All good things must come to an end . . . right? Maybe not!
"All good things must come to an end..."
That's how the saying goes, right? That all good, awesome and extremely beautiful things must come to an end. That we must say goodbye after we've come to love something or someone, or a few someones. That we must no longer wait for that special day in the week when we sit back and get our 30 min or an hour or even 4 min dose of heaven. Yes, all good things must come to an end.
These things I refer to are clearly the things that take up a shit ton of time in our lives. Whether we're watching online on some illegal shady website. Or we've bought a crap ton of subscriptions because we're desperate to watch anywhere at any time. The fact is we love these things but yes, they do come to an end.
So, I don't know if you've figured it out yet, but that's what we're exploring in this article. I'm talking Tv shows, anime and manga series, webtoon series, and even stuff that you probably never heard of – brace yourself!
First on the list in all its Vampire glory, we have The Vampire Diaries.
Starting in the fall of 2009, we've been graced for the past 7 ½ years with love, war, betrayal, witchcraft, and overall awesomeness. Unfortunately, we said goodbye when this good thing came to end on March 10th in one of the most beautifully done series finales I have ever seen.
You read it correctly. The Vampire Diaries is over. Now, just to clarify, I came late to the scene only starting the show when it was wrapping up its 5th season. I'd heard the name many times before and blew it off, constantly regarding it as 'bullshit' because it didn't resemble Dracula. However, when The Originals premiered I was all over the show only coming to the realization later on that it was a spinoff of the thing that I loathed. Thankfully, I pushed my foolish pride aside and turned on Netflix to find out what the hell the deal with this Katherine character was, and to find out how many more hot vampires there were. *ahem* Ian Somerhalder *ahem*
Safe to say, I was pleasantly surprised and quickly fell in love with the show. For the past 3 years I have waited, cried, laughed, drooled, obsessed, and gasped uncontrollably at the things that the writers have put together. Even the killing of Katherine Pierce AKA Katerina Petrova brought a tear to my eye. Finding out that Damon was a test subject for 5 years and all those experiments with Whitmore vamps. Then there was the overwhelming love story that was Alaric and Jo (seriously Kai was a dick!). The death of the Sheriff which I think really made me appreciate my mom even more than I already did. And did I mention the killing of the other Stefan doppelganger just for him to live?
There was a lot, too much to mention really, that gave us all (well the viewers) something to look forward to every October because even if the previous season had a happy ending, we knew that the writers would screw us over and we couldn't wait.
{But come on, we all know that if Nina hadn't left the show we'd be heading to a season 9 but whatever C'est la vie!}
So now that the emotional roller coaster that was The Vampire Diaries is over, I feel a hole in my heart ---- Not really, more like a dull ache that ended once I started re-watching the series {T-T}. It was a good thing, in fact, an amazing thing that brought us great joy and is now over. Due to me not being evil, I refuse to put spoilers and ruin it for those late watchers who have yet to view the series finale. However, I will say, it is actually already available on Netflix... so what ya waiting for?
On to the next one. If any of you reading this know me on a semi-personal level, you'll know that I am an avid anime watcher/manga reader/Japan enthusiast/K-drama lover etc, etc, etc. My point is that this year I've said goodbye to a few great series that have been giving me something to look forward to.
The famous Naruto series finally concluded the anime adaptation on March 23rd, while the Manga series of the same name concluded over two years ago in December 2014. For those not familiar with the series I'll give you a brief run down. It's about ninja... only not the way we see ninja on TV with their black clothing and disappearing acts. In fact, Kishimoto really gave us something worth getting into, and as a gateway... to start anyone watching anime, I always start them off on Naruto.
I refuse to give anything away – it's just really awesome and if you have some downtime – and by downtime I mean you broke your leg and have about 3 months of nothing to do, then I recommend Naruto. It's also a great show for kids (these are jokes—when I started my sisters on it, they ran around the house screaming Rasengan for a week) but it is extremely entertaining and will have you just as emotional as if you were watching one of those CW TV shows.
Next up is the Webtoon series UnTouchable. Here's where it gets conflicting for me. First, a Webtoon is basically Korean Manga or Manhwa. The factors making Manga and Manhwa different are the fact that they are in color, you slide up to read and not across, and also, you read left to right like in the western world. (Moving on)
A few weeks ago, I was watching my favorite Youtuber (a halfer by the name of Joey) The an1me man. (You guys should check him out) And as youtube does, I had to constantly watch these ads before I could watch the video I wanted to, of course after seeing the ad for maybe the 30th time, I caved.
So, I went to google play and downloaded the line Webtoon app, created an account using facebook, and found UnTouchable. Here's the quick synopsis; Vampires no longer have to bite humans and feed on their blood. Instead, they feed on physical energy by touching you. So, we have a vampire and a person with Misophobia who probably hasn't touched another human being in 10 years . . . So, then the two bump into each other and that's where our story begins.
I've spent hours upon hours reading this amazingly captivating story, which not only made me cry, laugh, and swoon, but made me wonder if the next person who tells me I had nice hands is actually a vampire feeding on my energy. Safe to say that just like everything else, I became fully engrossed with the storyline and its characters. However, like the title says, all good things must come to an end. Last Monday, readers of the popular Webtoon were given an episode entitled; Last episode, and after scrolling to the end, were given a very abrupt: Epilogue will be posted next week.
