Our Favorite Villains: The Wattrolls

Last month I began to write a new story encouraged by Wattpad's #JustWriteIt 30 Day Challenge LGBT edition. From the start, I knew my topic would be different from the stories I had read on Wattpad, and was extremely nervous if my idea would be welcome or even draw an audience. To my surprise, I have received over 1K reads and over 100 votes on this story. Even though these numbers may be insignificant for some Wattpaders, but since I'm a relatively new user (2months) these felt like a huge accomplishment.

Alongside that newly discovered audience I came across some unpleasant characters: WATTROLLS (Wattpad Trolls) as I like to call them. Although they also go by other names like.... Internet Trolls, Vibe Killers, Grammar Police, and the most infamous titles of all "Grammar Nazi's". I'm sure by now you know whom I speak of, and let's face it we all have one inside of us...even if we don't wish to admit it. It's the secret villain that lives inside of us!

Let's admit it, our inner Wattroll yearns to bring out a red pen and highlight-attack a story, article, or post filled with grammatical errors. It's all fun and games when we do it, although not so fun when we are the ones getting chewed out. Not only will these Wattrolls spellcheck the oblivion out of your work, they will publicly destroy your personal integrity as a writer with no mercy what so over.

As you continue to write you will bump into a few of these type of Wattrolls, and you can do two things to deal with this annoying problem.... block them or actually pay attention to what they say.

Survival Guide to Wattrolls

You might be thinking right now why would I listen to a Wattroll? Well, you might be able to discover a few things about your writing and your Wattroll by reading those pesky comments.

1. Wattrolls are bad writers

These guys are honestly bad writers! They spend so much time going over every single sentence that they never actually complete anything. When they bump across another wattpader who is having some moderate reader traffic they will inject their venom upon seeing any errors.

Not only will they inject their business thesis statement into your writing, imploring that you become a boring writer...like them, they will troll you until you do otherwise. Get this buzz killer off your back by reminding him that good writer knows the rules, and an exceptional writer knows how to purposely bend the rules for emphasis!

2. Wattrolls have bad attitudes

Stay calm and know that these people have bad attitudes, ignore the bigotry and pay attention to any claims with some substance. Like did you really write their instead of they're. No one can say that is a bad comment, it's offering constructive criticism which can help you improve your writing in the long run.

On the other hand, when they begin to mock and laugh – taking your mistakes out of proportion slashing your creativity away make sure to take a deep breath, and know that this lone-angry-wolf 1.) will never grow as a writer 2.) will remain a Wattpad loner who no one wants to befriend (and we all know the importance of building a community on Wattpad!) 3.) they're probably just jealous of your work.

3. Wattrolls waste time

Did I mention that they are bad writers? The time these Wattroll spend policing every line of your book is time, they could spend...well, I don't know: WRITING?!

Honestly, when was the last time you saw, say, a featured Wattpad writer sending an email or chewing away someone for a typo? Well, they don't, because they are too busy writing!

4. Wattrolls are not perfect

It will not matter how perfect the sentence structure your Wattroll gives you once he is done chewing you out. If he starts critiquing you, misspelling...do I need to say more?

I say this because this happened to me, when a certain Wattpader was not only critiquing my ideas but also my writing, that comment was over seven lines long and with no punctuation what so over! I ran out of breath just trying to read that comment, there were no pauses whatsoever. At that point, I knew any comments from this person were irrelevant.

Keep on writing!

Whether you want them or not Wattrolls will make their presence known through your feed. Sometimes, they will give you some real advice, like a plot loop you weren't aware of, or how you keep writing in the wrong tense. Yet, other times they will just exercise their Doctorate Degrees in Trolling, and when they do remember to take in the constructive criticism and brush off the negativity, after all, you could either spent your time crying over a comment without backbone or you can stop wasting your time and get back to what you love doing: writing.

Just to drive people a little mad, there were some intentional errors made in this article. Can you catch all the errors? Take that grammar police!
