tables, and glass skylight. Surprisingly decorative. What kind of cave looks like this?
The creature looks down at me and I hear his deep voice bellow. "My name is Makkoo. This is the Golden land, master has been expecting you."
I peer at him cautiously, not knowing if I can trust him yet. "And your master is?"
"Come," He nods his head toward the clean living room.
I note his avoidance of my question. Hesitantly, I begin to follow him. For some reason, I felt like I can trust Makkoo - but I knew I still had to be cautious.
As we make our way through the living room, we enter a long blank hallway. There are golems just like him in different sizes walking by us, waving and nodding in salutations. I give out a forceful smile, waving back. I am still filled with caution and am anxious to know what is going on.
We reach a big black door and Makkoo turns the knob. As I peer into the room, another immaculate interior blinds me. Everything is white: the walls, beds, blanket, television, carpet.
Who is this person? What is all this?
"Master," Makkoo bows to the white chair. The chair turns swiftly and reveals a human. A woman.
"Judith. I'm glad to finally meet you." She greets me. Her white teeth gleam from her pink lips. Flawless dark skin with white hair matches her ensemble.
"Okay, I don't mean to be rude but I've never seen or heard of this place before. I don't even know you for that matter." I say with a short bow in her direction - a half attempt to show my respect.
"Yes, but I know you." The woman responds. "I've been watching you since you were a pod. Your parents never spoke of me?" She tilted her head with wonder. I shook my head. Mom and Dad never mentioned or told me anything about this place.
"Of course, your parents weren't really fond of me," the woman continues, standing from her chair. She steps forward and the train of her gown drags on the clean floor behind her.
"I'm sorry, but who are you?" I ask.
"My name is Jacqueline. I'm your godmother," she says simply, offering me a light smile.
After a moment of silence, I let out a laugh. I begin giggling uncontrollably and I try to hold it in with my hand.
I know exactly what this is.
"Okay, I get it," I tell her between giggles. "This is a virtual realm. My parents are testing me again. And you're my godmother? Okay," I look at her with sarcasm, wiping the tears from my eyes. I remember my parents warning me that tests can come anytime in order to show my progress of my powers. I look up and a blank expression on her face makes my smile wilt.
"This is a serious matter," she tells me. "As I said, I've been expecting you for a while. I'm sure you're well aware that for many years the Golems and Dragons have been in a war for land and water."
She pauses for a moment and I purse my lips together, looking at her in silence.
"Negotiating with Dragons is never an easy task," she continues, taking a few more steps toward me. "They can become very stubborn and territorial. Which is why we need help, I've tried explaining to your parents that with your powers we can banish the Dragons to a peaceful land and the Golems can roam around without being burnt into a puddle. They refused, hence why I had to take drastic measures to summon you here."
I still say nothing, staring at her in disbelief.
"I know this is a lot to take in but situations are dire. We need your help, Judith."
She finishes her stern speech, her eyes never leaving me the entire time. I narrow my own at her and then look around the quiet room. The only sound I hear is of television static. My mouth opens and closes like a fish, speechless. I feel faint. My head is woozy and darkness consumes me as I drop to the floor.
I've been binge watching Supernatural all summer and I can finally say I am addicted! 'son of a b*tch' is my curse again lol Sam and Dean are fricking gorgeous!! Season 12 this month!!
I never explored Golems and Dragons before, glad I did so I can learn more of these great creatures. I might expand it more, hence the cliffhanger. A mixture of Alice in Wonderland and a little Dragon Ball Z. Anyway, I hoped you liked this short fantasy story.