Don't feel discouraged though, the series is quite entertaining and very much worth the read so if you need something to kill time give it a go.
Something else that I'm sure that we all have been griping about is the upcoming second half of the final season of Teen Wolf. Truth be told, I only became a fan of the show in its third season simply because I felt like they were just remaking Big wolf on Campus which was a popular ABC Family show in the 1990's. *Drool* Tommy Dawkins *Drool*
Through much skin pinching and internet surfing though, I finally checked it out and I wasn't disappointed until we got to this point. Their entire reason for ending the show is that the heroes are going off the college blah blah blah. ~Insert long exaggerated sigh~ Come on guys, you're killing me.
In my opinion, they're ending the show because they ran out of ideas, which is plausible. I mean you can only have the heroes survive obvious death so many times without it being complete crap. Take for instance the aforementioned Vampire Diaries. They killed off our stars a bunch of times... but where there is Magic, there is survival.
In Teen wolf, we don't get a whole lot of Magic and thanks to that, our heroes are seen constantly doing their (my opinion) comical street fighting. You can tell that the fights are choreographed. You can see that the other guy didn't really get hit. You can even tell how fake the blood is and yet, for years we tuned in to MTV to watch it. Now we must say goodbye.
Many may feel that the show has lost its spark coming down to its final stages and I agree, but we can't say that we weren't given something great over the past few years. As await the final half of the series finale, I'd say we should take a trip down memory lane by re-watching the series in its entirety.
Now, not all things got the proper sendoff that we should hope for, and so, we take a look at the shows that shouldn't have ended in the way that they did.
Looking back to the early 2000's we have Flash forward. I don't know how many of you have seen it, but it was truly an amazing show that premiered on ABC. However, due to ratings being low, it was never renewed for a second season.
Alpha's—Brilliant! Unfortunately, once again due to ratings, this scifi thriller left us on the edge of our seats wondering what happened to Gary in Time square. It has been one of the most upsetting shows to never get another season, so much so, that the writers of The Big Bang theory included the frustration in one of their episodes. We're given an angry Sheldon who sends a letter to the creators of the show (Alpha's) demanding to be told what happens in the season three that never made it to air. Sadly, we aren't even given a piece of the puzzle, and this clear plea to have the show renewed went unanswered.
And does anyone remember that spectacular show Freaks and Geeks. A teen drama starring some amazing Hollywood names today, it's actually been said that this is where some of them got their start. I don't even want to spoil it so I'll just say to turn on Netflix and start watching. The only disappointing thing about this one season brainchild, is that it is one season. It doesn't end abrupt and it doesn't feel lackluster, but it would've been nice if we had at least gotten a movie to wrap things up more.
Speaking of Teen dramas- how about Faking it. The show aired on MTV in 2014 and, in my opinion, became a hit. With its modern day themes and its obvious finger pointing to the nerds of the past are now the cool kids, I found it hard not to fall in love with it. Unfortunately, due to rating drops and basically shitty timing, the writers were forced to write the ending faster than they wanted to end the series at an extremely cringey place.
While the ending itself wasn't as bad as I make it out to be, we were given a bit of closure as the creator let the viewers know what the intended ending was. I'm not too mad about this show that centered around girls who tried to be popular but didn't achieve it until they were mistaken as lesbians. (YES- IT HAPPENED.) But I did want more of Karma and Amy.
Now for all of you witch lovers, The Witches of Eastwick will not be returning. After waiting a full year to see the third season and find out what happens to our Immortal family of witches, I found out that the show was not renewed and therefore will not be returning. However, it is still a great series to watch if you want some magic, family drama, and hot guys in your life.
Okay, so, for those of you who do adore anime, we will always remember High school of the Dead, High school DXD, Haganai, Fruits Basket and Ouran High school Host club, Angel Beats (Because everyone wanted to know what happened with Kanade and Otonashi), Say I love you, Sankarea, Toradora, Kamisama Hajimemashita (yes, we did get a 4 episode round up but we wanted more). And my all-time butt hurt moment of canceled anime School rumble.
How about those Korean Dramas like Boys over Flowers, She was Pretty, K- pop extreme survival (whose ending was so abrupt that I almost broke my TV), Good Morning Call which may have been wrapped up but we all wanna know what happened between Nao and Hisashi. Then there's the amazing Itazura na kiss which has been adapted about 10 different times and yet I still feel empty and lost at the end of watching it – no matter which language it's in. (Other names Mischievous kiss, playful kiss, miss in kiss etc)
Okay—I may have gone overboard again – you guys know how it feels, and if you don't then you should watch these series and feel the same way with me.
So, now that I've finished ranting about the stuff that I love that has gone bye bye, I'll tell you this – keep your head up because not everything is over and you can look out for some series that were fortunate enough to get renewed, revived, or remade.
Thank you all for reading, and for recommendations on awesome TV shows and foreign dramas (English or other) then you know how to find me.
