FEATURE ARTICLE: Fantasy Fanatics
Out of all of the different genres of storytelling, fantasy is one of the most intriguing ones. Rather than having a base to start, with fantasy, authors can literally completely create their own worlds where things that we could never imagine happening do happen. It surpasses science and known facts about our world, with creatures such as dragons and fairies using supernatural abilities and magic. Imagination can be set free to do whatever it likes, even defying everything we believe as humans to be possible. Fantasy is a genre where the impossible is possible and where entire worlds can be created out of absolutely nothing.
You've probably already heard of so many great fantasy stories, such as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. These are just two of the more popular pieces in the fantasy genre, yet if you look, you can find so many more. Fantasy isn't just a genre for a specific type of people. It's pure imagination and tends to open people's eyes to new worlds and ways of thinking. For example, in Game of Thrones, there are dragons and magic, which are two things you wouldn't see in daily life. The fact that a story can pull you into a whole different world where things don't work the same way is amazing. If you don't already read fantasy, I suggest you try it, because it's likely you will find yourself falling in love with its worlds. Personally, I usually read and write science fiction, but the first fantasy book I read, I loved. After that, I couldn't help but read more. Even if you're mainly into one genre, it wouldn't hurt to give fantasy a try, too.
Fantasy can also be amazing to write. As I already mentioned, fantasy is whatever an author wants it to be. It's unique in that it can defy the laws of nature and allow whatever you want to happen, to happen. It contains beautiful creatures and towering kingdoms. It has protagonists with unnaturally colored hair and unique abilities. Unlike sci-fi (although it pains me to say anything remotely negative about sci-fi), you don't need to follow rules or have some well thought out reason for any magic or unrealistic things that are in your story. Writing fantasy is beautiful because you're free to let your imagination loose.
So I dare you to try fantasy, if you haven't already. If you need help figuring out how to even start, try looking for inspiration in daily life. Go for a walk, or if you'd rather stay inside, look up pictures on Google. Often times, I'll find myself coming up with story ideas from just seeing something that sparks something inside of me. The world is a beautiful place, and has enough inspiration for everyone. If you're a reader, and don't tend to write a lot, you can always go to your nearest library and ask about good fantasy books. Or if you're a reader, it's never too late to try writing. Fantasy could be a really great genre to begin a writing career in since you can make your own rules. It's your world, crafted solely by yourself, making it easier for you to enjoy it and be able to be as creative as you'd like. Plus, as a writer, you'll only have to suffer through countless hours of writers' block and using Youtube as a procrastination device as you try convincing yourself that you need to continue your story. I'm kidding about that. Kind of.
But really, writing is fun. Otherwise, I wouldn't be writing this right now.
Go ahead and try fantasy, whether you're reading or writing. And at least if you do try it, you can be like Daniel Radcliffe.
